You should check out Spencer NC one day. The Southern had a largest repair and maintenance facility that was half way between Washington and Atlanta. The site is now home to the North Carolina Transportation Museum that has restored the roundhouse and it's full of trains, steam, diesel, and all kinds of freight car and passenger cars. The larger city of Salisbury up the road a couple miles has a huge restored Southern Railway station that is used for special events center and has an Amtrak station. I'd love to meet up with you and show you around one day. I live just outside Salisbury NC and I worked at the NCTM for 4 years when I was a teenager before going on to work with a man that traveled the country rebuilding steam locomotives.

I live about 3 miles from the Bristol station!!! NS uses DPUs on the Bristol-Pulaski line primarily because it is kind of hilly...not steep grades but long ones. Using DPUs help out in the horsepower, but greatly help out in train handling having a 2 mile train stretched out over multiple hills...
@timatwell37282 жыл бұрын
They just finished redoing the train station in the town of Tazewell Va. it's about 75 miles north east of Bristol. They run the rear engines here because of the heavy loads of coal and steep grades for pushing and braking power
@mysterion43012 жыл бұрын
I surf rail cams at night when I can't sleep and notice a lot more DPUs in mountainous areas (Tehachapis) than I do out on the plains. I'm amazed at how many huge trains (10,000' or more) I see in the Midwest that are only 2 or 3 Lead and ripping along at 60mph. I'm loving seeing more 'foreign power' out here in the West so that I can enjoy seeing something 'exotic' running along with our UP and BNSF power.

A nice change of pace Brian. I was laughing to myself when I read a piece in a UK rail magazine a couple of weeks back, apparently we mustn't call ourselves train spotters or rail fans anymore. The term to describe ourselves is "rail enthusiasts". Go fgure! So the article went, this is to be more inclusive of those persons interested in ALL aspects of railroading, not just trains if you can believe that. It's a crazy world.
@eastterminalrailway59752 жыл бұрын
That doesn't even make sense, if you like "tankers" as the lad said, than that's what you will look for and enjoy! Yes, crazy world.

The coal cars filled with old ties is likely on its way to Alton Illinois. That’s just north of St. Louis. There is a power plant there right at the junction of the Missouri and Mississippi rivers. The power plant was built to burn used railroad ties, about 1.2 million of them per year from NSRR. The plant is built at the spot where Louis and Clark had their first encampment and began their trip westward to survey the western US. I found the marker in the woods when we were designing the power plant about 30 years ago.

BNSF has 20-25 old MW tie service hoppers/gons sitting in my area full of new ties with the Herzog MPM train for an upcoming tie replacement project. There also is a daily manifest from NS that runs on the BNSF sub in my area, H-NSINTW. If memory serves me correct it starts in Elkhart, IN, is handed off to BNSF at Cicero, Ill then goes to Northtown/Minneapolis, MN. It also runs the reverse route too.

Here in Oregon, on the UP mainline to California we also see BNSF, CN, CP, NS, and CSX units. Plus three miles to the west is GWI's Portland & Western (where I retired from). And, to the east is the Albany & Eastern and their neat little railroad (and they bought and are running a 2-6-2 steamer now and then). Lots of variety here!

The DPU's help control longer trains, push power AND braking! Applied brakes, front and rear.
@billmoran38122 жыл бұрын
Distributed power is what allows very long trains to operate. They reduce “string forces” which it the pull of the train against the rails as the train goes through a curve. The pull of the cars sideways against the curve tries to straighten the curve. It will eventually shift the rails causing them to go out of gauge. DPU in the train offers a shoving force that counters string force.

They go all the way to Chicago, plus into Tennessee and Alabama a bit I am pretty sure. BNSF power runs through on the NS to points East bringing general freight, Powder River Coal, Intermodal, Grain, and often to keep trains competitive the BNSF will allow NS or CSX or UP to pool the power to keep a competitive advantage. Just about all Mainline RR'S do this.
