Im in the middle of changing my cv axle, you just saved my ass thank you!

Thanks for the video, made my job a lot easier. Couple of additional tips for guys doing this in the driveway and not on a lift: - Buy the seals you (may) need before you start, they're not expensive. If your 4runner is your daily, finding out they're blown after removing the axles could slow you down. Save the new seals if your existing ones are good. It's not like you'll find them cheaper the next time you have the axles out. - Remove the skidplate. It's just 4 12mm bolts and 5 mins tops but the extra angle you gain while hitting the chisel helps. - If you're having a hard time getting the old axle out of the diff with a hammer and chisel, grab a pry bar and put some leverage against the opposite side of the axle from the flat you're hitting. if it's still stubborn grab 2 pry bars and work them at the same time. - Position the clip on the inner axle splines so the open end faces down. The TSRM says to do this to make it easier to seat, and even then it was difficult for me to get it in.

Great video, thanks for doing it. I just got my teenaged son a 2006 with 188,000. When inspecting to consider buying I noted torn outer driver boot. Since i don't know how long it's been torn, I think I will just go ahead and replace the axles on both sides like this. It's ALWAYS advised to replace the axle seals and the axle nut when replacing the CV axle. I did the axles on my Ford Ranger, and the seals looked fine, so I put them back together..... and they leaked afterwards. Had to rip it all apart the next day.
@NoNonsenseKnowHow3 жыл бұрын
It's possible you may have nicked the seal When removing or installing the axle. I've put hundreds of them in without replacing the seals and have never had one leak. Certainly not a bad idea to replace the seals However don't go after market. Make sure to go OEM.

Yeah the grease trick really works good and keeps that circlip perfectly centered. One guy commented using a wood chisel. Seems like a pretty good idea. Definitely better than a screwdriver I would think due to the very fine tip

How many hours should this take a shop for both sides including new rotors & pads? (I’ll supply parts, or do it myself)
@NoNonsenseKnowHow3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what the book time is off hand. It is a industry standard thing. It will be in their computer system. Or you might be able to find it online somewhere. Also most shops don't like customers supplying their own parts. If you think you can take care of it yourself, that's probably the best bet. Definitely going to save the most and also have a satisfaction of knowing you did it yourself

@@NoNonsenseKnowHow I’m thinking it’s like $8-900 at a local shop I’ll get an estimate. But you are right. If I’m doing the brakes and rotors myself, it’s not a huge jump.
