This is the real Foreigner. Honestly, as lovely as that ballad is, the band normally played driving rockers. That said, it was also normal for bands to be able to play all sorts of different styles. It reflected the many different musical influences most musicians had. Honestly, why limit ourselves to be one dimensional?

Yes, it was. Their hard driving hits is what introduced me to them.

Without a doubt. Their first power ballad was Waiting For a Girl Like You which was on their 4th album and aptly named 4. I was stunned when I first heard it because that wasn't the Foreigner I fell in love with when their debut album was released during my senior year of high school. Even their drummer Dennis Elliott said IWTKWLI was a great tune but I don't know if we should've been the ones who released it since it changed the perception of the band. Foreigner wasn't Journey who were known for their slew of ballads.
@toddstevens132 жыл бұрын
@@hondaphan4172 They pulled a Journey, and $$$$ wise it proved successful, musicianship wise, that was when they started losing most of the original band members wasn't it. That is why I like the new configuration of Foreigner, they Rock the Hell out of it, with great Rock Musicians, but sadly have to throw in the Pablum, here and there.
@toddstevens132 жыл бұрын
@@hondaphan4172 Wasn't that about the time most of the original band left, when they became Pablum orientated. But like Journey there are millions of people with no Rock tastes that loved that stuff and made them $$$$'s.

@@toddstevens13 I'm not a hater when it comes to the new lineup..at least when talking about when they first came together in '05. I had just become weary and frustrated at watching Lou struggle at almost every single one of the twenty Foreigner shows I attended during the '99, '00, and '02 tours and I was open for a change. I've always loved Lou but it became difficult to watch. I saw the new lineup a handful of times(and really enjoyed them!) between '05-'07 but I got tired of hearing pretty much the same setlist show after show...at least after their '05 shows. At my two shows in '05 they played Headknocker and they nailed it....but I never heard it again. When I stopped going after '07 they were still playing Starrider and they also played Break It Up at one of my shows in '06. Now that Tom has retired and Mick is onstage very little, if at all, the thing just rubs me the wrong way and that's not including the greatest hits setlist which is stale as hell, IMO. I just feel if Mick can't be onstage for the bulk of the show then it's time to retire the great Foreigner franchise and ride into the sunset. I still can't believe they have nobody who can play sax after Tom retired. That's almost criminal in my mind.

Foreigner was not a band that did many ballads. They were good old fashioned ROCK N ROLL. Lou Gramm has a great voice. Saw them in concert at MSG in the late 70s. I may be wrong but I don't believe Lou tours with them anymore, I know he was dealing with a serious health issue. I don't think people appreciate what a great vocalist he is. Hope he is doing well. Listen to Juke Box Hero.

Lou hasn't been in the band since their '02 tour. The only exceptions were several years ago when they did some Reunion shows as all of the original members except bassist Ed Gagliardi (RIP) performed together again for a handful of tunes. Their second bass player Rick Wills took Ed's spot.

As a 20 something musician I hung out with blacks more than whites. I was a wild man with little self-control. They always referred to me as a "dirty white boy" in a joking way; and this was before the song came out. Also, many blacks would refer to whites that acted black or hung out with blacks as "dirty white boys". Another hit song by Foreigner was "Urgent". It was famous for its sax solo. That sax solo was played by Jr. Walker. Jr. Walker had a band called "Jr. Walker and The All Stars" and, when in Houston on "rehearsal tour" in 1982, my black friends introduced me to him at a club called "Ronnie B's". I'll never forget hanging out, all of them drinking slo-gin fizzes and my friends telling the band I was the dirtiest white boy they had ever met. One thing led to another and they allowed me to go on stage and play (lead guitar) "Urgent" with Jr. Walker and his band one night. One of the best nights of my life. Every time I hear "Dirty White Boy" or "Urgent" I think of that night. RIP Jr. Walker.

Banger! I was 13 when this song came out. That guitar sound is the dirtiest part of the song! Foreigner started off a hard rock band in the mid-seventies, with songs like "Cold As Ice", "Long, Long Way from Home", and "Starrider" before cranking things up a notch with "Hot Blooded" - a song that flashes one bitchin' Camaro of a guitar solo! "Double Vision" is another seventies banger from them. They perfected the power ballad in the eighties, at which point I lost interest.
