NORTHSEAKAYAK - Rescue Training Dredger Rio chapter 3

Is it possible to board a bigger commercial vessel without loosing speed? That was the question that we had in case we need to be extracted in an emergency situation. We trained with captain Ruben and his Rio crew already a few times, where he picked us up as swimmer or even the whole kayak crew with their boats. So we wanted to try something that hasn’t been done before, to see if this is manageable or just a fantasy. Have a look, because it works well (if trained properly and with good arrangements in advance with the boat crew). This is boarding a moving vessel like pilots do it, but with a sea kayak.

Dankjewel Bea! Dit was een ferm gevoel, zeker omdat de koers zelfde moet zijn, en de snelheden afgestemd. Schip zelf maakt niet veel lawaai, maar je voelt de trillingen heviger worden naarmate het dichter kruipt.

I'm amazed that a commercial vessel agreed to do this exercise with you. It's a very interesting concept, but much more difficult in a vessel with a high freeboard. Rather than doing it the way a pilot boat does, it would probably be better to do it like recovering a rescue boat or daughter craft. If the crew heave you a line that you connect quickly to your bow, it becomes like a long painter line. The kayak would quickly come alongside, and the length of painter adjusted to position the kayak by the pilot ladder (or another boarding arrangement). Definitely not an easy manoeuvre, and practice would be required...but I can't think of anyone else better suited to the task!

Thank you so much for your positive reaction, much appreciated! The Rio has also a very high freeboard when not loaded, maybe 3 to 4 meter. The plan was to lower a rope ladder, get on it and haul the kayak aboard with help of the crew, or even with their small crane. So, something to test!😎👌

Spannende aktie 👍. Goede oefening voor als we in de toekomst ons piraten werk weer moeten oppakken 😉. Nu lag deze wel lekker diep in het water door zijn lading en kon je zo bijna overstappen.

Dankjewel! Ja, eerste keer dat we het op deze manier probeerden. Als ie niet geladen is hadden we nog een plan B dat ook werkt: touwladder en dan kajak laten opwinchen met de kraan. Maar daarvoor ging het schip toch wel sterk moeten vertragen. Maar.... het is mogelijk.

Sorry you think this way. As you can see in our videos, we train a lot on different rescue scenarios. This brings safety within our sport to a higher level. If it was unsafe, the captain would not have participated in this exercise. And it is exactly the same as pilots do, but with a kayak instead of a pilot vessel. Hope this gives some insight?
