If you are experiencing a problem where not all the furnace burners are igniting or lighting, I got an easy fix you can try that will likely repair your problem. This problem usually involves one, two, or three burners that are failing to light. The flame comes on on the first burner or two but fails to carry on to the next ones. If you clean the burner orifices and the burners, this should take care of this problem. This video shows how to clean the orifices and here is the video where I show how to clean the burners:

*Many of the commenters here have obviously **_not payed attention_** while watching this video.* PAY ATTENTION FOLKS! I have an almost identical furnace to the one here. The burners were shutting down before they all had a chance to start firing. After it would make 3 attempts to start it would go into shut down mode with 2 flashes on the controller board LED. I have followed ALL of the advice given in the video. Furnace is now starting and running perfectly. THANK YOU!

Thank you, thank you thank you. I’m not afraid to tackle things I don’t know, except for electrical, and natural gas stuff. Furnace would not start yesterday. Your other video showed the flame sensor needing to be cleaned. Not to bad getting off, but a PAIN putting back in. I gave up on getting it started yesterday, after it still didn’t start. I figured out the flash code stuff today, and only had the first 2 burners firing. You explained what I needed to do. Simple enough with a paper clip. It fired right up. I was dreading a $200 service call. And this was definitely a DIY fix.

This video *almost* got me to my solution. I had already cleaned the flame sensor, checked the igniter, and checked the heat limit switch with a multimeter. It was the comment here about the wings on the burners that saved the day for me, which led me to Jay's video on cleaning the burners. This is at least the second time Jay's videos have saved me several hundred dollars in repairs, plus I get to learn cool and useful technical stuff too. Thank you so much!

Spent a few evenings watching troubleshooting videos, trying many things and this one was the first to actually explain and diagnose the issue I was seeing. Had a hvac guy tells me my inducer motor was bad, even though it fires up, and controller was bad. I reamed the manifold holes and presto magic, all 4 burners light. Your videos are extreamly well put together and you do annamazing job fully explaining things. Thank you again. Keep them coming.

As an Hvac contractor, I rarely see clogged orifices. Much more common are rusty burners. You need to remove the burners and clean with a wire brush. Sometimes the burners are so corroded they need to be replaced. Especially when running propane. Some manufacturers offer stainless steel burners for propane use.

thank you for the video!! i lost sleep over our furnace problem and you saved my headache!! My issue was that only one burner would fired up if the furnace cover is on. If i leave the cover out, all the burner would fired up!! Then i noticed the 2nd and 3rd burner’s flame is smaller than the 1st and 4th burner. So i suspected some holes are partial blocked. I used your wire tip to clean all the burner holes, and everything works again!!! thank you very much!!!

Wow, this was great! Very clear presentation and I realized the wings of my burners were corroded. In troubleshooting I found that the 1st burner would light but not the other 3 unless I blew gently on the 1st burner towards the other 3 when the flame was present. Maybe not SOP but it helped me realize the wings were probably the culprit. Cleaned the thermocouple while I had it accessible.

@@WordofAdviceTV I have tried everything I know but having issues after replacing igniter, flame sensor, run capacitor and tested all switches. The furnace gets to the igniter turning on then no flame and kicks off. Inducer is working, pressure switch works. Goes through this cycle 4-5x then goes into lockout mode. What am I missing and why is it not getting a flame?

Thanks for this. I have been trying to fix this issue for years. Every hvac techs just wants to throw away the unit and put in a new one. I have yet to find a company that knows what they are doing. The problem is not all burners light every time so it misses heat cycles and can get cold. If i use a torch i can light the burners manually and it runs that cycle fine. I used a piece of wire to clean the orifices. Then on the second attempt the burner lit. I am not sure if that is luck or what but i think you have lead me on the right path.

This is great! I just cleaned out the orifices on the gas manifold with a paperclip and that did the trick. Do you have any videos on replacing the inshot burners themselves? Mine are all corroded and I read it could cause a yellowing of the flame and overall deficiency in the ignition and operation of the furnace. I found the burners themselves on Amazon, but a video would be great. My burner housing is fairly corroded altogether. It would be great to replace the entire housing even.

The burners have wings that that are made up of a top and bottom and they are separated by a few thousandths of an inch. The burners are coupled together via these wings and it is through them that the gas propagates from one to the other lighting each burner along the way. If the wings develop rust or debris between the separations, it will stop the flow of gas and not be able to light the next burner in line. That is what happened to mine and I cleaned the wings out with a feeler gauge slid between the separations. All was well.

Thanks for the video step by step information 👍. I just have a question before I go ahead and do what you are saying in this video? If all of the burners aren't working and everything else is the igniter is glowing red hot like it's sapposed to all of the ventilation is good air flow is good filter is good lol and the fans are all running but the burners aren't lighting could that maybe be the problem? The very first igniter might be plugged up? I have a fairly new only 6 years old Armstrong furnace. I'm trouble shooting and it saying that the pressure switch closed with inducer off. I see no other reason for the burners not to light but maybe they are plugged. Please get back to me 🙏 I would really appreciate it. I've been trying to figure it out all day😡. how often should you clean the burners? Reason I ask I have a furnace boiler and I see rust particles accumulating in and around the boiler burners. They don't seem to effect the flame, so I let it be. Is it important to keep them absolutely clean? Good videos, hope you do one on washing machines!
@WordofAdviceTV
@WordofAdviceTV 5 жыл бұрын
As long as the rust and build-up does not impede the flames, it's all good. The mainstream HVAC suggestion would be to clean them every year or two, make some effort to brush them down and get them clean though so that your burners burn cleaner and you don't have any incomplete combustion which could raise your carbon monoxide emissions. If you have a long brush, it's pretty easy to clean up those burners. (if the ones you have are what I am thinking about anyway) I do work on washing machines but they are all different. Can't say I love working on them either heh. Maybe I'll make a top ten washer problems video down the road.

@David Delgado Oh darn.. So you ended up not going this semester. Sorry to hear about that! You were so excited for it.. But if you believe in God, then everything that happens, happens for a reason and in your best interests. That must mean that this semester was not the right time then. Thank you for the kind wishes and no worries about not answering right away! I get a lot of comments nowadays and don't respond to everyone so I definitely don't expect an answer from others every time as well. Anyway, with your attitude, I am sure you will succeed in whatever path you choose! May God bless you and your family as well brother! (Don't forget that it's not the talented that win, it's the persistent)

Great work as always. I have a carrier rtu with this issue. I cleaned. Even replaced manifold and orifices and still having issue. Incoming gas pressure 10 in.wc and 3.5 leaving valve and still intermittently having this issue. Any ideas. Replaced ignitor and flame sensor as well, but obviously no flame to sense on 2nd burner. 2 burner setup.any ideas.

Great video. You're a braver man than I, blocking the gas jets with your fingers! :-D But... I have a brand new RUUD 802V that is doing this from time to time. The outlet gas pressure tests good. The control board, gas valve and complete manifold/burner assembly have been replaced but no joy. Any ideas what might cause this?

Thank you! Have you tried cleaning the burners? I have a video on that if you need it. If they have clogged transition wings, that could cause some of the burners not to light as well.

@@WordofAdviceTV Thanks for the reply. They cleaned the original burners - not that they were dirty as the furnace was only a few weeks old - and even replaced the original burners. No joy. The tech was here again and managed to get the problem on a video which he sent to RUUD. The RUDD engineers said this had happened on "a few" furnaces and hand tested a new burner set for proper operation. The new burner set is scheduled to be installed tomorrow. So we shall see... Both the original and first replacement burners are going back to RUDD so they can figure out what happened. You can smell a bit of gas after the right burner lights up so I am thinking that, for whatever reason, the flame is not making its way down to the other burners. I'll let you know if they figure it out.

@@RogerPack Yes it was. RUDD sent us a new burner assembly they had hand checked to be in spec and that solved the problem. I sold that house in November 2021 but it was still working fine when we left.

This comment, in conjunction with this video, has helped me HUGE! Thank you Jay for the thorough explanations on all your furnace videos, and thanks Adam for the idea of using a paper clip. I tried a smaller pin a couple days ago, but unfortunately had no luck. I then pulled out the burners, cleaned the faces (as per Jay's recommendation), cleaned my flame sensor, used a multimeter to check my wiring and connections, still nothing. Went back to Jays videos to try to find more possible solutions, and saw this comment. Shoved a paperclip in as far as I could in the last burner (where the flame sensor is at the end of) and VOILA!!!! It all started from trying to replace my exhaust venting as it was improperly done (joints not sealed and had black stuff building up on them). Thought my new venting was initially the issue as I did not follow proper runs as per manufacturers specs. But in the end, it was just a coincidence that the orifice was plugged. Thanks again Jay and Adam!!

@@jasonkristik6886 Thanks for this video and Rick+J&K's comment about the paper clip. I also found some buildup that I cleaned with a paperclip and I also lined up the fin slit a little better all the way across and bingo, my furnace stopped randomly failing on the last burner light. Thanks!

In my case when only a couple burners were getting gas to them, I found there was power going to the gas valve but it was only allowing 0.5" WC natural gas to the manifold. Changed it out. Problem fixed.

I replaced both burners and seems better but flame still doesn't always spread to second burner on first attempt. I removed orifice on second burner and it is clean. What would you try next?

This video is very helpful but I do have one question: what if the gas is coming out but none of your burners light. I can smell the gas but the burners are not lighting at all.
@WordofAdviceTV

Is your ignitor glowing or sparking? If it is glowing but not lighting even thought the gas is coming out, then most likely that is a weak ignitor that should be replaced.

Hi Jay. Thanks so much for the videos! I'm having a slightly different burner not igniting issue I'm wondering if you've encountered. The problem I'm having is that sometimes that last one or two burners in line don't ignite. I have a Trane XV90 with 5 burners and the issue is intermittent. Sometimes all 5 light, sometime only 4 do. Sometimes the 5th one will work after one failed attempt, sometimes it fails three times in a row. Not sure what could be causing the problem where it works sometimes and not others. Would love any thoughts.

The valve regulator may be failing or your gas output pressure may need adjustment. You will need a manometer to measure water column out of your gas valve.
@jaredplemons6728
@jaredplemons6728 3 жыл бұрын
@@albertosimental4578 I was. The problem was with corrosion on the wings of the burner tubes - not allowing gas to pass through to the flame sensor fast enough. Pulled the tubes and cleaned the channel the gas runs through it with a wire brush and sand paper. Everything now ignites properly.
