It's a great city for just wandering around, especially the back streets where there's less chance of being run over from any number of directions. One thing I liked was that I didn't get any hassle at all to buy things or to get a taxi or whatever, perhaps times are tougher there these days

I went there three times in my own in the 1990s and did meet some solo female travellers there! I did meet two Irish sisters and they were going off to various night clubs that just seemed too dodgy for me.

@ I travelled to Morocco on my own and after a couple of very bad experiences, decided that Istanbul would be off the agenda. Mind you I got mugged in Venice when walking by myself to my hotel! Luckily there was nothing worth having in my bag at that time. Otherwise I was fairly lucky in my solo travels which were in the 70s. Young and free, I miss those days!

Hello, Scott!! How did you navigate through all that traffic, the trams and the barriers? Not a walkable city is an understatement!! Some of those steps you climbed were falling apart, and those deserted galleries look awfully dicey to me. When you were free of the congestion, it was a beautiful city. It was a surprise there was no food shown. Turkish food is delicious, but I've only eaten it in the US. The cats were very enjoyable, though some of the poor things looked starved!! Scott, better not show the video to jasper might get the wrong idea. You should visit a traditional Turkish barber shop while there, and the traditional Cafe with smoke, .
@suebt87946 сағат бұрын
Just one question Scott...did you feel safe there?
@shugieshugied226910 сағат бұрын
14 degrees is not big jacket weather. The locals might stare at you because you're clearly not a local by dint of your skin and hair colour. I'm traditional Scottish colour too, and used to get stared at when on holiday in Spain as a kid, before mass tourism. But when I was wandering about suburban Taipei in the 1980s, the locals regarded me as if I'd just got off an alien spaceship, that was weird.
@jotunbloood7 сағат бұрын
It was literally 15 degrees last week in Scotland in December while İstanbul was 5-6 degrees. Turkey has white pale blue eyed people. Don't be a racist.

@ In the 50 years ago since I first visited Istanbul, the world has changed a lot, specially the geopolitics of Islamic countries with the Arab Spring. Revisiting Istanbul two years ago was to see the city transformed with prosperity and progress. Btw I live in Canada, not the UK and we are not the USA.
