@danieldeanharrison There are a virtually endless myriad of sources...nit enough square footage to show ALL of them! Though that would be awesome...

Yes, in the early days of petroleum use they'd taste a small amount of the oil. The more Sulphur in the oil, the more sour it would taste.

I have a story.... I was in the oil fields in North Dakota and I watched as the guys on the rig pulled the pipes out the back flow of liquid chemicals being pumped in the ground completely. Doused drenched the guys on the rig. Toxic substances all over the area all over people that made me sick. I saw a thousand pound pipe fly into the air from the pressure of the rig and flop like a whip back and forth for about 10 seconds. Luckily nobody was in the way or they would have been dead. Those are your sweet stories from the oil. Rigs. The contamination of the earth, the dangers the workers faced. I didn't even work on the Riggs long and I saw that s..t.

Don't forget Southwest Wyoming Sweet, Great Basin Black Wax, Sigurd Sweet, and Tonipaw Vacuum Gas Oil. That VGO is really nasty, you have to sample it with Stainless Steel cans.

Fun fact. Most of the elemental sulfer in the US comes from the processing of crude oil when it is removed during the refining process. The sulfer is used to produce sulfuric acid and other products.

Because it's 1895 and how sour the oil tasted was a really easy way to determine the Sulphur content?

Now I want to go to a brewery...mmm... But seriously, don't taste petrochemicals. "Sour/Sweet is just how the industry describes sulphur content.
@PsRohrbaugh

While I agree nobody should be tasting oil, the Sulphur made the oil taste sour, so it was a reasonably accurate and quick way to assess the Sulphur content.

Yes! And this has major consequences for refining oil into other petroleum products. Switching from one source of crude to another can have major consequences on the price of gasoline and diesel vs other products.
