I really wish Norma never ignored the fact the Norman was sick. Everyone around her kept trying to tell her but she wouldn’t listen to the point where it ended her life. Sure she got him into PineView for like 2 weeks then she let him come home. Smh

Courtney Michelle I think that's what pissed me off the most about the situation. Norma was so ignorant and blind to how Norman really was. She loved and adored him so much to the point that it hindered her ability to see flaws in him, and even after she knew he was dangerous, remained negligent.

in the original movie which bates motel is based on, norman is mentally ill because of norma, she always said no girl was ever good enough for him other than herself, and some might say she loved him in the other way (romantically), which caused him to be too attached to her and fall for her which resulted in him killing everyone who gets to norma, and no one can have her so he kills her. the reason i think bates didn’t show how sick norma is and all is because everyone likes the actress too much and didn’t want to ruin her character

I like how they made this scene a big deal with the playing of Mr. Sandman (The song Norman and Norma sung together a lot when Norman was a child) and showing the inside of the vents with Norman shutting them. How perfectly this show is written that everything that happened makes total sense. Norma did everything she could to always protect and defend Norman. She crossed moral lines, she neglected Dylan, she lashed out, and even emotionally abused her family. She came from a home with such abuse and emotional baggage, was raped and violated so many times, abuse and instability was everything she knew. When she finally has something good and special with someone, she wouldn't ever, ever have seen clearly enough to fix things, even when those around her were warning her and begging her to open her eyes. Romero himself at times refused to leave her alone with Norman and I'm sure he beat himself up over it in prison after this. Her unhealthy attachment and judgment clouded by abuse, trauma and fear, ultimately led to her death and it makes perfect sense that this is how it would end up being her fate. She shunned Romero when he pushed her right before this to send him back to an institution, pushed him right out of her life over her unhealthy relationship with her son. And the worst part is, through all the abuse, irrational decisions and screaming at people, she only ever did it out of motherly love and her own experience being mistreated and abused. It all makes too much sense and thats why this scene hurt me so badly is because (I hadn't scene or heard much at all of the original movie so this episode caught me way off guard. I'm used to the comfort of tv shows never killing off their main characters.) I had nothing to really be mad at because she really did this to herself.

Best scene in the series from the best episode in the series too. Incredible that the full sequence from Norma coming home distraught right to the end takes up HALF the episode and just features Norma and Norman and for the last segment, Romero. Everything about it, from the music and acting to the visuals and editing is just absolutely phenomenal. The boiler flames morphing into the Bates Motel sign, Romero inconsolable grief, the last, haunting images of Norman and Norma splayed out lifeless on the floor in the cold, blue light, Romero's desperate CPR on Norma seemingly reviving Norman and not her and Norman's slow head turn followed by that last, broken "Mother" are just all brilliantly executed and unforgettable moments. Creepy, gut-wrenching, heartbreaking and beautiful, in short some of the best 20 odd minutes of television drama I've EVER seen.

This was my favourite part of the show thus far. From Norman and Norma talking about Hawaii, up til Norman saying, "Mother"? The tragedy was perfectly set up. The fact that his intention wasn't to murder Norma, but for them both to softly die and stay together forever, hence the name of the episode. Mr. Sandman playing while showing different still shots of the house is just haunting. The air vents shutting, sealing their fate. Then Romero breaking down over her body is utterly devastating. This is pure gold.

Everyone hates Norman but for some reason he was my favorite character. In a way you can’t blame him since he isn’t really with reality. He wanted to kill Norma and himself as a way of getting a “fresh start” which he was previously talking about with Norma, so they could be happy and together forever since the world had done them such wrong. As I see it, his heart was in the right place in some messed up way since he was insane. That or he had blacked out when he did this and it wasn’t really him. That’s what makes it so hard to judge. When he does terrible things you can hardly blame him because he can’t even remember it. If he had been treated at a younger age that could make it possible for him to lead a normal life but Norma wouldn’t let that happen and neglected him as a child which made me dislike her and definitely choose Norman over her. Everyone seems to see it the other way around so I wanted to state my opinion.

Exactly. Its not like he understands why he’s doing what he’s doing he needed serious help which he never got but in the end it cost so many people their lives. Other people in the show killed others and knew what they were doing. Norman didn’t he couldn’t even remember. Im not excusing it though he did kill people and when he was on trial he wasn’t going to jail he was going to a mental institution which he really needed to but people don’t understand that Norman wasn’t all there. On the other hand, Norma wasn’t all bad but she was messed up, she covered up her son’s murders, never got him help, was way too possessive and over protective not to mention when Norman tried to break away she’d manipulate him into doing what she wanted, Norman obviously wasn’t born with DID it happened because of his past and trauma mostly from Norma he never hallucinated anyone else, thats the problem.

This entire series spoke to me and resonated with me in a way that is unspeakable. The music they play in this series really portrays the show properly. When Norman killed his mother, it made me cry because my mother is still alive and she is my hero. Seeing Norman kill his own mother was a blow that I couldn't handle. Norma never really let him grow up, and that was partially why he ended up becoming a serial killer / psychotic individual. He kept the mentality of an 11 year old. Plus not to mention, he had D.I.D.(Dissociative Identity Disorder). That really took things to a whole other level. When he was a little boy, he had to kill his father to protect his mother. That was when everything clicked the wrong way. It's kind of like the show Dexter, where he saw his mother get butchered in front of him and had to sit in a pool of her blood for 2 or 3 days in a shipping cargo container. Dexter then became a serial. It became a normality for him, just like Norman Bates. This is a very sad series

alphabetical order this show is in.. let's say an alternative dimension, than the original movie, there's cells phone's, future technologies, I don't think the show is cannon with the movie like that.. it's just based off the movie, but I hate they killed her this way, so unexpected

Chris Beach I understand, but it is branded as a prequel. Which doesn't really make sense because of, well, everything you've explained. I see where you're coming from though.

Just watched this episode yesterday for the first time and I couldn't sleep last night lmao My empathetic ass gets so attached to fictional characters it sucks. I'm late to the party and feel like I have no one to discuss it with so I'm just pouring my feelings on old KZbin comments. Ugh I don't think I'll be able to watch season 5, it's too sad.

The most heartbreaking scene of the entire show... I will never get over Romero's death... Poor man entered such a sick and damaged family.. he signed his death sentence from the moment he fell in love with her...

it was that moment I started truly hate Norman while seeing his pleasure when seeing Alex's pain... he wasn't just sickminded, he was totally evil and selfish bastard, Norma made huge mistake spoiling him so much, but after all they've been through no wonder she was always by his side. what disappointed me in this scene was how he killed her.... in movie it was much more cruel and awful I felt like here it was not enough.... only character I felt sorry about was Alex..... Also no one blames Norma for the way she dumped all her emotional needs on Norman since he was a child? What else to expect if she raised him for her? The oldest ran away from her feeling the danger she was pulling him into, he constantly rejected her suffocating love, but poor Norman as younger and more sensitive ,fell into his mom's trap. We raise kids to make them independent, not to tie them to us forever.
