I know that your video and review is over 2 years old but I wanted to thank you for this excellent review. I was shopping for a power washer and based on your review I purchased the 2.5 GPM 3300 PSI Northstar unit. (#157123). My wife and I both watched the review, and purchased both the rotating nozzle and the pressure gauge. I am a "belt and suspenders" person so I fully read (underlined and highlighted) both manuals - the one for the spray/pump and the one for the Honda engine. Assembled everything slowly and "by the book." Hooked everything up in order - and presto - started on 2nd pull and it does and amazing job. I was wondering how long it was safe to run the pump so I called the Kat pump folks. The tech rep said it can run 24/7 as long as the oil is ok - AND you must turn off the engine if you are not going to spray for 2 minutes of more. He said walking away from the sprayer for more than about two minutes with the engine running will often damage the pump. He explained why but I didn't understand it. My wife and I agree that you are a very good teacher and you have a great voice tone and style. Many thanks from San Antonio, TX

Yes E.C., just about 6yrs. now- hard to believe. While mine hasn't ever seen hardcore use- It still works like it's day one. Glad to hear you and your wife like my style. Much appreciated from OK. As for the pump, the main reason to not let it idle for long periods (2min max using your reference from Cat) without spraying is the fact that the water itself keeps the pump cool. When the trigger on the wand is NOT pulled- no fresh cool water is flowing so the pump will get too hot and can cause pump damage. I never go 2min on my machine. 1min is about my max. If I'm doing something else- I will go over and pull the trigger for a few seconds to get new cool water in the pump, then continue with my task. I repeat as needed. If my task ends up taking too long- I shut the machine down. Please read my other reply's to comments/questions on the video. I believe I have one related to how I prepare the machine for storage. This will greatly prolong the life of your machine- in my opinion. There may also be other beneficial information in the comments section as well. If you haven't done your first "session" yet- you're going to be looking at anything and everything to hit it with....lol. Final thought aside from my standard "Good Luck"- be careful as this thing is extremely powerful and can (slash that, WILL) cause damage to your surfaces if you're not careful. Play with it and feedback with your thoughts. I'd like to know. Take care, G.

Hello! I’m considering the Northstar 3300 PSI and 2.5 gpm. This is my first time purchasing a PW and I’m new to starting a business. I’m also looking at a telescopic wand as well. Should this PW get the job done for 2nd/3rd story homes/ Alsp, I’ll be getting 100 ft of additional hose. Would you recommend this product ?

I have the 4000 psi model with the gx390 honda motor and CAT pump, for about 7 years. Amazing pressure washer. Never had a problems with it running, except one time I had to flush out the gas tank after winter storage, very easy you could figure it out. One thing to be careful of is when you are using it don't drop the wand on the ground while pressurized, I did and it cracked right after the first fitting. As long as you take care of it, you will be very happy.

I actually looked into the one you have, Randy. When I got to the store I was surprised how big that machine was. I went one step down from yours mainly due to the $400 difference. I had enough of a struggle coughing out what I did, but am very glad I did. Good tip on the wand. It's good to hear yours has worked out for so many years. That's another reason I went with this brand. They seem to hold up really well. They have very few complaints, and most are trivial in my opinion. I'm finding myself looking for anything else I can clean with it...lol. Thanks, G.

Excellent review! Saw this unit in the Northern sale catalog for $949 & found your review today. The reason why companies ship the engines without oil, is a safety concern required by the trucking companies, UPS, FedEx included. If the filler cap was to come off in transit and leak out, it could potentially be a fire hazard, damage other freight & then the EPA gets involved if if leaks out of the trailer.
@ghostses8 жыл бұрын
Thanks James! I agree with shipping engines with the oil in them- and the potential liabilities. What I was referring to was to include a bottle of oil in the box- not in the engine. Either way, it's a great product. Take care, G.

I enjoyed you review. I found a good deal on a Simpson PS 4033. It is 4000psi 3.3gpm. It has the Honda GX270 engine and a AAA triplex pump with bypass and thermal protection. The pump isn't as nice as the CAT but for occasional residential use should give good service. The retail price on the machine was about the same as your unit. I lucked out and found my machine as an on-line return, new in box for $500 in the clearance section of my Sams Club. I found they make whats called a 2nd story tip. Its designed to reach two stories up with lower pressure so you can use your chemical and shoot to the top eaves. Very useful for soft washing your house siding.

One of your Best Reviews G! Thanks for all the details and thoughts on this $1k+ purchase. Those Honda motors are excellent in my opinion and built like watches...quiet, strong work horses and easy to get parts for if necessary. The pump info you gave was really helpful detail to look for in a near commercial grade unit. That spinner nozzle rocks and seemed to make short work of tough stuff. Definitely worth the duckets. Thanks for helping others make informed decisions with your knowledge and wherewithal.

Thanks PJ! It was a big pill to swallow, but I'm past it now since using it. It's one mean machine and worth every hard earned penny! This is my first machine that sports a Honda and I already have the same sentiments you do. Near commercial is exactly what I was going for- and do believe I found it. Commercial was too much in both money and what I needed. I agree, the nozzle rocks. It's super fast and effective, which should reduce time and money- I'm always about reducing both. I did find it odd there were no real reviews on these washers. They're such a great product I would've expected them to be everywhere. Take care, G.

Good video. I have an older Excel ZR2800 with a Honda engine (GX200 I believe.). I bought it rebuilt at HD back around 2005. Had a smaller one for about 2 years before the pump froze one winter. Learned a lesson about winterizing. In fact, I run a pump protectant and winterization after each use unless I know I'll be using it again in a few days. I have a pretty big drive way and wash it and my neighbor's ajoining drive every couple of years. I got a flat surface attachment (15in ez clean for $70) at HD that does a real good job on flat surfaces. The attachment along with an extension really helps my back on these long jobs. I use a turbo nozzle for the edges.
@ghostses10 жыл бұрын
Thanks Gary! I believe you hit on a great point with winterizing. 2005 till now and yours is still working is great- is great! I do believe that's why so many don't make it for years on end. Regardless of the time of year I remove all hoses etc. and use compressed air to blow out everything on mine. I learned my lesson on an airless sprayer I failed to treat properly- and at a good expense to say the least. I treat my new airless the same way as my PW and they just work every time I want to use them! Thanks for the info on the attachment. I've looked at others that were more in the commercial realm and couldn't/cant justify the expense for one. I will pick one up if I have the need to clean a larger area. Take care, G.
@gary3175310 жыл бұрын
***** I'm sure the ez clean would not hold up very long in commercial use. I've used it on my drive and my neighbor's three times, along with side walks. Another neighbor borrowed it last summer. Also, used it a few times at my daughter's condo court yard and drive. Still holding up well, but I'm not sure how durable the brush skirt is. It's replaceable but not sure of cost.

@ghostses6 жыл бұрын
Just like day one Brian! It doesn't see hardcore use, but it fires up every time and simply works. There are things I do though which I'm sure helps for longevity. First, I shut off the fuel and let it run till it dies with the water still attached. Then I disconnect the water hose, hose and wand. The hose, wand, as well as the pump get blown out with compressed air. That's how I always store it. It's a nice bit of cash, but still think it's worth every penny. If you do bite the bullet- let me know what you think after you use it a bit. Take care, G.

This was an awesome review!!! Wow. I think this was your best video yet. Not saying that any of your other videos are bad. Just a few days ago I replaced the wand on our pressure washer. It's an old Troy built 1500 psi. Now we're not getting hardly any pressure. I have no idea why it's doing that. Hopefully the pump didn't just go. It ran really strong before. Do you have any ideas what it could be? Maybe there's something in the line? I had to take out the valve that regulates the pressure so I could get the old hose connection off. It had rusted itself on the pump. They use a partial steel pipe. The pressure valve I turned it in the whole way in and out and it doesn't change anything. I don't know what to do. I've been looking at a ryobi pressure washer to get if this one doesn't work out.
@ghostses10 жыл бұрын
Thanks Man! I'm no pro with pressure washers- but to me it sounds like your unloader valve is stuck (maybe rusted shut), worn out, or has trash in it. It should be part of the regulator you mention. I would guess rusted since you mentioned rust. When you are not pulling the trigger, it will go into bypass mode. When you pull the trigger, the valve will open and let the water go out of the wand. Again, it sounds like the valve is stuck shut so it's always in bypass mode. One thing you could try before taking it apart is to turn it on without a tip and cycle the trigger several times to try and un-stick the valve. Then put on the tip to see if you get good pressure. If so- the valve was stuck/sticking. That might be all you need to do, or you might need to take it apart and clean things up if that's possible- or get a replacement if you can find one. That's what I think, but again I'm no pro. Let me know what you find out, G.
@Lanninglongarmmowing10 жыл бұрын
I have taken the valve out and it seems to be working. Theres a ton of pressure that is built up in the hose. The engine idles down because its working a lot to keep the pressure. When I release the pressure by squeezing the trigger, theres a huge release of pressure and then it trickels with no pressure. I don't think the pump is bad because then there wouldn't be a lot pressure. We're taking it to a repair man in the next few days maybe. I don't know what went wrong. It might be that valve like you said.
@ghostses10 жыл бұрын
Love2boat92 Yeah, it does sound like the bypass valve is stuck or malfunctioning. I'm not sure on your washer if it's part of the regulator or not- it is on mine. It might be located somewhere else. Hopefully it can be fixed cheaply. Good luck, G
@Lanninglongarmmowing10 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I took it to our repair man today, and he said that for a new pump it would cost more than the pressure washer is worth and its probably not worth putting much money into if we could even find parts for it, so I don't think were going to put more money into it. I've been looking at one from harbor freight. Its their 2500 psi and 212 cc model. Looks like a decent pressure washer. I like those honda clone engines. Do you or anyone you know have any experience with that pressure washer?? Its definitely a few steps up from the one we had. I love how big the gas tank is. We also were looking into an electric washer, but theres too many cords to drag around and they usually don't generate enough of pressure.
@ghostses10 жыл бұрын
Love2boat92 Send me the model number of your washer. I want to look up the parts breakdown. I don't know anyone with the 2500 HF washer, but it looks like a pretty nice machine and gets good reviews. With a 25% coupon, and since it's currently on sale, you could pick one up for about $262 plus tax. It should put out about 2200 PSI at the nozzle. The GPM's are good as well, so it should clean fast. The only thing I don't like is the 25' hose- but that's no big deal. I'm spoiled now with mine being 50' but already want to add 100 more feet....lol. If you're old washer was rated at 1700, you were probably only getting about 1400 PSI out of it. I would stay away from the electrics for just the reason you stated. G.

I have been looking for a pressure washer. Seems like the CAT pump and Honda motors are prized. But they are expensive. I am conflicted between this model and the Harbor Freights Predator 4000psi for $1099.00. It has a predator engine (supposedly made in china) and a Annovi Reverberi triplex pump, again made in china. The reviews are good mostly so it seems to hold up.

Yes, that combo is prized for sure- they just work. The Predator engines are basically a Honda clone. I'm not familiar with that triplex pump so I have no comment on them. i cannot, for the life of me, figure out why northern tool is (as of about two years ago) selling all of their power/pressure washers with the male end of the high pressure hose's 3/8" quick connect on the pump. the way i have always plumbed my units is to have the female end on the pump which will in turn give me the male end on my wand....which gets thrown around a lot....a 3/8" female quick connect is about twice as much as it's mate, so i would assume this is why northern is plumbing their units (and yours) this way. if anyone else can shed some light on this, i would really appreciate it

Great review G. Why did you need one so expensive? Just curious. Roland
@ghostses10 жыл бұрын
Thanks Roland. That's a good question and has several reasons. I wanted one with the cat pump so I could work on it easily and cheaply. The cat pump makes them more expensive by default. I also wanted a high psi and gpm so I could clean fast, and from far if I needed to. I'm getting ready to paint the siding I put on my three structures and needed to clean everything. Down the road, I will be using it for other properties I will purchase- cleaning drives, decks, fences, buildings, etc. This brand seems to be really reliable and work for years without problems if taken care of- but they do cost quite a bit. So It's kind of a pay me now or pay me later situation. If it were just going to be used around the house, it might be a little overkill for the money but my plans go beyond that and it will see much use. That's the short answer...lol. @ghostses10 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the post Allen. I took a look at the manual and it does make a note about trying to alter the "maximum" pressure of the unloader valve and doing so would void the warranty. Turning the adjustment knob is OK to do. Lowering the idle would also reduce the pressure as well, and may even save on fuel. Take care, G. This is the complete text from the manual. "Do not attempt to alter the unloader valve's maximum pressure. Excess pressure could cause serious injury from escaping highpressure fluids and/or pump damage. Any alteration other than turning the adjustment knob will void your warranty."

is this pressure washer safe for washing cars/trucks/boats? i'm thinking about getting one and found out this brand seems to have good ratings.
@ghostses9 жыл бұрын
hltsolo I did quite a bit of research myself and I too found them to be highly rated. I don't regret a single penny of my purchase! It is safe for washing vehicles, but the pressure needs to be turned down or you can do come damage with it. If that's all you plan on using it for, you might check out some of their other models that have smaller pressure ratings and save some cash. This model I've linked to caps at 3000PSI with 2.5 GPM and has a CAT pump on it. It seems to be the most inexpensive one with a CAT pump. I would look into this one over mine and save a couple of hundred. They have others for less without the CAT pump as well but I can't speak about them. If money isn't the object, I would go with a CAT pumped model. When I clean vehicles, etc. I turn the pressure down on mine to about 1700-2000 PSI and run a fairly wide tip. Hope this helps and good luck, G. www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200594736_200594736 I recommend picking one of these up as well so you know how much pressure you're producing! www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_47632_47632

Once you get one, please feedback after using it and let me know what you think. If I'm not mistaken, you would be the second on my video to give an opinion of this model- mine being the first. I'm glad you liked the video and found it helpful. Take care, G.

Nothstar pads their reviews. They only let a few minor negative reviews to their website. They're on facebook so go there for honest reviews.

Thanks for the tip Randy! I'm fairly confident padding reviews seems to be the new norm for many things and companies. With that being said, I'm still completely satisfied with this washer. Take care, G.

That pump has 2 venturi points for chemical injector i hace a machine and im trying to make foam what injector to use one is black plastic tip that says "therm. " the other one is metallic says "chem." i did prove with metallic one and nothing no suction..

I don't know. Mine has the pickup hose attached to the top port. The one on the side with the black plastic is for letting water out if it gets too hot. To get it to pickup soaps, you have to use the low pressure black nozzle. Good luck, G.

I had problems with my cat pump , must got a lemon, only use it twice and the unloader stop working, junked it and replaced it, and yes cats are serviceable but very expensive , I took it apart three times and didn’t see anything wrong, no telling what a service place would’ve charged so I just replaced it with a ar viper. I’ve heard all kinds of problems about that style pump and people keep carrying them back and wasting time and money so I just replaced it, I like the unloader on the viper better anyway, it’s separated from the manifold

I can't speak to that type of problem. Mine's been working great for years now. Glad you found a solution you're satisfied with. Take care, G.
