It's because the opening mission takes place in Vancouver so that's technically where both of them were stationed when the war broke out. Also, pretty sure you get this line regardless of your origin.

@@AriaHarmonyCanada is still sorta British. They have the royalty on their money and while nothing is stopping them from changing it they don’t seem to really be bothered maintaining ties. The Brits don’t extract taxes from them AFAIK, but they and Australia still are pretty chummy and are officially associated even if not part of the empire of old. Even the USA is still remarkably close to Britain despite the history. Honestly there’s more dissent from Scotland and ((the non-independent part of) Ireland which are still de facto and Dejure part of the United Kingdom

Kaiden is from Vancouver, and It’s implied, never fully confirmed, that Shepard is Canadian too. Evidence against it exists too but nothing particularly damning. Both VAs are Canadian born and Mark Meer in particular sounds _really_ Canadian. Also BioWare was based on Canada, etc etc. Clearly not a useful thing for Spacers or Colonists, but yeah, Earthborn Shepard is implied to be Canadian raised if not born, maybe not Vancouver but definitely a slummy part of Earth. (He was in a gang)

A friendly reminder that Commander Shepard feels completely hijacked in the third game. The first two games did an excellent job making the player feel like they in Commander Shepard were one and the same. But then Mass Effect 3 and then later Andromeda shows up and suddenly we have lots and lots of Auto dialogue and other statements that Commander Shepard should not be making because they may or may not actually apply to the player.
