The tunnel loses it's claim as the worlds deepest undersea road tunnel next year when "Ryfast" opens from Stavanger under Gandsfjord (this will also be the worlds longest subsea road tunnel on opening, 14.3km longest tunnel section and 290m depth) but that will again be passed when "Rogfast" opens a few years later.

One thing I don't understand though, is why they didn't make this tunnel 3 lanes. Like the Bømlafjord tunnel, which is Norway's ( and the world's) second deepest, at 263 m. That one has one lane inbound, while two outbound, letting people overtake slow moving trucks, etc.
@ExorFILMS7 жыл бұрын
This one has that too, the other direction.
@Glenni91N7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but only in one. Bømlafjord tunnel is pretty much 3 all the way.
@stuinNorway6 жыл бұрын
It will depend on the expected traffic flow. If the flow is sufficiently low that overtaking using the oncoming lane is safe, then the 3rd lane simply adds cost with little extra benefit. I'll agree it's preferable, but adds a huge amount on cost if not needed.
@Noi5ee6 жыл бұрын
Overtaking a truck in the oncoming lane on a 8% grade uphill with the typical norwegian car/engine combo (1,6 115hk diesel on a 1,6ton station wagon) is not safe regardless of traffic amount IMO. Its just typical penny pinching from Vegvesen and politicians , same reason why we still don't have a decent road connecting any cities, and tons of stupid compromises done in road constructions, like 2 lane roads with center divider but no overtaking lane for 10-15 or more km, motorway exits where the right most lane suddenly becomes the exit (incentivizeing left lane hogging), etc..

Is it true that they build this kind of tunnels so the bridges wont screw the beautiful landscape.
@EuropeanRoads7 жыл бұрын
The fjords are very deep so bridges are often not an option, or very expensive. In this case the minimum span needed would be longer than the world's longest suspension bridge. As you can see the 1 billion NOK / $ 120 million figure is quite low for this tunnel and the other tunnels and bridge on this link.
@Glenni91N7 жыл бұрын
We're trying to plan for crossings such as the Sognefjord crossing, which will be well over, 3 km wide, if we can build a bridge, we'll build a bridge, if we can build a tunnel, we can build a tunnel, but it'll have to be floating and anchored. the sognefjord is well over 900m deep. We don't even know how deep some of the other fjords are. That's the kind of mysteries we need to deal with in Norway.
@konradjozef93057 жыл бұрын
Sognefjord is 1000 meters deep and 4 km wide. A suspension bridge would need 500 meters tall towers (or more), more than twice that of the Golden Gate.

€12000 per meter is the average for Norwegian tunnels. This one was slightly tougher at €13750, still 1.5% below budget. Reason why we can be sure is because the whole project went though an evaluation after the fact using OECD standard of measurement. The conclusion was a very successful project where business between the regions connected by the tunnel increased by 20%. It has paid itself many times already. They hope to achieve the same making E39 ferry free from Kristiansand to Trondheim. A project with a budget of €40bn. Take a look at this if you haven't already: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fnS3Xnmrp6uJgrM

IS it my impression of even the excavated rest areas in the tunnel don't have a fire/smoke safe room?
@Glenni91N7 жыл бұрын
They do usually contain small fire safe rooms, with an emergency telephone, bu they're not very big, and they usually don't lead to any escape routes.
@stuinNorway6 жыл бұрын
Escape routes under a fjord might be a challenge . . open the hatch and flood the tunnel . . well it would put out any fire I guess.
@Noi5ee6 жыл бұрын
AFAIK if this where build today they would make it a dual tube with escape tunnels connecting them every so many meters. Norwegian road administration did a lot of weird(sometimes dangerous) compromises when designing new roads until very recently, they have gotten much better in recent years i feel.
