I work for Amazon as a package delivery guy now, used to be a trucker making 1,300/week before tax salary and I’m still making only about $200 less after tax monthly, living way better, less stress, If you do the math and put the same amount of time in at a regular job you actually make more off the road in my experience in the industry so far. Was a driver for 2 years, not worth it

I agree with you on a lot of points however when it comes to the topic of brokers!!! They are definitely a huge part of the problem in this industry. Brokers are actively!!! Working together and conspiring with one another to keep rates low, and push more and more of these garbage rates!! I myself have seen loads coming out of Indianapolis going to Joliet, IL paying as low as 250.00!!! And when I tried to negotiate the price, the broker hung up. Brokers have become so booshie they don’t even want to treat you like a decent person they are just pushing these garbage rates and if you don’t want it they just move on because they know there’s many guys right behind you that are so desperate they are gonna take that junk ass rate.

Right now, I delivered on Tuesday morning and have no idea when my next load is. Personally, no idea why. I haul a lot of lumber and hardwood flooring. These industries are constantly pumping out product but we have to many trucks for the loads. Luckily, I still have a few companies that pay good outbound, ut as always crap inbound. I have started refusing loads for east coast and west coast because of the rates.

The trucking industry became over saturated with drivers during the pandemic. The diesel prices keep going up to balance things out. The government is doing this intentionally to get back control of the trucking industry. The less trucking companies the more control the government has. There is not a truck driver shortage. Its actually too many.
@halevictor
@halevictor 7 ай бұрын
Now there's a conspiracy theorist. No, the industry wasn't saturated with drivers during the pandemic. Yes, there is a very critical shortage of drivers and has been for about 3-5 years. It's very real and isn't going away soon. More drivers are leaving this industry than ones coming in. In the current environment with freight volumes down it isn't as noticeable as it was in previous years but make no mistake there are nowhere near enough drivers for normal volumes. The same shortage will exist and wreak havoc once volumes come back to normal.
@truckdriver_8469
@truckdriver_8469 7 ай бұрын
@@halevictor there is no truck driver shortage at all. Any truck stop or rest area I go to rarely has anywhere to park. Maybe several years ago there was a shortage but definitely not now. Apparently, you don't drive many places otr, because the trucking industry became over saturated with drivers during the pandemic due to high rates they were paying. After the pandemic the rates dropped and now many trucking companies are selling their equipment and going out of business.
@halevictor
@halevictor 7 ай бұрын
@@truckdriver_8469You might want to do a little checking on that one. This one is an easy one. Currently the US is about 80,000 drivers short and most studies predict that by 2030 we might very well be 160,000 drivers short. There was no over saturation during the pandemic. In fact the opposite was true. When you say "due to the high rates" I'm assuming you're talking about freight rates, which were very high, but freight rates do not attract company drivers ... wages do. Just because rates are high that doesn't necessarily equate to higher wages. Depends on who owns the trucks and how bad they need drivers. Drivers wages have definitely gone up, which they should have long ago, but the reality is that the driver shortage started the wage increases across the board. Since the start of this shortage of drivers could and still can go anywhere they want. Very few trucking companies have full trucks and it's why they're all promising the world to drivers. In order to keep the drivers you had, carriers were forced to increase wages or lose more drivers. My company increased driver wages 3 times in 18 months during the pandemic due to the shortage. This is by far the worst it's been in my time in this profession and it's getting worse with really no end in sight.

What you fail to discuss is the fact that just like the number of trucks went out the number of brokers skyrocket and now those brokers are all fighting over the same freight just just to have something that they can post and this is artificially pushing rates lower. When things are good they took out loans to leverage their market to help them expand. And just like if you notice meadowlark at the very end when they start to lose it they were offering higher rates because I didn't plan on paying

I believe the future will be train for hauling long haul and trucks from train terminal to distributor, going to be mid/short haul jobs. States will eventually goto an alternative powered (not diesel)truck required for hauling into cities. Not to mention the driver issue, if there are too many drivers then when does it come time to revoke work visas from outside countries for truck drivers? We need absolute broker transparency- exact breakdown of charges. It will be interesting times ahead, probably never back to what it was but more specialized trucks, the days of one type of truck doing everything is fading away.

in the ltl sector is a thing called artificial scarcity. they hide behind trade secret law to obstruct justice on antitrust law compliancy. what this means is restricted job growth/creations, restricted trade, price gouging, and unserviced customers who need to wait for service. and too high barriers for competitors to jump in to compete. but each sector is different. parcel is duopoly. but what werner enterprises picks up spot freight and is competing with each owner operator and his mother and cousin. so the workers at companeis like werner can't negotiate or price gouge, they take what's given or pick something else. and then the shippers can get together if there is few shippers of a market and come together to raise prices and violate antitrust laws vs companies like werner or owner ops. so what this means is maybe price gouging in the form of ultra unprofitable rates for truckers. etc. wait time as shippers is different with each company and each shipper reciever. fedex ground has drivers wait over night at their terminals without pay. but if working for a company like werner you can go find another shipper instead. but in ltl the wait times for drivers is generally shorter and you get paid, but this sectors lacks job creations. etc.

Usually I bitch about delays. I delivered a load last weekto an Amish Lumber Co. The owner was not there and would not be for 2 hours. Normally I would bitch but that is becoming the norm. The boss'es wife baked me cookies while I was waiting. Damn Good cookies. Sometimes the wait is worth it.

I have a 2003 Ram 2500 with 5.9 diesel and 2 wheel drive. I was told I could get 2x KBB value. I was looking at a 2024 Ram 2500 4x4 at 67500 bucks. My 2003 would cover in trade in almost half the cost. I didn't do it due to I love my truck.

Dude is clueless for the most part. At least in the American market. People are broke. Inflation has ate up people’s savings. Majority of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck. There is less freight because the dollar doesn’t go as far. People haven’t gotten smarter, they just got broker. There is a repo crises currently going on. The housing market is dead. I make 100k a year and I would struggle to afford a 200k house at 9 percent with just putting fha required 3.5 percent down. We will be seeing more and more slums in America. American will become the new Venezuela with the rapid inflation. American politicians will keep changing the data to read the opposite.
