+dragonkeeper19600 This really underlines to me how poorly they thought this out and how the movie doesn't in any way acknowledge what was wrong with the scenario. Imagine this as a cop scenario or something. Timmy is a standard investigator who gets a bunch of praise or has a big reputation to the city. Some criminal wants to one-up the face of the law, so he starts kidnapping and torturing people. Timmy has no idea what to do with a case like this, so another detective (Jenny) comes on to work with him on the case. Ultimately, Jenny puts the pieces together and they get the hostages out, while the only role Timmy has is bringing the perp in instead of leaving him for dead when the building collapses or something. Timmy then gets the press stories and such. It's not Timmy's fault that this started, but he didn't have an active role in what actually resolved the conflict, and the actual heroine has her more important contributions glossed over.

You know the funny thing is. Despite them raising and praising Timmy as some sort of Messiah, HE STILL DID NOTHING. If you look closely it was Jenny who stopped his brother not him. He just stood there like an idiot, and yet he is being praised for it. Yeah lets teach our children that women can't be praised as heroes (like Mrs.Brisby and Jenny) despite actually doing work and that when you are held to high expectations do nothing and you still get a reward.

Fun fact: Don Bluth himself actually once mentioned in an interview that if he had the chance to create a sequel to Secret of Nimh, MARTIN would've been the protagonist. And the antagonist? TIMMY. Makes one wonder how such a movie would've been carried out. Though since it's Bluth, it would definitely have been better than this piece of crap. =w='b

Kazechi Yumigami I wonder. Does these animators just get to make a movie with budget then some big company takes it and do whatever they want with it? i'm having second thoughts about becoming a game programmer if some company is gonna first take my idea and change everything then take it and make dlc and sequels that doesn't have with the original twisted shit in the first place.
@maskedblanks77749 жыл бұрын
magnusm4 I think it all depends on the company's staff and who you work with. Don Bluth created Secret of NIMH with his own company, Don Bluth Productions, but because the film didn't do well in the box office despite having critical acclaim (due to parents thinking it's too scary for children), Don Bluth Productions filed for bankruptcy. Bluth's next hit movies were An American Tale and The Land Before Time - he collaborated with Steven Spielberg. However, he broke with Spielberg before All Dogs Go to Heaven, which did pretty well. Sadly, Bluth's next films: Rock-a-Doodle, Thumbelina, A Troll in Central Park, and The Pebble and the Penguin didn't do well. Don Bluth then went to Fox Animation Studios, and came with Anastasia. Sadly, the studio closed after Bluth's film, Titan A.E, was also a failure. Likewise, Disney did have issues before with staffing after the death of Frank Wells where Michael Eisner and Jeffrey Katzenberg started to argue - leading Katzenberg to form Dreamworks, and Eisner getting replaced after he insulted Steve Jobs and his Pixar studio by claiming Finding Nemo wasn't going to be a success. Secret of Nimh 2: Timmy to the Rescue is a direct-to-video sequel, so I'm unsure how it was able to get some rights to showing Don Bluth's film on their's, though I'll assume it's because they have a lot of money. I actually wanted to be a game artist before, but I realized that if you don't have the right people with you (i.e. a programmer, a level maker, a writer, a coder, a manager, a beta-tester, etc.), or you have no connections, you really won't get far unless you're extremely outstanding with your trade. Your worries are something that does happen, and is very frequent - especially if you're not the manager or head honcho, but if you're truly passionate and want to be a game programmer: why not try making your own business? Everything is really up to you, though - I am definitely not a career adviser, and I don't know about businesses in detail. I simply state what I know, though there are a lot of things I do not know, as well. ^^'
@magnusm49 жыл бұрын
Kazechi Yumigami the main thing is time and my passion wasn't awoken until my first year in high school just like my artistic passion. Spent the last 3 years working on programming and drawing but people at our school still got this passion ahead and so is better. It's awful being like me where you don't realize what you like until your supposed to learn it while others get it at a younger age and so start from there.
@maskedblanks77749 жыл бұрын
magnusm4 That's true, yet again as I mention before - it's not too late to start a business if you find others who'll be glad to be part of a team. You could also try freelancing to get some experience, and accepting commissions for people. When commissioning, don't ever start with a high price. If you truly love what you're doing, and are passionate about making a career from it, I don't think age should be a factor to hold you back. Don Bluth started his first studio at age 42. Despite setbacks, he still continues to do what he loves, and is now age 77. Just get out there, go hard, and always give it your best shot.

This movie could have been awesome if they had left out pretty much the entire first part- they could've had BOTH Martin and Timmy be sent for training, and while out in the forest Timmy could fall into a metal trap, with Martin figuring a way out only to be trapped himself. Martin then would be taken to NIMH while Timmy, full of guilt, tries to rally the others to join him in getting Martin back. But they're all afraid of NIMH and Timmy has to journey alone. He finally makes it to the city but can't find NIMH, until he runs into Jenny- a street-tough city mouse who has also lost friends to NIMH. They both make it to the lab only to find that Martin has gone insane and is rallying the other animals to revenge against humanity with... science-y stuff? Maybe they can all carry rabies, whatever. And then Timmy has to kill Martin to save the others. Or at least maims him. Whatever. The end!

@TXFDA9 жыл бұрын
Is it bad that I actually like the fact that out of nowhere, the brother is the bad guy this whole time? It's something you actually don't see coming, but does KINDA...SORTA...almost make sense considering all the shit at the early parts of the movie with everyone essentially saying he's not good enough and his brother is automatically better. Seems like a good reason for a villain. At least it's different than just generic bad guy. Also, serious question here. Can SOMEONE PLEASSSSE explain to me why cartoons show characters locked up, either in a cage, or a jail....but make the bars so goddamn far apart that the character could easily escape? I don't understand why it'd be so hard to draw the bars closer together so it doesn't look fucking ridiculous. Even modern cartoons do it still. Also, shitty movie or not, you still have to give props to the people doing the art and animation. Even if it's not quite up to the first movie's quality, it's still good. Drawing a character and background is hard enough, but add in having to animate that and damn. Hell, even the animation in the shittiest of movies that Doug's reviewed is at least decent enough to be passable. Animating isn't easy, and the fact that someone actually put in quite a bit of effort to at least make the movie LOOK good deserves some respect for them. Maybe not everyone, but at least the people doing the art and animation. Besides, the backgrounds in this are actually pretty damn nice in some places. (Keep in mind I'm talking about the 2D animation. Not any 3D animated movies. 3D animation is a whole separate deal.)
@BvousBrainSystems9 жыл бұрын
+TXF The only really lazy animation is poor 3D, and even then it takes a lot of manhours to make 90 minutes of it. As a learning artist, I have respect and interest even for the shittiest hand drawn animation, because I kind of see what it took to make it; however, animators are accomplished artists, I think they don't feel effort the same way that we do: they work way under their skill level, so they can quickly put out a great quantity of drawings that look hard to us but are actually easy for them. Kind of like if I was to draw a thousand stick figures: sure there's a lot of them, but it's easier than what I'm used to so it takes no effort.
@TXFDA9 жыл бұрын
BvousBrainSystems They feel effort the same way...but different. The thing is, as you said, their skill level needs to be considered. They have the same kind of problems every other artist has, just at a different skill level. Someone that does character animations for a living may have huge problems drawing backgrounds. People that do the backgrounds may not be able to draw people. No matter how good you get, things like anatomy, and hands can still be a problem. Plus a person's skill set is always growing. You may suck at something now, but in a few weeks or months, you might not be too bad at it. But then you'll have something else you need to get better at. And even professional payed artists are the same way. Always learning something new, or having trouble with certain things. I know someone personally that sells quite a bit of art and makes a decent amount of money at it, but they still have trouble creating backgrounds on traditional paper with markers and things. They're too used to Photoshop and being able to undo and erase/fix anything. Not to mention layers. Which is a fairly large problem for them when they get a booth at a convention and draw traditional art for money. But yeah, as for animation. No matter how shitty the animation, it still deserves SOME respect. Unless it's shitty flash tween animation..in which case even I could do that. But if it's like, properly drawn frame by frame animation and stuff, that shit 'aint easy. It's hard enough drawing a single frame and making it look right. Having to re-draw that same frame over and over again, but slightly different, and still keeping it consistent. And then doing that hundreds of times per show or movie. That's gotta be hard as fuck. I know I couldn't do it. Even if the animation is considered 'sub-par'.
@papershadow9 жыл бұрын
+TXF I think the big issue is that the focus was on Timmy the entire time not really doing anything. At least looking at what was included in the review, I didn't get resent out of Martin while speaking with Timmy. Maybe a bit of jealousy, but not the kind that would lead to outright evil behavior. It needed some other things in there to make the twist feel believable, like maybe Martin saying he's going to keep working himself as an offhand sort of playful remark when Timmy leaves. Take out the letter from Mrs. Brisby about him disappearing so you don't basically tell the audience "remember Martin is going to have a role somewhere", and it makes the twist feel a bit more organic.
@Lamelaff9 жыл бұрын
Sooo... Everything Mrs. Brisby did in the first movie was ignored, and Jenny was the one truly saving the day in this movie, but didn't get any credit at all. Sexist much?
@alexandresobreiramartins94619 жыл бұрын
+Lamelaff Just removing Mrs. Brisby from the original story in the retelling with the stupid prophecy and all already rated this damned movie as sexist for me. It seems they're pandering exclusively for boys, as Jenny, as you well pointed out, is ignored and they say that Jimmy saved Thorn Valley by himself. That's really disgusting, especially considering that in the original they made Mrs. Brisby into a regular housewife, so as to show that a regular person can overcome great obstacles through courage and strong will (both of which she has to spare). It's the same problem I have with the negative reactions Maleficent got. I don't get it! The "true love at first sight" between Sleeping Beauty and the Prince is as unrealistic as it can get. It works in a purely fairy tale environment because the purpose of the fairy tale is not saying that true love conquers all, but goes far deeper than that. The twist they put in the story was brilliant: even though some people might disagree with me, I do believe there's no truer love in the world than that of a loviong parent to her or his child.

You know they could've salvaged the Martin going insane story arc by having Martin blame Timmy for not rescuing him sooner and have Timmy explain that the pressure of being the hero was too much and that he was never meant to be the hero after all. You could've had this whole "Martin becoming the evil that tortured him to survive" sub plot, which would've made him more of a three dimensional character and have him die in the end since he was beyond redemption. The victory would've been bitter sweet for Timmy and we could end with him making some stoic speech about everyone who died because Man's evil or some shit.

Not to mention that, as you said, he was actually better at everything than Timmy (which is mentioned at the beginning of the movie), but he was still pushed away because his wimpy brother was actually chosen one or the like .And during all those years suffering though experiments and growing into a twisted maniac, he was actually able to outsmart the scientist and star his own ruling. Sure, having him look like Jeremy Irons in the Dungeons & Dragons movie might've been weird, and the movie itself isn't salvageable even with that. i think it would have been FINE to have timmy put on a pedestal with the whole prophecy business, it provides conflict for both timmy and martin. however, the problem is how they executed it. they treated it like ~timmy was in the wrong for not living up to everyone's expectations, when really, they were all in the wrong for putting so much pressure on him. even harry potter (which doug mentions) - one of the most famous 'the chosen one' stories - acknowledges the pressure and inner turmoil and sometimes over-confidence it causes in harry and that's part of why that series is so good. this film is like, nah, that's TOTALLY okay to do that to a child and it's their fault if they don't act accordingly, and timmy is glorified through the entire thing and ends it having done nothing and is worshiped all the more for it. the thing is, treating a kid like 'the chosen one' is fucked up, but it's completely okay to have this narrative as long as the movie acknowledges just how fucked up it is. and don't even get me started on this movie's treatment of mrs brisby. and all of the complexities and social commentary and the forlorn, dark tone of the first fil- you know what, im gonna end it there. it doesn't even need all those things to be a decent sequel, of course people would still complain but like... it only needed a decent story. that's it.

The only two non rats that talked in the previous flick were Jeremy and the Great Owl, but in this flick it looks like all animals can talk, understand the value of money, can make clothes, and do other human things. Did NIMH unleash something into the air that made more animals smart? Is this Rise of the Planet of the Apes? Although it doesn't seem to be all animals for some reason. Kinda weird for the first and second movie.

The evil brother plot twist seems pretty cool actually. The main character being worshipped before doing anything, not so much.

You know, seeing this review again, there are 2 other main characters they could have made a better story out of. - Martin as the unnoticed son, whether it's still his descent into madness or Bluth's proposed idea of Timmy being the villain. - Jenny. She escapes from NIMH without her parents and tries going to Thorn Valley to get help from the rats or this supposed Chosen one. She gets there, finds out he's not what he was built up to be (through no fault of his own admittedly), and decides with help or not, she has to be the one to save the others still trapped in NIMH. That's what gets me the most about this film, even without knowing the original (need to see it at some point): on top of sloppy and half-baked writing for the main plot, it had two other potentially great plot ideas that were completely ignored and honestly had more interesting personality and backstories despite being secondary at best in this story.

Funny how the only thing Critic has a problem with is the one thing about this move that I didn't mind. Martin being the villain was a great idea. Timmy's whole world has been turned upside-down. It's like something out of Star Wars. Having said that, they could have picked a better voice for the guy. And what's with the 3rd act introduction? The big bad should not be in less than half an hour of the movie.
@ilike2fly7110 жыл бұрын
but there is no set up or reason to have martin be the bad guy. It is like they drew that idea out of the hat

I feel like this film tried SO hard with such strong material that it came off as chaotic, rather than the powerful "coming of age" and "envy of stature" tropes it set up. Martin being better suited at first but Timmy getting all the glory for doing nothing is a perfect set-up. The village rats basically destroyed both of those children by placing the shackle of destiny on them from dual angles. Almost "the Prince and the Pauper" meets Star Wars. I can't bring myself to hate the film, but I truly wish they had been able to pull off the "Forged/Forced destiny" angle the way they wanted to. This movie had ALL the right puzzle pieces to be even greater than the original Secret of Nimh, but it fell short and dropped nearly all of them in the sloppy reveal/weak time passage and forced character interactions.
@DarthRushy11 жыл бұрын
Funny how they give extra credit to Timmy even though he's actually the ONLY person who didn't save Thorn Valley. I mean, Jenny came to warn them, Jeremy flew them there and back, Justin broke out the mice and organized the escape, Martin took down NIMH...

Visually speaking, Evil Martin is an evil version of Nicodemus. No mention of that huh? Martin being evil is a good twist, just not well-executed. They went with a comical insane instead of a more serious one. It's really not like Pinky and The Brain. The sequel wasn't butt-raped, it was strip-mined.

I've noticed a LOT of sequels to popular movies are always quickly hashed up to make a quick money grab. Atlantis 2 sucked ass, Ferngully 2 was worse and we already saw what happened with Secret of Nimh 2. There are some movies that don't need a sequel, no matter how much fans ask for it. It's always gonna turn out to be shit.
@SirBlackReeds9 жыл бұрын
+Matthew “Pizzarugi” Barker Milo's Return is a compilation film. It's composed of episodes for a rejected TV series. Also, Don Bluth and Gary Goldman once spoke of sequel ideas for Secret of NIMH. They mentioned making Martin the hero and Timmy the villan.

This movie must be on Ralph M.'s "bad movie" list because... wow. He's one of my favorite actors and this is just not what you would expect from him, I mean, he's freaking Ralph Macchio, the Karate Kid, Johnny Cade, so many things, and this is what happens when they make another one of these movies? It goes on his list of "this never happened so don't mention it" list, if that exists? Well I still love him as an actor and i'll just forgive him for this.

@EmilyGloeggler79847 жыл бұрын
You know the bit with Martin is actually sad when you consider the fact that he and other animals were experimented on by doctors and scientists. All of his evil deeds are partially the result of getting his brain fried through electroshock and gosh knows what other types of scientific/medical approved abuse. The sad thing that does happen in real life via the pseudoscience professions of psychology/psychiatry.
@filmfangirls91638 жыл бұрын
