Ben Wallace is unique type of player, but he deserved the Hall of Fame nod. 4 DPOYs is a great achievement for an undersized big man
@Snafu234614 күн бұрын
I've always felt like he should have won 5, particularly 2004, he overall impact was so significant. 12.4 rebs, 3.0 blks, 1.8 stls. Top 10 in 3 def stats. Not to mention his court presence. Ben Wallace SHOULD have won DPOY from 2002, 03, (04), 05, and 06. Five straight DPOY. But I remember back in 2004 the sheer amount of lobbying Rick Carlisle keep mouthing about Ron Artest this, Artest that, blah blah. Not taking anything away from Artest (MWP now), but that was Ben Wallace's year as well.

I know it's a Big Ben video but 22:10 made me realize just how insane Duncan at #1 really is, played in the era of Prime Shaq/Howard/KG/Dirk etc arguably the most stacked Big Men era.. while having to carry the offensive load at times.. plus he did played till pretty late in his career and STILL be #1 in DRTG mean miles ahead the 2nd-5th..

Duncan and Russell will forever remain as the most underrated GOAT players people do give them praise, put them in their top 10-15 lists, but they just arent looked the same as other ones. and rightfully so, as they werent the same as other ones on that list, they were more rare types of players, but unfortunately defense will always remain as less flashy, more overlooked half of the game
@nostalgicbliss554712 күн бұрын
@@nbassasin8092 The crazy thing is that Duncan never won a DPOY in his career and it wasn't really undeserved either. Maybe except the one Camby won. But when you have monsters like Dikembe, Dwight Howard, Big Ben winning multiple DPOY awards, it's hard to win one in that era. Duncan was more consistent with his defense, but you can argue that those players were more dominant and impactful on the defensive end in their peak seasons than Duncan.
@nbassasin809211 күн бұрын
@@nostalgicbliss5547 I 100% agree with everything you said and I think the last part is key, and also, that last part is even more true when you look at MVP awards, thats why Ive never given too much attention to how many MVPs payer has, but how mny MVP level seasons player theoretically has and back on the DPOY, I never liked Lakers, and although I respect AD, Im not a fan of him, but the man has been a beast on defense for the past 3-4 seasons, and yet he is never even in debate for DPOY

To be fair, Ben did not stop shaq but he made shaq work like hell for every point he got. I can bet shaq would not want to go against him again cause no one else could pressure shaq that way at that time
@kerry-j4m14 күн бұрын
WHAT.Shaq wouldn't go against him again ??? LOL. Shaq gave Ben 35/38 pts a game in that finals series,plus,they had Resheed Wallace cheating back in the lane to double Shaq.Pressure Shaq ??? WHEN ?? Shaq was getting doubled by the Piston's guards also.
@nostalgicbliss554712 күн бұрын
The main advantage Detroit had was that Ben could cover Shaq 1 v 1 without needing help, which means he could play Shaq straight up without being murdered lol. Shaq was obviously going to get his, he was still in his prime and over a 100 pounds heavier than Big Ben, but it wasn't a complete massacre. He didn't average 40 points while grabbing 20 rebs on him and shooting 70 percent which is what Shaq would have done to majority of the Centers at that time if they defended him without help, especially if they were undersized and not named Rodman or Ben Wallace. Another important point was that Wallace out rebounded Shaq in that series, which means not a lot of second chance points for the Lakers off offensive rebounds.

Shout out to Bill Russell too who was the best defender ever when it comes to impact, a true pioneer.

A few years ago, I coached a junior team to a district championship, the schools first ever! Had a great set of kids I hade mentored and coached who really had unique tallents from one- another. My "guy" was a big kid who reminded me of myself in his age and I could coach him to adapt similar gameplay = He became a wrecking machine both in offense and defense. I showed inspiration to them from HOF NBA legends to give them a better understanding of what I was teaching them. Jordan, Pippen, Rodman, Shaq, Bird, Kobe etc. My "guy" became a retro-fan of Shaq and became obsessed about watching videos of how he played, and then we practised things and I taught him what worked/not worked. So..... One day after school hoyers was over he asked me; " Shaq was like a tank who moved over evreyone, no one could stop him when he attacked, right huh?" I responded; Sure he was a beast when he was great, but remember, he became lazy in his later years. But at the end of his prime, there was this one player I bet you have not heard or seen before - "Big" Ben Wallace! "No, was he that good to stop Shaq when he was at best?" - "YES he was", and I explained while Ben was not bigger then Shaq, he was strong enough and GREAT at defense and while he was not a great scorer, his job was rebounds and defense and the scoring was up to his teammates. That made his team near SWEEP Shaq & Kobe's Lakers to win the championship followed by again making the finals the year after. I taught him and my team that fancy scoring is overrated, that in the end of the day, sucsess is bult on understanding the game, understanding the basics of gameplay and ball handeling and understanding how to work as a team to play offense- and defense. I was very strict with defense training as I saw like in modern NBA to much poor defense when they free-played. I taught them to understand the value in how to "shutt-down" your opponents, especally if the opponents team relly on 1-2 guys to make the game. There was one school-rival team that was talked about and while I had not seen the kid, mu team was talking a lot about how tall he was and how good he was + some decent player as well. They where somewhat nervous for facing them. After some practices I just told them "Remmeber what I have taught you about defense, shut-down and fast-turnovers? THAT is how you can beat them. We have here two guys (my "guy" and my Rodman clone), and as well as you two play on both offense and defense now, combined with our fine shooter/playmaker, that is a great concept for making it very hard for them to score on us. And as said happend. They did as they had been trained and won again the 2nd staright district title, and they where so cocky about how good they where X-D. Sadly, I could not coach them more (byrocratic BS at the school) and the team lost both guys mentioned (families moved away :-( ), but I really hope they will continue to learn and grow as players and human beings! Nice kids.

I didn't make the High School team. Never played organized ball. I was never good enough, fast enough, tall enough at 5' 8" but I loved the game. I loved basketball. Much like how Ben Wallace was never passed the basketball, I learned that the only way I would get my touches, was to go out and get it. This led me to becoming a very good rebounder for my size. In a game dominated by the big and tall, I modeled my game after Ben Wallace. Because of this man (and Dennis Rodman,) trailblazing a way to play and dominate a game without scoring, I was able to find a role, and joy in the game of basketball. I would walk into the 24-hour Fitness Gym in California, with my Ben Wallace shirt (his picture, complete with Afro emblazoned on the front) and people would start calling me Ben Wallace. Being old, and retired; I still have many fond memories of the sport. I am grateful to this man for being the role model of a style of gameplay that allowed me to enjoy the game of basketball.
