The lubrication is an interesting point. The journals are toleranced so the oil pressure creates a hydrostatic bearing. The sliding blocks are open sided & can't make a hydrostatic bearing. Wonder how they are going to solve that....

There is a change you can make to the Scotch Yoke so it becomes more similar to a gear (toothed) and don't need all of this B.S., but this wasn't used in this engine.
@lassikinnunen
@lassikinnunen 3 ай бұрын
If you feed oil through the crank as you do into the sliding blocks they can have oil pressure from within to keep the oil film on their surfaces. Not that it makes it better than a spinny spinny and in that path you'll have an another oil bearing transferring the rotation. Lightweight rods seems just so much easier and more sensible thing to chase for high rpm engine and look 4 and 3 cyl engines being smooth is a solved problem

He has never heard of fork and blade con rods, as used in the DB605. I have been saying for over a decade that an engine designed as a generator around a set rpm and power output would be much better than a variable speed variable load engine as most cars have. You dont need this style of engine to do it though. Back in the 80's the CSIRO experimented with ceramics MgPSZ and made pistons and cylinders from the material. They allegedly achieved up to 60% efficiency.

I remember CMC/Sytech working on their engine at University of Melbourne back in the late 1990s/early 2000s. I saw their functional four cylinder prototype fitted into a Subaru Legacy for on-road testing. To be honest, with the lack of news and announcements from them over the decades, I thought they had quietly folded, disappeared and given up! Obviously they don't have the research funding of a major car company, but I do hope they made some progress over the last 20 years. P.S. I just had a dig through some old backups and I found a couple PDFs and low-res video dated 2006. Can upload if interested.

Its just the fact that the engine can't rev as high and needs a balancing shaft just to reach 4500rpm yet has comparable or worse results than just a conventional engine. I once read an article about adding a steam engine to a gas ICE. According to almighty Wiki, it had a thermal efficiency of up to 60%. For a normal car, I think adding a steam cycle with condensor and water tank is quite cumbersome and probably not worth it. But what about adding a Stirling engine or cycle, would that make any sense?

If you just step out of the third world things must be really exciting as you start to learn all the things people have done for hundreds of years. This guy is like Del without tools! “I read this yesterday,” let me explain it to you , I’m an expert.😃

Most of “educational “ channels like this. They find something interesting for them and basically share without deep understanding.

@@vitordelima It doesn't mean it is good thing. If nobody shows you how to cook, it doesn't justify teaching you how to eat from trash bin. In most cases, there are a lot of proper resources. But as any learning, they require more substantial efforts to understand. But people don't like apply efforts. People like to consume information which make them feel that they learn/understand something while actually they learn on the level of "water is wet".

There should be a wiki about experimental engines and mods, it's too much potentially useful information buried in a mountain of nonsense and almost lost.
