You say that words ending in -tion have the syllable stress two syllables before the word. In this case "pronunciation" (PRO-NOUN-SEE-AT-TION) should have the stress on the "see", but instead it is on the first syllable, "pro". Can someone explain this?

Hi, I have been observing that there is no word with two or more syllables that ends an aa sound, so if the spelling ends with a then it takes the schwa sound. e.g. India, China, Pizza, Visa, Charisma, Banana. The mentioned words are ending with a, however all these words takes a schwa sound instead. Please let me know if my observation is correct.

Urvashi Bhatia you are right. but there are a few in British English (if you drop the final 'R') such as bizarre, cigar, guitar...

what is difference between word and sentence stress sir ? could you tell me sir ?
@pxtrichora7 жыл бұрын
Stress within a word changes the meaning of the word itself, while stress in a sentence can show the where the most important information is, change the purpose of a sentence, or other things. Word: Usually stressed by syllable length and force CONtract(noun) or conTRACT(verb), like he explained in the video Sentence: Usually stressed by pitch HE didn't take the money. (If he didn't take it, who did?) He didn't TAKE the money. (If he didn't take it, what did he do with it?) He didn't take the MONEY. (If he didn't take the money, what did he take?) He didn't take the money? (Stress at the end of the sentence makes it a question, the others are statements) Stress in sentences and words have to be done at the same time for the right meaning. The first syllable in money still has to be accented, no matter what stress the sentence has. I hope it helps :)

Au tum' nal sounds lazy rather than au' (with a circumflex o) and the primary stress on the first syllable as opposed to the second. A great number of speakers fail to pronounce words like regularly stressing all four syllables and often ad a letter to a word as in the popular pronunciation of the word, sherbet, adding a fictional additional letter r in the second syllable, altogether ignoring the spelling of the word: sherbet (shur' bit). I think the second syllable of sherbet, the first receiving a circumflex u sound when stressed, should be spoken with a short I, as in "it," rather than with a short u, as in the word butter. Incredibly Webster's cites a second or alternative pronunciation of the word adding the letter r to the second syllable, which in my opinion is colloquial in pronunciation and rather lazy. I pronounce the word, autumnal, with primary stress on the first syllable rather than the "accepted" second syllable. I have a hunch, in the case of this adjective, that most speakers are not very good at pronouncing certain words and so the popular second syllable stress peculiar in this case, is out of a lack of effort on the part of speakers. Why should I start pronouncing the word, Autumn, with a short u, as in the word tum, and place stress on the second syllable rather than the more distinguished sound of the circumflex o on the first syllable: au' tum nal, with equal stress or secondary stresses on the second and third syllables of the word. The sound of the word stressed in the accepted popular fashion sounds to this speaker pretentious: au tum' (as in tum) nel, which the last syllable sound that of a schwa due to the letter e sandwiched between the letters n and l. Like anyone's gonna fucking remember all that, you'd basically need to be a mental athlete to do it; unless this was presented mnemonically it's just a waste of time asking people to try and remember it because most of them won't.
