I’m in NE Ohio. Spend more time on road than off, don’t hunt in terribly remote areas, and wanted to pull my boat or a camper. Vehicle of choice was a GMC Sierra Double Cab 5.3 V8 4x4. Only “mods” are a hard tonneau cover and stick sized Cooper Rugged Treks. Gets me everywhere I need to go while carrying everything I want. I think the biggest key to vehicle selection is being honest with your needs and expectations

I've used a full size truck off road for the past 40 years I would never use a under powered vehicle with little towing and hauling capability for taking my family out. Without having to worry about weight. And I plan all my trails where size is no issue.

Sounds like your definition of off-road may be less technical than some. The places I take my truck a full size wouldn’t physically fit. People try. Then they back out the trail when the can’t make it 😅. But to each their own

Power Wagon: because sometimes Rubicons need someone to winch them out of a difficult trail. Also because sometimes you want something with 1 ton axles that can run 37+ tires.

Yeah my trail boss got pretty pin striped on the jeep trails but sure came in handy winching them cause of its weight. I just occasionally play. It’s a workhorse more than anything.

I decided to have both, Tacoma TRD and a PowerWagon. I put a shell on the PW to carry gear and sleep in, so it has a clean look to it vs the urban assault vehicle / Beverly hillbillies look. To each his own.

Got a 2013 f150 fx4 crewcab dents and scratches from going down jeep trails. People are always surprised to see me at the end of the trail. Spend the summer every year camping in the mountains a good percentage of that in my truck sleeping in the camper shell. My kid and dog are growing so just bought a new super duty to fit us and the prospecting, camping, fishing backpacking, toys, fridge solar panels in. We stay in the backcountry for weeks at a time several hours from the nearest walmart so nothing less than a crew cab full size will work for us. If you remove the sway bar and add about 1500 lbs of gear and lower tire pressure off road the superduty really rides pretty good. If you ride around with no weight and max psi like most folks i see it rides horrible heavy duty trucks are made for weight so adjust psi accordingly. I run between 20 and 30 psi depending on the trail with zero trouble. Obviously on highway air back up to about 40 and if towing heavy about 65.

We have a 2006 Nissan Titan 4x4 and we turned it into a overlanding truck. It has a 285/70R/17 and new Bilstein 5100 shocks and struts. We love our truck.

05 ford f150 XLT ext. cab 4x4. 6" lift, 35' snow and mud hybrid tires with 4.56 gearing, and Torsen Geared limited slip diffs front and back and upgraded brake pads and rotors. I have it set up for Overlanding and occasional towing. Works great.

I completely agree with you on the power wagon and have one myself, but he does make valid points. I went with a jeep club through the snow and though I aired down I sunk through the snow while my buddy in his 150 stayed on top. Do I agree that a full size is impractical? heck no, you can have my pw when you pry it off the cliff face, but to be fair a jeep will handle the Rubicon, I'd be REALLY surprised if you could get a pw down even the easiest portions of it. Currently own a 2011 Chevy 1500 on a 2” level with heavy duty leafs on 295/70/17 duratracs. It’s daily driven but I also tow and bomb quad trails with it. Just upgraded my front and rear bumpers to RC steel bumpers and threw a RC 12K lbs winch up in the front bumper. Wish I could post pics because people really don’t believe me when I say it bombs quad trails.

I have a 2016 F150 4X Sport. I got it to haul stuff but not super heavy. So far it hauls a flatbed trailer totaling 8000 lbs with no issues. I did get it stuck in 10 inches of snow one time. It has new General Grabber ATX tires but some day I would like to get a 2.5 level and a taller tire. Maybe 33". Really like your videos. Would like to see more pickup's out on the trail

I’ve got a 92 pickup and a 98 4 runner and I would say that I love them but I’ve only ever worked on them and now I’ve owned them for 6 months lmao. Lookin forward to seeing how they do out on the trails this summer tho

My 86 s10 did great in a swampy mud bog trail ride I had half tread mud tires peg leg junky 2.8 and I was the only truck other than my buddy's dakaota that didn't get stuck out of 30 trucks. I had 31s buddy had 33 everyone else had 35s and 38s on silverados f150s toyotas. Later put 31 new mud tires and a better 2.8 never had to lock in 4wd except to pull someone out had it buried to the doors still crawling.

Second gen 4 door long bed Tacoma 4X4. Great in the desert at speed, not so much in tight areas. Long wheel base is great for going fast but likes to high side when trying technical stuff.

I have had big trucks like dodge ram 2500 to extra small datsun single cab and in between and ibeen a off roader since I was 15 years old I'm 44 now and my favorite for off roading and most towing I do is my 2020 jeep gladiator rubicon

in the most extreme cases, the most capable 4x4s are almost always full-size trucks.. so you know, there's that. The occasional jeep (on full size truck axles) slips through, but by and large the "super 4x4" class of truck is a full size.

Ehhh trucks are typically heavier and larger which makes them more prone to getting stuck in the mud and terrain. The smaller offroad vehicles also have better breakover angles that you dont need higher clearance to achieve like you would need in bigger trucks. Trucks might be good for overlanding as they have more storage , than yeah. I mean side by sides are more effective due to their small sizes as well

Have had two Power Wagons. Just sold my ‘17. Have been pretty bulletproof overall. But after owning two PW’s since 2014, there are way too many compromises to go that route with today’s fuel and insurance costs.

New trucks are too expensive to take off road. 90s tacoma/4runner is no trailer hauler, but it will go places in 2wd that bigger trucks cant fit in 4wd. Is it really that good of an idea to go off road in a vehicle that cost as much as a house?

The extinction of the compact truck is causing trails throughout the west become hiking or OHV trails only. Sad, too. My 09 Tacoma is too wide for most of the trails I once did with ease in my older compact trucks. Small trucks with good 4x4 capability can go anywhere. Nice to see someone recognizing that the size of truck should be keyed to intended use ... rare wisdom.

Always wanted a power wagon, pretty awesome. But they are very heavy and like you said are quite large and uncomfortable. Then Jeep announced the gladiator and I saw it as a smaller version of the power wagon that was still capable enough to handle my truck needs. Always wanted a Wrangler Rubicon but honestly it couldn’t fit my needs. Love the gladiator, can haul 4 other people, my rifles, targets, chairs, tables, ez up, cooler, and grill to my BLM shooting areas. Also keeps my RTT below the roof line and still carried enough food and water for a 10 day overland trip through Utah. Only complaint is that they went too truck with it and should have went more Jeep. Like a 4.5’ bed that is connected hummer style to the cab. That and a hybrid hardtop/soft top would be amazing where you have 4 freedom panels that can accept a roll back top.

You got it wrong pal... If you need to tow and haul you are better off witg tge small single cab rearwheel drive automatique. A single cab 6.5ft bed f150 will tow heavier trailers than the same f150 with the crew cab and 8ft bed.

20" and above rims with low profile tires, 4-doors, long beds, anything with CV axles / struts in the front, open-diffs, no winch, no recovery gear - please stay off the trails.

Hey, my 03 gmc has ifs in the front and it's taken me on many trails. The pw hasn't seen as much action but you can do a LOT with a vehicle with cv axles. It's all about being smart on the trail. Though I agree with the 20" rims, they're going to get damaged. More rubber than rim is the goal.
