MURS is used by dog tracking systems produced by Garmin and is very popular in the southeastern US where hounds are used for hunting (deer, bear, raccoon, rabbit...). If you are in these areas in the fall there's a good chance you will hear strange rhythmic sounds on these channels, which are the signals the dog collars transmit with location information. On other radio service you might want to consider is marine band. The "rules" do not require a license, but that the radio is be used on the water.

Completely acceptable and socially admirable question.... GMRS repeaters operate on a 5Mhz offset so I'm assuming the repeaters local to me, 462.575 for example, receive on 467.575 and transmit back on the 462.575.... and my radio would receive on 462.575 but transmit to the repeater on 467.575. And all this needs to be programmed into the radio for everything to work correctly. That's what I understand so far and if I have that wrong please correct me. But my question is concerning transmit and receive tones. Assuming I have both the transmit and receiving tones correctly programmed into my radio... does the receiving tone limit what I hear on that particular frequency(462.575) to only the traffic transmitted(by the repeater or any transmitting device) with the corresponding tone? In other words, if a GMRS designated frequency, (example 462.575) is the receiving frequency of a local repeater and assuming everyone in my area only receives on that frequency from the local repeater AND everyone has that specific tone programmed into their radio to receive on that frequency from the repeater....... would anyone hear other people transmitting and receiving on 462.575 (no offset of course) if those mysterious happy hams had no tones associated with 462.575 programmed into their radios?

..it looks like you are learning! ... You are correct.. a GMRS repeater received on 467, and your radio transmits on 467.. The repeater transmits on 462, and your radio receives on 462. On a GMRS radio you dont have to worry about any of that, its all automatic when you use a "repeater channel".. When using a repeater, the RECEIVE tone on your radio is optional - all it does is limit what you hear on that channel to ONLY the repeater sending the same tone, so you do not hear other people chatting on the matching simplex channel. So if you use the the RX tone you don't hear anything but the repeater. If you _do not use_ use the RX tone you hear the repeater, and anyone/anything else on that channel. Everyone else also using that matching simplex channel also hear the repeater, assuming they are not using any of their own tones.

Yeah I was at work thinking about this and I realized why you personally know guys who transmit on repeater 467 frequencies with each other without interacting with the repeater. The repeater doesn't get tapped if those guys aren't using the repeater's tones and everyone else with radios that interact with that 467 never even listen to the traffic on it, it's just their radio's squirt frequency. Hey I really appreciate you taking your time to answer my question. I just got the BF-F8HP PRO and I really like it. I'm using the BTECH programming software along with CHIRP to program it along with my UV5R. The manual says that the SK2 monitor button is programmable. I'm hoping that in the future BTECH will release an update that allows assigning SK2 as a Zone button, enabling us to flip thru the Zones we got programmed. Anyway thanks again!

Phones are locked into specific frequencies which the user cannot change. However anyone interested in ploughing through all the rules & regulations can soon discover that you dont need a licence to use a radio (providing you comply with frequency & power requirements). Acquiring a licence simply gives you access to more frequencies and power. Its a trade off that many feel is worth taking because the journey is often more interesting than the destination.

Best thing is to get a pair of Retevis RT-10 handheld radios, they are 900mhz, support DMR and have detachable antennas. Hardly anyone has 900mhz radios especially DMR ones. The best part is that 900mhz is also a part 15 ISM band so no license is required if you run digital (analog requires a ham license). Motorola also makes 900mhz digital radios called the DTR and it requires no license.

Use LPI signals (ideally with encryption) at the minimum wattage required. Such as freq hoppers or DSSS. Transmit a freq hopper in pager frequencies because it makes it harder for analysis tools to ID it, freq hops look like pager bursts. Transmit DSSS on unused bands, it should be undetectable unless an autocorrelation function is applied, which is what DSSS receivers have

If you want a private conversation on a frequency and you don't care you can get a few more options than listed. All are rule breakers except one. You can build your own radio at much higher freq. than anyone else uses in the higher Gig like 25. Most that high are not used but you would have to point the antenna directly at the person you wish to converse. I have had a few CB radios that have 'extra' frequencies, lower and higher and those are fairly empty for the most part. If you look at the Ham bands there is a few that are in-between the allotted to Hams and no one else, so some of those are a rule breaker option.

MURS is decent for outdoor activities that need a bit more range than FRS or GMRS as the lower frequency can travel through more obstacles. Contrary to popular belief, however, CB is not dead and might just be your best bet if you want to play around with out-of-band middle-fingering of rules. If you have an actual interest in radio as a hobby, CB is also a good place to start for that as you have plenty of options to play with to prepare you for licensed radio stuff. The CB channels are now opened up to FM use, so you can play around with FM or AM or upper/lower sideband, and you might even be able to mod your radio for out-of-band frequencies. AM or sideband use on a CB is about as close as you can get to HAM legally without a license and it's especially fun at times of high solar activity like we are currently in as at certain times you can hear or chat with people well over the horizon. TL;dr is that if you just want to chat with a local friend, go for MURS or CB but if you have a serious interest in radio as a hobby, start with CB or GMRS and learn all you can. If you ever get a license for HAM or GMRS, make sure to use a PO Box that has a street address instead of your home address, in another town over if possible.

MURS are good for kids to use to play and during hunting season the channels do get busy, seems many hunters are cheap. CB is still busy on the weekend especially in the midwest, people get bored driving and want to talk to strange men they do not know.

Seems the US is quite restricted compared to Australia. Here we have the UHF CBRS Band on 476-477Mhz which was created in Melbourne in 1977. We are allowed to use many Commercial grade transceivers such as Motorola, Simoco, Tait, Icom, Kenwood, Vertex, Philips, etc as long as you are transmitting a maximum of 5 watts, which of course most of us do not. However, much like the FCC, the ACMA in Australia treats CB operators like children.
