To say that this is a bucket list item for me is the understatement of the century! I'd do it in the summer though. I've been to Norway, including the very north up until north cape several times now. Just never by train (2x cruise ship, 3x times car). It's an absolutely stunning country. And already I feel like I haven't been there for far too long. *starts making holiday plans for next year*

I've never been to Scandinavia but I have taken overnight winter trains through snowy landscapes in the US, and have to say that they were among the most scenic trains I've ever taken. There's something about being inside a warm and cozy train compartment or dining car, sipping a coffee or hot chocolate, enjoying a warm meal, or relaxing inside your room, admiring the snow-covered landscape as it passes by. Even better if you can get out now and then at extended stops to get some fresh air and admire the snow up close, knowing that there's a comfortable room waiting for you inside. And best of all is if the train has hot showers for you to use and some good books to read or movies to watch when it gets dark.

I think I will treat myself doing the same run, only the opposite direction. I live in the southern part of Norway right between Oslo and Kristiansand and its pretty clear the planet is changing. We have never had the northern light this south ever but the last year its become a regular occurrence even here. However thats not my main reason for wanna do this journey myself. Its just been too long since I went anywhere and I dont mind a long train-ride. But for now I will sit back and enjoy this video. MERRY CHRISTMAS.

Its pretty much high peak winter season in every part of Norway from around november to mid march but february we have the winter holidays and thats why prices is higher that particular week. In southern part of Norway we havent had a "black" Christmas since 1990 but this year there wont be no snow in this part of the country. Last year it was totally chaos since 15th of october and stayed that way until late march. Last night it was 9 + degree celsius which is not normal at all at this time of year and I woke up to a sunny morning today as well. Which is NOT uncommon in this part of the country year round. But up north its pretty much dark the whole winter. On the other hand they have the midnight sun during the summer, meaning sun never sets.

That 'light' at 14:30 is my ideal. Granted I'm guessing in summer there's too much daylight :) I complain as it is, in my part of Australia, with sunset at 20:15 on summer solstice.
@Potatwielder25 күн бұрын
Some of this journey was spent north of the arctic circle. There the sun doesn't set during high summer. Also seing you complain about the sun setting at 20:15 is quite funny, as even in Stockholm, it can set at around 15 to 23 depending on the season.

Great Trip! We did this in 2016.. Time for a recap.. It was a trip to never forget. On the way up from Stockholm, we got off at various stations, to do all kinds of activities, such as snow scooter driving, dog sled riding, etc. We also slept one night at the Ice Hotel. By the way, the delay during the night is caused by the fact that the train is put on a side track to let the heavy trains with iron ore pass by.

The reason this was built was because of the iron ore mining in Kiruna up in the north of Sweden. So it is the shortest route to an ice free year around transport to the rest of the world. Also the world most northern railway stations.
@ulfehrning7009Ай бұрын
Nice video from an extremely beautiful part of Scandinavia. The part between Narvik and Luleå is the Iron Ore Line which is one of the world´s oldest ore lines. It was inaugurated in 1903 and electrified in 1915. The Norwegian part (Narvik - Riksgränsen) is named Ofotenbanen. The main traffic on this line is all iron ore trains and they have priority over passenger trains.

The railway line between Narvik and Kiruna (Iron ore line) is one of the most spectacular in Europe so if you are travelling here once in your life you should plan to do it in daylight. The best time would be in July. Then it is starting to be green, but there is still snow on the mountain peaks. Especially on the Norwegian side you need to be glued to the window the whole time to take in the jawdropping scenery. By the way, Gävle is a must for a railway fan since the Swedish railway museum is there.

Pulling down the window blind for the night, in Scandinavia, in winter, seems a bit of a pointless exercise. 🙂 Although perhaps you don't want people peeking inside when stopping at a station. Whenever we're in a hotel, we like to leave the curtains open. Whether overlooking a beautiful bay in the Mediterranean, or the rooftops of Barcelona, is a pleasant way to wake up. Superalbs just posted a video of a trip aboard a train like you can see at 16:17, from Gävle to Stockholm. A coincidence? Or do you guys meet up and conspire to keep us addicted to your videos? 🙂

There has never really been much of passport controls between Norway and Sweden - outside of WWII (and some embarrassing period during 2020-2021), there is however a costume-border so some goods have fees, limits and regulations. Seems a bit of a waste to take the Narvik-Kiruna trip in midwinter dark conditions, it is supposedly one of the most beautiful train-rides.
