The "shaky" instrument is a flexatone...it's much more interesting sounding than you've figured out so far. If you hold it in your hand like you are, and squeeze the bottom of the metal strip with your thumb like a spring, THEN shake it, it makes lots of different pitches. There is an argument for Y as a vowel but it is not typically something you are taught in UK schools but pick up over time - I know I learnt it from US TV shows as a kid. As mentioned before I’d assume broadly speaking that a Y challenge whilst possible would likely fail in UK but again I wouldn’t mind seeing the challenge and ensuing argument, but given the 3 guys are British I’d think countdown rules would be enforced as countdown is a British institution.
