I still remember enjoying this film when I was younger. Thankfully, now a days I've gotten smarter and know how dumb it is. I never even knew about the cartoon until later. In fact, I actually still remember watching the "second" film and being confused. I kept asking questions like, "Why aren't we seeing Claw's face?", and "Why is Gadget not doing much?" The first question was more prominent than the latter though, and even though I was confused, I still remember having fun with both movies. Hilariously and ironically, it was at the end credits when the music would play. Being a huge fan of music that I am/was, I can still remember dancing like a nut to the end songs. So, at least I have those childhood memories from the movies.

You know what was one of the best cartoons that i feel took kids seriously? Code Name: Kids Next Door. That show was awesome, it developed a fairly interesting lore by the end and it felt a good bit like a real childhood, obviously pushed to extremes, but you pretended that sort of stuff all the time, the adults are coming to get you, the teenagers are evil, a bra must be some kind of special battle armor, Battle Ready Armor you might say, and your ketchup gun can actually fend off Candy Pirates. I feel like theres a massive area of good cartoons like The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy and stuff like that and the NC never saw any of those.

0:44 In the cartoon they never explicitly say that he's a cyborg or a robot. In like episode 2 or so there is the inventor, but Penny only says "isn't he the doctor who *gave you all your gadgets*?" without specifying how or why. They never even say that the gadgets really attached to his body, in fact I believe he's never seen using them when he has different clothes. Of course his neck stretches and his teeths fly off in a couple episodes, but you can make a slim argument of saying that it's just cartoon logic, and he can't really do all that without his gadgets. Of course he's confirmed to be a cyborg in secondary works where he was dismembered, such as the 3D animated movie or the cameo in the Super Mario Bros. Super Show, but none of these is canon to the main story. Only in the trading cards (and/or maybe the action figures or other promotional material) they say that he slipped on a banana peel and fell down the stairs, so his body was "repaired" with all the gadgets, but the status of these as canon is highly debatable. On the other hand in a flashback we see Gadget as a baby and he already has a gadget hand in his hat (also the spin-off Gadget Boy has all the gadgets as a kid, but it was never confirmed that this is a young Inspector Gadget, except in the educational series Inspector Gadget's Field Trip, where the Inspector transforms into Gadget Boy using the fountain of youth, but again this might not be canon); this would mean that he either was born with gadgets (he's a robot), or had them at a very young age, which seems awkward. Another noteworthy thing is that at the end of season 2 we see some of Gadget's ancestors, and they too have gadgets. This partially debunks the robot theory (they could still be "ancestors" if they're previous versions of the robot), but kind of go against the cyborg theory, since it would be an absurd coincidence that all people in his family had anm accident and got turned into cyborgs. At this point the most likely theory seems that in his family they are all obsessed with gadgets and wear them (if you think about it, even Penny kinda does), so Inspector Gadget always did too, but then as an adult he was turned into a cyborg and had the gadgets (at least some of them) attached to his body. Bottom line, the show never explored his backstory, so the movie shouldn't either.

+KrossoverGod Oh, about the mustache, yes, it's because at the time he was a parody of Clusoe, but looking too much alike they removed the mustache in subsequent episodes. However I believe in some official episode descriptions they say for the first episode that he's "undercover" in the Alps, or something like that, so we can assume that the in-universe explanation is that he's wearing them as a disguise.

I really don't hate this movie to be honest, it might be a partial nostalgia thing, but my first exposure to inspector gadget was this movie, so whenever i see the show i've honestly come to hate it, Gadget was too stupid in that show. It gets on my nerves, I like that he's at least of average intelligence and actually saves the day in the film. I can see why some people don't like it, but for me it was a nuce little experiment to try something different that just didn't click with everyone. Besides, the sequel tried to be closer to the show, and that movie as much worse.

@AlexThe1Menace9 жыл бұрын
Same actually. I also saw the movie first and while I do respect the show (Dr. Claw is cool and the theme song is STILL one of the best themes to anything) it is very formulaic and not necessarily in a endearing sort of way like the original Scooby Doo. There was better stuff out there at the time. Anyways, yeah the movie definitely has problems with its plot and editing (which is understandable if you realize Disney actually cut out over 40 MINUTES of content which explains a lot) and more but it does have some pros. Gadget is actually a well meaning but naive nice guy as opposed to an arrogant idiot that they tried to do in the sequel with French Stewart. The practical effects done by Stan Winston are great, the soundtrack by John Debney is nice, the cinematography is pleasant, and it actually tried to give Gadget a backstory that parallels RoboCop. It could've been better but I certainly hold a soft spot for it and don't think it's one of the worst movies ever.

Either way, loved that show back then. For the heck of it, I should go look for an ep to watch. It's been years. That aside, I've never seen this film, only your review on it. I think the trailer turned me off from it. I went to the theater with my three younger cousins (15, 13, 10). My youngest cousin wanted to see Inspector Gadget. I didn't and neither did the other two, so we went to see the Blair Witch Project and he went to see Inspector Gadget by himself. After the movie let out, we were disappointed with the Blair Witch and our cousin really enjoyed Inspector Gadget and we were wondering if we should've just gone to see it instead.

When I was a kid, I remember watching Kids WB. During this time, I saw MANY trailers to films that I didn't want to see but now appeared on the Nostalgic Critic. Inspector Gadget, Son of the Mask, Cat in the Hat, Master of Disguise, Garfield, Daredevil, Ghostrider, Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer, The Haunted Mansion, Osmosis Jones, Planet of the Apes, Cats & Dogs (spoilers for next week's review) and others. If I was told, at the time, that these dumb movies (that I had no interest in seeing) would be the source of such joy many years later, I wouldn't have believed it. But it's good to know that I had at least decent taste even as a kid. LOL

I will admit, even in Ferris Bueller, Broderick was the weakest thing in that movie. The director was David Kellogg, who also did Cool as Ice, numerous Playboy documentaries and a Lionel Richie collection. huh.
@leonardosomma41966 ай бұрын
My dad actually did meet Matthew Broderick once. He used to drive people to and from the airport back in Italy and once drove Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker, saying that Parker was very bubbly and that Broderick stayed very quiet.

As somebody who grew up with the original show, albeit on VHS in the mid to late 90s, and somebody who was stoked to see the film in the cinema, I remember vividly the disappointment I felt as a child wondering what they had done to one of my favourite shows.

Gadget was Penny s father... But after a horrid accident during duty... He was rebuilt. Penny now helps to make him live his dream. There. Sad. Dramatic. And potentially action heavy... In two lines I wrote a better script. One I thought of as child already.

@MythicSuns8 жыл бұрын
even in the gaming world they use an uncle instead of a father, they did this in Watch_Dogs as well, say what you want about the game but it did a good job avoiding 2 major cliches, the first being that all games/movies seem to be set in either New York or LA (Watch_Dogs is set in chicago instead) and the 2nd being that the main character has a son or daughter who plays a major part in the story (Aiden is an uncle in this game)

@Lawlaliet8 жыл бұрын
+Bastion Valehart Honestly, I'd say the bigger middle finger of the newer show is that instead of making Gadget and Penny work together as this great team, they make Gadget into this egotistical asshole. An correct me if I'm wrong, but that's not how Gadget was in the original show, he was a goofball and sometimes oblivious. But, he never came off as a glory hog or egotist, infact most of the time he took the credit because he had no other choice, not because he wanted it.

Just gonna come out and say it - in terms of adaptations of classic and beloved cartoons, this is worse than The Last Airbender. Yes, I went there. As hard as it is to believe, there are people out there who can outsuck Shyamalan. And that's terrifying.
@ErzengelDesLichtes9 жыл бұрын
+D Vass Oh, there are definitely people who can out-suck Shyamalan. The thing is, no one ever said David Kellogg was a great director who was going to do great things. He never had a Sixth Sense. His credits are Inspector Gadget, Cool as Ice, and a whole lot of Playboy "Video documentaries" (Is that an IMDB euphemism?). You kinda expect him to be terrible. It's so much worse when someone *had* a shot at greatness, but ends up being bad.
@andrewheaney48749 жыл бұрын

+D Vass well her is the thing, Inspector gadget was a well loved animated show. But not nearly as loved as avatar the last airbender, so As an adaptation avatar is worst. As movie though... at least the effect in The last Borebender were decent.
@andrewheaney48749 жыл бұрын
pipo berber It doesn't matter how well loved the show is. What does matter is how accurate you are to the show, and how much effort you put into the film. I'm sorry, but I think Inspector Gadget did much worse on both fronts than Airbender.

say what you will about the live action IG, but I still kind of liked it, yes I did notice the differences and things that were distracting, but you know what? I DIDN'T CARE, and I still don't care, still better than watching the sequel. And it's still also better than watching the disappointing Netflix reboot, besides it could be worse, they could have included Corporal Capeman in the live action movie, but they didn't

it was actually both American and Canadian (and animated in Japan), so i believe the English and the french recordings were done at the same time. i have heard about the french lyrics, i never understood why it was never translated to English and used as the main theme.

Robert Walker I just said Talon was annoying as hell, maybe if Claw still had his old agents.....look the first chance I get I'll give it another try (I think my problem was I had to sit through Teletoons annoying Program Jockey's before the show started) but I'm not sure if Teletoon is still showing the reboot (and before you ask, Teletoon is the Canadian equivalent of Cartoon Network before Cartoon Network finally came to Canada in 2012) Did you watch an episode of the reboot after you filmed this?
@robbiewalker28319 жыл бұрын
iHeartRyanStiles First of all, I'm not Doug Walker's brother. Why does every body keep saying that! Second, at least Gadget does something to get the credit so that Penny doesn't feel like a Mary Sue. Third, the split-ups seem understandable compared to the original, because in the reboot, Penny is a teenager, and an agent in training.

This is one of the few times I can agree completely...the movie sucked and the cartoon was soooooooo much better. you can NOT make a GOOD live action adaptation of a cartoon. history has proven this time and again. and only very rarely can you make a good live action comic book movie, basically you have the avengers and pretty soon the deadpool movie, and that's about it for good comic book movies.
@shoresean12379 жыл бұрын
I blame an odd suspect for the trend of totally changed adaptations : The Bixby/Ferrigno Hulk series. Because the sort of changes all these adaptations enact were done correctly and wisely with that one, lesser lights started changing things all over the map.
