Every time my Ferrari has any issues or I discuss the costs of ownership, there's a 100% chance that people will start posting comments about "This is why I didn't buy a Ferrari" or "That's why I bought a Porsche" is another common statement. The reality is there's certainly reasons you didn't buy a Ferrari, but let's talk about it real for a minute...

I can't believe I watched that... He talks like a child and it speaks volumes as to who his audience is. It's very fitting that he spews nonsense and needs to jester to the world about what he has... He's insecure. What a tool. Also, I'm not one to judge people on looks but there's a lot of material on that guy.. He NEEDS a Ferrari with a mug like that.

@@normalguysupercar I'm a Rennlister - I watched the whole video, and get the point. I think if folks skipped around they may have just heard 5:00 which is missing the "if you want one" qualifier. Which sounds like you're suggesting we only bought Porsches because we can't afford Ferraris. But I get the whole point is that saying you didn't get a Ferrari because it was unreliable is likely BS - either you couldn't afford, or you didn't actually want one (I'm in the 2nd camp - I don't want one because I don't want the attention).

I’m 63 and own several cars. 64 Corvette, 71 Chevelle SS 454, 67 GTO, 67 Chevy II and 360 Ferrari. I’ve owned the American muscle cars close to 30 years. The 360 for about 5. I have spent more money on the Ferrari than the other 4 cars together. The fun factor on the 360 is incredible. My daughter is telling me I’m spending her inheritance. Not yet but close. I know Dan personally. I think he’s incredibly brave to make videos that show all sides of the Ferrari ownership issue. He knows I’m teasing about buying a Porsche. The fact is that I paid about the same for my Porsche as he did for his first Ferrari. He loves these cars and real car people understand that. Everybody has their thing. His is Ferraris and he’s willing to let us in and show how great the black prancing horse is.

I have driven 262,000 miles over 26 years in 3 Ferraris, none of them have ever let me down, most reliable cars I have ever owned but then I use them daily, warm them up carefully then thrash them like I stole them which is the only way a Ferrari likes to be driven. Actually Ferraris have always been reliable in the context of their era, for example a 1968 275 GTB would be able to drive all day at 140 mph across Europe at a time when a normal car would struggle to do the same trip at 100 MPH without breaking down, in 1972 a Daytona could do it at 160 to 170 MPH, again trouble free if used daily. I have a friend who has driven over 850,000 miles in Ferraris and never once broke down. The myths came from people who bought that same 1968 car 50 years later having been neglected for decades and somehow expected it to be everyday reliable. Today the problem is that these cars don't get used enough by their owners and like all modern cars are full of complex electronics so they develop the exact faults that a high end BMW or a Mercedes would develop if it is hardly used and again, the myths are reinforced.

Thanks Dan! I bought a 458 Speciale a couple years ago in large part due to your reassurance that the 458 wasn’t a brittle, unreliable car with unobtainable parts. After 10k+ miles, my experience has been the same as yours-as reliable as any modern car, screwed together the same way, with parts as familiar as any other car. The one caveat (as you’d probably agree?) are that some seemingly random parts are really expensive-factory floor mats, some minor body pieces, etc. Many parts are similar to BMW or Porsche parts price-wise (high relative to Honda or Toyota but not insane), and for the crazy expensive ones (like floor mats) there are some great alternatives (check out Autostyle in the UK). Overall my experience has been fantastic. As for attention, I don’t like it either, but I went with a dark color (Grigio Scuro) and surprisingly, I get a lot more attention and head turns in my yellow Lotus Elise. So the attention factor can be reduced a lot with color choice from my experience.

Often for the first year on your first exotic it can be very expensive, but it usually drops a lot after that. Also depends on how much insurance you buy. Legal minimum is way different from a policy that will pay for your car to actually get fixed or replaced in an accident.

The only reason I would buy one of these would be if I was a competent mechanic. I barely wrench. If I wanted the Ferrari experience, I recently saw the 2015 or so Maserati convertible. You can get one for about 30k. The engine similar to the 430 and being that it's in front it's easier to get to. There have been some cars that have gone up in value lately. I remember around 10 years ago 1st gen m3's we're going for 5K. Probably even earlier than that you could get a dino or a 328. For 20k. these days you're making too many Ferraris unless you're talking about the really expensive ones which none of us can afford anyway.

I recently ordered parts from three different places. The first place I ordered late at night and canceled my order in the morning. They still shipped it out. The second place well I'm not even going to get into that one. The third place, I was basically getting a little better deal then on the first place. The first place accidentally sent me eight spark plugs rather than six which okay. The second place which seemed to be the best deal. Didn't have the spark plugs. but I get the feeling that if I had contacted someone there that they could have gotten them for me. I got a special NGK plug that I wanted, their plug prices were high. Who knows maybe if I had asked them for those plugs. They might have had a decent price. I didn't want all this drama. When I had a BMW I just ordered from FCP Euro and that was it

I never thought I would ever own a Ferrari in my lifetime, it wasn't on my radar, and I wasn't even considering one. I've always been more of a Mustang/Viper/Corvette kind of guy. Until a friend bought a Pista. That's when I became familiar with the Ferrari brand, got a chance to sit in it, experience the handling, the interior materials, the whole Ferrari ethos. I went to the local Ferrari dealership wearing my Hellcat t-shirt, (cuz thats just me), and they didn't scoff, didn't make me feel unwanted. They were just cool af, welcomed me in to look around. I started to feel like maybe this was "for me". Later, I was able to get the Tributo, and man, what a difference! I also think Porsches are really excellent cars, and admire their quality and engineering, and McLarens and Lambos are cool af. Some Ferrari owners are class A jerks, but you get that with any brand. Don't overlook the fact that many more F-car owners have normal sized heads! Sometimes Ferrari haters are like the guy who looks at a supermodel and to make himself feel better says: "She has a crooked pinky toe nail", or her shoes don't match her outfit, or some other stupid sour grapes justification for being negative, when the real reason is that they can't afford it. Just accept the truth and be cool with yourself! I can't afford a 10 million dollar house, but don't hate those that can! Haterism is a waste of one's time and attention. I don't "look down" on any cars, actually. I love my simple, straightforward Siverado p/u which is my daily driver, and Jeeps, sedans, etc. Different cars for different purposes. Wish I could own them all! I guess I just love cars in general.

Bosch, Delphi, Lear, Magna, ZF, Conti...These are all examples of suppliers that provide parts and part sharing. An example are the Bosch mass air flow sensors on the 458 that likely cross reference to another car. Manga ride was developed by Delphi with help of GM and is now shared by Ford, Ferrari, Audi Porsche...Point is, car manufacturers have more in common than not because they have to due to COST. Switch gear, electronics and rotational parts like transaxles are all shared. Dan is right, age, neglect, environment are major contributors to all older cars having issues.

Hi Dan, this was a great video. I often have non-Ferrari folks ask about or tell me what trouble Ferrari's are and have to completely disagree. I have a 2015 Ferrari California T. Today it has 45,465 miles on the clock. Its the best car I have ever owned. The car has NEVER had a mechanical issue....NEVER! The quality of (modern) Ferrari is second to none. Everything is done well in the car with the highest quality materials and attention to detail. The only time my Ferrari ever goes in the shop is for regular maintenance and for those who don't know....Ferrari gives you 5 years of FREE maintenance (transferable by the way) with their modern cars. Cheers Dan for speaking out on this topic.

I still subscribe and like your channel. But, after owning both a 360 and 430, I just couldn't keep up with the "annoying" level of expensive problems (ie sticky buttons, door/switch issues, finicky F1 trans issues, leaking issues, sagging/breaking mounts, and blistering leather). My 360 cost in excess of $22K in maintenance over 3 yrs and the 430 came in at $14K over 2 yrs although 7K of that wasn't really the cars fault. I found myself not driving my Ferraris because of fear of the next expensive problem. I'm not a wrench so I do rely on shops. We can argue all day long on the right or wrong shop or dealer but it just seems Porsches are just give or take cheaper to deal with then Ferraris. I now have a '17 911 GTS which just doesn't give me the financial knot in my stomach every time I drive it that the Ferraris did. They're both great cars and different driving experiences but for whatever reasons I drive Porsches more than I did my Ferraris. I do agree though the REAL reason you probably didn't buy is because you couldn't afford it.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry.I have owned 11 Porsches (everything from a 356B-T6 to a 911 turbo) and two Ferraris (a 348TS and a Testarossa). The most expen$ive thing I EVER had to do with ANY of the Porsches, ever, was replace the clutch in my Turbo, which cost $11,000. I could spend almost that much on some of the simplest Ferrari parts and I'll bet that a similar clutch replacement in a 488 would be 3x that much. There's much, much more to the cost of maintenance than just the frequency at which it's required; there's also the cost of the individual services. Porsche dealerships charge a whole lot for even simple things like oil changes, yes; Ferrari dealers charge ASTRONOMICAL, are-you-kidding-me amounts for the same type of service. Example: the alternator in my 512TR went bad. A new Ferrari one was $2,700. I went to a local wrecking yard and bought an identical alternator from a Chevy Vega for $75! IDENTICAL, and it worked like a charm for two years! Talk to almost any Ferrari owner and they'll tell you "they're so much better than they used to be." True enough - because they were so lousy for so long. Another aspect of comparison: you can still get parts for a 356 from Porsche or numerous aftermarket places; after 10 years, try to get a part, practically any part, for a Ferrari. Check the for-sale Ferrari ads: "Ferrari 458, 5,200 miles, recent engine rebuilt" Huh? Finally, if you have an accident, even a fairly modest one, you can expect your Ferrari to be totaled because the cost of repair is over the moon. I enjoyed my Ferraris, and, yes, modern ones are better. But Ferraris are mostly driveway jewelry. When I belonged to the Ferrari Club of America, we went on a 500-mile road trip with 17 Ferraris. Five of them never made it home! Basically, this guy is full of nonsense. The only thing less reliable than even a modern Ferrari is something like a McLaren. If you believe this foolishness, buy a Ferrari and see for yourself.

I agree the real reason for most people is actually just money. But hassle really is a big reason to not own one, particularly for people who really can afford it. Someone who may enjoy the car in running order won't necessarily enjoy all the time and effort it takes to keep it in running order. The reliability of modern cars makes that less of a concern than it used to be, but it's still there. It's like someone who might go skiing if they lived next to a mountain, but not if they lived far away and had to drive many hours to get there. Sure, for most people the expense might be the real reason, but there are plenty of people who can easily afford it for whom the hassle is the actual reason.

In case there was a tie break, entrants had to complete a sentence beginning with ‘I’d like to drive a Ferrari because …..’ using no more than 16 words. I didn’t win the competition because my order of importance was different to the panel that chose the order of importance but Jeremy Clarkson did use my winning sentence in one of his Top Gear reviews. My sentence was ‘I’d like to drive a Ferrari because everyone would know I had arrived before I’d even set off’.

I was thinking about buying a Ferrari for a long time so I did😊 nice video one thing I found about the negative attention that was driving exotic cars in general is that people will yell at you for the smallest of things. Very strange. You really have to drive Miss Daisy and follow all the rules of the road which if I'm being honest nobody does. However if it comes down to a rolling stop with a minivan no one will say a thing but if you're driving a Ferrari you can bet you're going to get yelled at😅

I've owned and maintained both Ferrari and Porsche. Both go wrong and both are expensive to fix, however there is a fundamental difference in the engineering quality of a Porsche, IMS bearing issue on selected models notwithstanding, that is superior to that of a Ferrari. Having to fix stupid things (E.G. Petrified fuel hoses, leaking fuel tank, broken exhaust headers, faulty potentiometer throttle assemblies, exhaust clamps, etc.) because the engineering design didn't meet the appropriate quality specification was and is annoying. I was doing that far more often with the Ferrari than I was with the Porsche. Hence my preference Porsche engineering over Ferrari design. Everybody to there own.

It is NOT 7-year warranty - it is a 3-year WARRANTY - and 7 years of Free Annual Servicing. But after year 3 - is a part FAILS - you have no warranty unless you extend the warranty for $5,000 per year (for a V8 model). I own a 458 spider so I am keenly aware. Cheers Dan - great video!

Having owned a Ferrari (430) and Porsche (C2S and 991 turbo) I can say unequivocally that the Ferrari was a piece of junk compared to the Porsche. Not to mention that the turbo simply blows away the Ferrari from a performance standpoint in spite of similar horsepower ratings (490 vs 520). A friend of mine took his 430 (manual) to the track and commented that it felt like the car was going to fall apart. Now I do think that the the 458 is a much better car than the 430 was. Here's something else to consider: there has been a slew of carjackings in the Chicago area recently. I can just imagine worrying about this every time I take my Ferrari into the city. I can't deny that I've been looking into purchasing a 488 GTB but I can assure you that the price of entry is not a consideration for me as I would pay cash for the car so your generalization about why people avoid Ferraris is wrong. There are legitimate reasons for avoiding these cars.

They allowed me to sell the Portofino after one year of ownership to “maintain the relationship” I made a good chunk selling the Portofino and I’m left with the Pista I originally wanted. Unfortunately it was a lot of bullshit though. If you are in the club you are basically driving them for free though as you will make money. An excellent strategy for being able to afford a Ferrari is to transfer your ownership into a Grantor trust you create. Create a LLC for anonymity and asset protection, and then transfer your Grantor rights to the Trust. The LLC becomes the Beneficiary. You own nothing but control everything still because you are the Donor. You have all the power under the Powers of Appointment Act of 1951. Rent the car back out to yourself, whether you have a loan on it or not. Huuuuuge tax benefits!

Its not or never for the 348. the all analog 348 is the predecessor to the consensus best sports car Ferrari ever made - the 355. the 348 doesn't have the expensive to repair brass value and/or electronic suspension issues the 355 has. the 348 represents Less is More and Older is Easier when it comes to Ferrari Sports cars. Most anyone can work on a 348 on most repairs as while the 348 is not a grocery getter its definitely a daily driver. Also the 348 has a flat plane crank which generates the same F1 exhaust note as Formula one cars use flat plane cranks to lower the weight of the cars. the 348's exhaust note sounds "pissed." at $65k for a 30k mile or less 348 it's now or never before 348s become the air cooled 911s of the Porsche community. You can't lose with a solid 348. Slam dunk. No bigger bang for the buck out there.

I agree with everything you say and I mean the ones who come up with various excuses why they didn't buy a Ferrari. These are not honest why they didn't buy a Ferrari like this is about, are people who always come up with excuses and excuses for most things that happen in their lives. Then if you are afraid of what can happen if you own a Ferrari, you should not and stay inside because these are afraid of most things. Then those who then own a Ferrari but are afraid to drive it because they are afraid it will lose value, I don't see these as real petrolheads and have seen many examples of that on KZbin. You buy a Ferrari or whatever brand of car you choose, to enjoy it. Because the experiences and enjoyment you have every time you drive your car cannot be measured in money. What does it matter if you drive for example the Ferrari 458 Special Aperta 100,000 miles with it and it is no longer worth that much, because the number of miles tells how much you have enjoyed driving it. If you get a little for it when they sell it doesn't matter, but I think now someone else can enjoy it as much as I did but couldn't afford to pay as much as they are asking for the low miles. Also, the new owner does not need to be afraid of using the car because it would get too many miles on the car. I mean what joy do you have over a car that is garage qeens and it is usually these garage qeens that break because they have been driven too little and then things dry out and break easily. This then means that it is better to buy, for example, a Ferrari with more miles on the odometer than with a few miles on the odometer, because the one with few miles on the odometer will probably break down faster if it is an older Ferrari precisely because of the aforementioned, in order not to forget that the tires on these are usually old original tires that have become old and become life-threatening.

Let’s get this clear. A Ferrari should NOT come with a huge price tag just to be sloppy in certain areas. There’s no excuse. You can’t say “ older cars have problems “ I’ve got a truck with 215k miles and a car with 130k miles. Neither of them, EVER need anything. No codes. Nothing. Yet, you Ferrari owners are CONSTANTLY replacing shit. “ Worth every penny “ when there’s PLENTY of cheaper cars that handle way better. Y’all just like the idea of the flex. Youd rather be seen. They are not all that fast & don’t handle that well.

I actually own a Porsche 997 for almost 12 years now. It meanwhile has some 140,000 miles on the clock. Although I consider it a reliable car where rarely something breaks, I have invested some 30,000 $ over the last years including a complete engine revision. But I still love it. I will never sell it. I didn't buy a Ferrari up to 2019. Why? Because they break? No, because the purchase price melts a hole in your wallet. Meanwhile I own a 458 spider. With its red color and engine noise it attracts attention. I am not arrogant and smile at people if they are interested in the car. And you know what? I only get the nicest conversations and always thumbs up. Be nice and people react nicely! How fast did I go with it? Vmax! Which is a bit over 200 mph. I was lucky to do it on public highways. Because I am one of the lucky guys who live in Germany with its Autobahn. But the car is best on curvy country roads. The acceleration and the sound are glorious! I have been driving it for some 15,000 miles now. It is very reliable and so much fun to drive.

Absobloodylutely, 100% correct Dan. Every car i've owned, from a 5 series BMW, CLK Mercedes, Porsche, Range Rover and now, my F430, has been described as ' a Hairdresser's car'! A Range Rover(?). Let's have it straight now. Just say "I can't afford one and the mere fact you have one, really pisses me off"! Not my problem. I buy a car because I want ond. Same reason why I have a Honda GL1800 Goldwing. I wanted it. Don't give me the 'fuel economy' thing, that's just the lamest thing ever. Can't afford the fuel? Then you can only dream of the car. A Truck driver tried to piss me off by parking his Tractor unit close to my car. That just proved everything. I told his boss that he'll NEVER have anything like this, with that childish, jealous attitude through life. I have a pic. Wish I could post it for you. As you say, they are expensive and we are the lucky 'few'. If you can't afford to buy one, don't look at us as if that's our fault. It's just the way life is. Maybe if you'd taken education seriously or, taken things a tad more seriously earlier in life.......?
