A tip for cyclists: there is a site called friends on the bike ( vrienden op de fiets in Dutch ). This site has also been translated into English. If you become a member for a small amount, you can spend the night at people's homes and you are not always dependent on campsites and hotels.

Nice video! I will follow you two. My wife and I want to cycle the Eurovelo 15/Rhine route to the Oberalppass. And by train back to the Netherlands. Good luck👍

I'm planning this route as well. Can you take bikes back on the train to Amsterdam?
@Martin-on2pp
@Martin-on2pp Жыл бұрын
@@bobalinga Yes you can. The best way is to contact the ' treinreiswinkel' . A dutch company specialized in international travel by train. There is a direct nighttrain (the Nightjet) and several daytrains (is that the correct word?). By day you have to change a few times, but that shouldn't be a big problem. Advantage by day, you can choose a trainroute alongside the Rhine. Then you can see from the train what you have cycled.

Yes, you should be able to take your bikes on the train to Amsterdam. We have taken our bikes on trains in Switzerland from Basel to Andermatt without any problem, but haven't done it all the way to Amsterdam. Not all types of trains take bikes, and sometimes the online booking platforms aren't set up that well for booking bikes. It's probably easier just to go to a train station once you're in Switzerland and get them to book it for you. Often you can save money by doing it in advance, but you not not be in a position to do that if you don't want to tie yourself to an exact date. Definitely on Swiss trains you will pay an extra fee for taking the bikes, not sure which other trains/countries do that. And you can expect to have to change trains a few times. But it's definitely "doable". Maybe @Martin-on2pp has done some research on this already and can add to this?

@@daphnebehindbars Hmmm. Yt deleted my reaction. So again. Thereare many trains going from Basel or Zurich to Amsterdam. A nightrain sleeper is comfortable, but in high demand during high season. By day there are lots of options. If you don't mind to transfer 1 or 2 times.

This brings back fond memories. Ironic how the nicest camping grounds are usually cheapest or free. Thank you for sharing your adventures, I had a bad crash on my last tour in 2018 so will probably never ride again (PTSD) but to do it vicariously is almost as good. Fair winds, fellow Canucks.

I absolutely love your videos. U do such a great job Daphne. How is it that you come up with the routes you and Frank want to travel, what resources do you use? Can’t wait for next episode. Cheers

Thank you so much Holly! Frank and I are not fans of road riding, so we love Europe because of the fantastic cycling infrastructure there. Our greatest resource is the EuroVelo network and the website en.eurovelo.com/ All these cycle routes use existing pathways and small roads, routing you whenever possible away from busy highways. Many of the more developed and popular ones have excellent signage too. EV 6 and EV 15 two of the most popular routes. EuroVelo routes by their nature are never the quickest way from A to B, as they follow winding rivers and paths and often detour to take you by points of interest. Another possible resource can be found at cycling.waymarkedtrails.org/ This shows hundreds of "way-marked" routes all over Europe. We haven't needed to use that one too much. We also get lots of information and ideas from other cyclist's KZbin videos. For last year's trip, because we had heard about the Alps to Adriatic Trail (Austria to Italy, and not a EV route) by word-of-mouth several years ago, we knew we wanted to build that into our route, so we just picked other EV routes to work in with it.

Sorry for a late comment here but I only just now discovered your channel. First of all, thanks for the great videos! EV15 has been on my bucket list since I first heard about it and I expect to do bits of it this summer as part of a "Rhine-Maas-Venn-Kyll-Mosel-Rhine tour. Second, the gentleman who was guiding you about 10 minutes into this video was warning you about stinging nettles, not mosquitoes.

Looking back on it, would you say the industrial Rhine part is worth it? We have cycled the romantic part and most of the Dutch parts already and we've been to Basel but we are playing with the thought of doing the whole thing.
@daphnebehindbars
@daphnebehindbars Жыл бұрын
That's a good question. Frank and I are happy we included all of the industrial section as we found it interesting and educational to see all the big refineries, factories and industrial towns and observe all the big barges that brought the raw materials up-river from Rotterdam. How would I ever have know that Duisburg has the world's largest inland port if we hadn't ridden through there!!!! But it wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea, especially if your time is limited and you need to maximise your "miles to scenery" ratio. It's fine for us as we're retired and in no hurry. For many, the section from the Netherlands border to Cologne could be left out. Cologne to Remagen isn't bad and has good pathways. Then from Remagen on to Koblenz it keeps getting nicer. For us, the biggest downside of the industrial section was the lack of campgrounds close to the cycle route. So you have to be prepared for that. We didn't ride the section from Lake Constance to the source - I think it would be great to do that part (in spite of the climbing!) Hope this answers your question. Happy planning and pedalling!
