NOMAD could dip in and out of Earth's atmosphere because it was designed for ultra-low orbital passes. That's why it was shaped like a gigantic wing. The station's aerodynamics generated lift and reduced drag so it could safely dive into the atmosphere, strafe targets on the ground, return to LEO, and burn to stabilize its parking orbit. It likely did this minimize the time it took a missile to hit its target so the enemy couldn't get away. That's also why most missile strikes throughout the movie took 3-5 seconds from launch to hit, while the big launch near the end took several minutes to even get close

But we see no visual pressure from reentry despite the fact that, even if intended as such, NOMAD isn't aerodynamic; greebles and laser.
@iliketrains0pwned
@iliketrains0pwned 8 ай бұрын
@@VesSaphia I mean yeah, it doesn't have the best aerodynamics for flight. But it still would act as a lifting body. And that could be further supported by using engines while it is in atmosphere. Plus, reentry heating effects only happen if NOMAD was hypersonic. If it orbits slowly enough (like LEO with engines to compensate), it also could enter and exit the atmosphere slowly enough to even avoid a supersonic shockwave; let alone hypersonic heating.

@@iliketrains0pwned That's not how orbit works.. You HAVE to go fast. orbiting is just moving fast enough to "fall" past the Earth's curvature. The eatrh is HUGE, so you must travel fast. If it's being held up by engines, then it's not orbiting, it's flying in Atmosphere & Space. There's no changing that fact. Also - this thing "dipping" into Earth's atmosphere at orbital speeds would definitely destroy it, or at least melt it to slag, as the leading surface area if HUGE, so heat generated due to air friction would be compounded and astronomical, without some kind of sci-fi energy shielding technology..

@@iliketrains0pwnedOrbital velocity is about Mach 25. You say that the station could be non hypersonic, so under Mach 5… That’s not orbit, that’s not suborbital, that’s just flying.

Honestly I found the nomad to be hilarious, from its inconsistent altitude, its 1 billon dollar price tag(witch is practically a steal as far as the defense industry goes), to its giant obvious targeting laser and seeming inability communicate with ground forces, the thing got more than a few good laughs out of me. Also can you do the tanks from this movie next, I was hysterical when the rebels got flanked by the "stealthy" apartment complex sized gas guzzler's.

Yeah even for being 2 miles long it shouldn't look that large in the sky especially if it's an "orbital" platform. Though the movie does mention that nomad is a trillion dollars and took a decade to construct after the entirety of Los Angeles was destroyed by a malfunction

Can NOMAD's laser be seen by its enemies or is that just a film making shorthand for the audience to know it is near? Similar to how NOMAD can dive into the atmosphere with no re-entry heating, as a way to wow the audience. The AI never seem to see the beam coming and get into a vehicle to escape?

I'm not sure how it would work in real life, however the movies clearly showed the technical capabilities of the NOMAD so even if the lasers are visible(which I think they were), it is practically impossible to escape on land moving vehicle from the NOMAD sicne the speed difference is massive. I'm pretty sure there were some scenes that AI-Robots were looking at the lasers and were aware of NOMAD presence. They just seem like they didn't had any wish to act eaither because of psychological imprint of asstonishing fear the NOMAD left in their memory(no one escaped it before and that brings death whnever it goes) or they understand that they had no chances of escaping it.

didn't know the targeting laser scans for AI, just thought it was for targeting purposes. as to why it dips into the atmosphere is most likely depends on the type of rocket/missile used. the ICBM's can be fired from outer space but for lower yield ammunition it would likely need to dip into atmosphere for close as it might not have the range to be fired from space.

The whole thing is cool in concept, but depicted horribly. I'm glad that the video pointed out some of the errors. Like if it's in space, why does it appear to be RIGHT there? It's big, but orbit is like a hundred miles. It looks like a giant ship a few km long that's floating maybe 5 or 10 km up. Then the laser? If shown from space, it would cover entire landscapes, not a single field or a single village. Plus that sound. If the NOMAD is in Earth's orbit, in OUTER SPACE, there would be no sound. They depict it inconsistently throughout the film which really annoyed me. I had heard so many good things about the film, but it really wasn't all that innovative. It was nothing new. Just a retelling of the same story we've already heard but with some neat new styles. I want something TRULY new. It seems like this was really close, but the script and general plot were missing something. It really could've been transformative. I want something as new and unique as the Matrix was, but with a more human face on the AI. We've had so many versions of nearly-human AI shown in film. HAL, the programs in the Matrix, WALL-E, short circuit, the synths in Blade runner and Alien films... I was envisioning that interwoven into the Hero's Journey. That's what i thought The Creator would be and it was, but it was still missing something. Idk what.

It's just a movie so I gave it a few passes lol. The laser thing was to scan for AI, I guess to avoid causing human casualties (in theory). But yeah everything you said about it being completely useless I agree with. The main thing about it, out of all the issues that stood out to me, was that blowing up Nomad would somehow end the war. Both the USA and the AI rebel nation agreed that Nomad was the key to either winning or losing the war... Lol. But a couple f16s and aircraft carriers, icbms, or soldier transport planes could have done the same exact thing. Kinda goofy. Felt like the Avatar movie kind of. Overall I enjoyed the movie though, mostly because it was 85% action packed and not filled with a bunch of slow bs. This movie seemed like it had potential but just didn’t deliver. The writing took a distant backseat to the effects, which is never a good sign. That lack of quality in the writing shows up with the way NOMAD was shown in space one second, then jump-cut to low atmosphere the next second. Sci fi is fantasy, but it has to make sense by having reasonable continuity within its own universe. However, this movie was a mess in so many ways.

I see absolutely zero reason why building the NOMAD was necessary. The task of bombardment could easily be accomplished by offshore ships, mainland ICBMs, high-altitude bombers, and much more. Even if an orbital bombardment station was necessary, they could easily just go back to the Rods-from-God ideas that the US already made during the Cold War, or the Moon colonies mentioned. Why can’t we just pull off a Gulf War?

This thing actually annoyed me so much, it’s cool as hell, but the designer doesn’t appear to know he difference between an aircraft and a space station. Throughout the entire film is hardly shown at anywhere near the altitude required for orbit, and even at the end when it’s shown at high altitude there is very clearly non artificial gravity, so at most it’s flying suborbitally. I understand the need for it to appear huge and menacing in the sky but being anything other than a space station is just completely stupid, given it has no visible engines and (I don’t care if you think any long thin ish structure is a wing) clearly can’t generate aerodynamic lift. Brilliant concept, brilliant visuals, horrible execution.

It's looking great in the movie, but that thing is as far from reality as it goes. If it would be in an orbital trajectory, it would move with over 7 km/s, instead of the slow crawl we see in the film. It also makes zero sense apart from rule of cool to lower the orbit for targeting purposes and to shorten the missiles' travel time. In the movie, its height of flying is fairly inconsistent. The size on the screen indicates it being well within the atmosphere and moving comparatively slow. On other scenes, it seems to be in a low earth orbit. The targeting laser is a cool visual effect, but again devoid of any actual purpose. How the hell would a laser detect AI? You can measure range incredibly well with it and you can learn about atmospheric composition. But looking for AI in a 1km broad scan? It doesn't work and even if it would it would be spectacularly inefficient. Also, why the hell would anyone use a laser in the visible spectrum of light? Furthermore, tere is only one Nomad, which due to its size can be easily spotted with small telescopes. And it only scans the area underneath, which is also a waste of capabilities. So there is this one singular big object in the sky and it does a worse job than regular land or sea launched missiles and handfull of spy satellites? The longer I think about it, the less sense it makes. But, admittedly, it does look cool. I would expect this kind of craft more in an Anime made for teenagers.

I'm a huge fan of most things sci-fi, but I have to be honest... this whole concept just had me disconnected from the whole movie, it's such a poorly thought out bit of fiction. Even from a tactical point of view, you can strike things with cruise missiles as old as Tomahawks from many decades ago. Then it's just hovering there SUPER low, low enough that random shoulder mounted missiles could threaten it, compared to something actually in low orbit. Then there's the fact that there's CROPS in it? Come on. It's not like modern aircraft carriers (which are more dangerous than this thing) have actual FIELDS in them... that's so dumb. Are they processing the grain up there? Making artisan bread for the soldiers aboard? You're going to weigh this flying platform down with actual dirt, instead of just having normal food stored on it. Anyway, it's pretty, sure, I give you that.
