the point of disappearing into a role is immersion. when audiences watch a movie, especially a stylistic one such as this, they're not supposed to be thinking about the actors. they're supposed to find it effortless to suspend disbelief without being taken out of it by an awkward and noticeable weakness in the performance. it's not like how the grinch stole christmas or a series of unfortunate events. it's an immersive, atmospheric dark period piece without a shred of inauthenticity. the criticism of being unable to recognize him is not appropriate as it's the intended effect. it can be a personal preference, but objectively it was the goal and it was achieved. so ultimately it's a phenomenal success

To question why one of the most well respected horror directors working today would be given a modest budget is insane considering his track record. While we know film making is a business, I fear you often underplay the artistic side of making movies that is alive and well in all of Eggers films. And what a strange criticism of Bill being too into his role as a monstrous vampire. I admire you so much grace and have been a follower and supporter for over a decade, but these takes are so far off base. Glad you enjoyed the film though. I cannot wait to be immersed in this world on Christmas!
@GoMulanGo8 күн бұрын
She had wild critiques. I hate how vehemently she sticks to the money side of Hollywood and doesn’t let it go as is ppl like Snyder have failed critically and commercially again and again and are still given huge budgets. Eggers films are critically lauded and is clearly a hot talent. Not to mention 2/3 of his last films were indie.
@b0ywonder7 күн бұрын
@ agreed. Still absolutely love her work and respect her point of view on the industry as a whole, but I find there is often a lack of a more nuanced take on certain niches of filmmaking. Then again she has always said she comes from a mainstream, broad appeal pov. Still hope she learns to appreciate those nuances tho.

Ah okay so Bill skarsgaard should’ve been more shit so that you could tell that it was him rather than Bill giving a sensational performance that you just see count orlock instead of Bill. I understand you’re concerned about a films box office but why make it worse for the sake of money?

I think the greatest acting is when, who the actor is, becomes completely lost in the character. Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher comes to mind. It's like listening to a concerto and being completely absorbed in the music. Rather than the soloist making it all about themselves. We all appreciate performance at these highest levels, but a performer with the confidence and humility to not need to remind they are there, is pretty rare.

Yeah, Robert Eggers has such a knack for hauntingly atmospheric, fascinating existentialist movies that cross genre borders and blur the lines between dark social drama, historical costume piece, psychological character study, and uncanny mythological horror. Eggers' eerie tales can be interpreted on various levels: as reflecting on the soul, on society, on superstition, on the supernatural. These topical facets and narrative perspectives will twist and turn, flicker and fluctuate. Exploring his stories' themes caleidoscopically through such fragmentory lenses, individual soul, societal mores, superstitious beliefs, supernatural symbolism, Robert Eggers shines a different light on this enmeshing and entangled, intricately interwoven and fragile fabric we call reality. Be it the trauma and terror of "The Northman" in ancient/medieval warrior culture, be it the collective psychosis of religious fanaticism and incendiary moral panic in the trial of "The Witch", or be it a drunken descent into dementia and hostile hospitalism amidst suspicion, superstition and a surging sea in "The Lighthouse"... - ... these stories are as unreliable as they are uncanny, and yet they grant us truthful glimpses of deeply human deeds, haunting dreams and dreadful delusions. This is sublime horror, emotional, cerebral, artistic. As, also, a fan of both, Murnau's harrowing original black-and-white silent movie and Herzog's pale coloured talking picture remake: I can hardly wait for Eggers' take on "Nosferatu".
