Just so we’re clear. Big boss is Jack from MGS3. The snake in this game is not Big Boss. He is Venom Snake, who is essentially a deep fake of big boss in real life. The real Big Boss is actually Ishmael from the beginning, and during this entire games timeline is building Zanzibarland
@PlebNC3 ай бұрын
You're correct up to your last point. The game's timeline isn't about building Zanzibarland, it's about the build up to the Outer Heaven Uprising in Metal Gear 1. The games events take place prior to it with the final cutscene with Venom in front of the mirror taking place shortly before Outer Heaven happening. The tape is Big Boss briefing Venom on everything and is used to explain why Solid Snake seemingly kills Big Boss twice in Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake as Venom was a body double in Outer Heaven and the real Big Boss was in Zanzibarland.

There is a lot to comment here. -I chuckle every time I remember we went from 4/Rising's "Nano-machines son" to V's "Actually everything is parasites" explaining how the Boss's original squad and Volgin's powers came from parasites. -The story of the game was a huge let down for me once I originally played when It came out (I got my first job exclusively to pay for it). However, as time passes, the ideas there just continue to grow in my heart. I love Quiet, and how Kojima managed to meta insert us into the game. Of course we (the player) are Big Boss, we have always controlled everything! -This is meant to be the conclusion for Big Boss story, and while it doesn't really depict him as the Villain from the early entries, it fits. He has always been a prisoner of the missions/role he is put into, while I believe he is good, we didn't have the best company (Looking at you Ocelot) which ended up in all his wrongdoings. While Solid Snake, we had great support from friends, making him the "hero" of the franchise. -My fever dream would be to play as Solid Snake with this level of mechanical polish. -The gameplay of this game is leaps and rounds above everything else, to this day I haven't found a third-person shooter with as many options, or better controls as this game. -Ranking it is difficult indeed, some areas are great, which only highlights how bad some others are.
@AntResilient3 ай бұрын
My dream scenario for this game would have been: -Turn more of the Filler main missions into secondary. -Have the difficulty modifiers for all of them. -Shorten the scope of the maps. -Shorten the game overall. I would have loved for this game to be a revamp for the MGS franchise kind of how breath of the wild was for Zelda, or the Arkham games for Batman. To have at least 2 more games built upon this same engine, and mechanics, adding new settings, tweaking and polishing mechanics along the way. Also, the Development story for the game is crazy, I feel the game is a mess because neither Kojima or Konami knew how to work with each other anymore. I'm sure that had someone told Kojima to "limit" the scope of the game more from the beginning, we would still have him expanding this world. The game isn't a 10/10 game, because it tries to be three 10/10 games at the same time.

It really made the embrace at the end of MGS4 mean a lot more. I was really confused at that game, because between MGS3 and MGS4 there wasn't really anything to suggest boss wasn't the villain he was portrayed as. Dude…. You completely misunderstood the ending. Venom feels betrayed. Just like the player does. That’s why he punches the mirror. That’s why the song is The Man Who Sold the World. The legendary soldier went into hiding and used his own loyal man as a human shield. It’s a terrible betrayal of someone who believed in him. He literally steals his life! And Kojima spoke about how it was difficult to make the player feel they were the bad guy when they were playing as Big Boss. It disturbed him that nobody saw him as a villain in Peace Walker… because they justified his actions as the player. So with V he has Big Boss betray US. So we feel that pain. It’s a horrifically evil thing. And a genius twist. Why do you think he set it up that way?? If Venom was just going to go… “huh, ok” the why even have the twist for the player?

Venom being a semi silent protagonist is stupid. Kojima couldn't commit to one side or the other. He is both a nameless medic, and he is supposed to be us the player. He is both Big Boss, and he is a phantom/doppelganger. He can talk, and obviously does talk on a few occassions, and yet he doesn't, making situations akward like when he sat listening to skull face on that long car ride.

1:09 "MGS5 is an *ACTION-ADVENTURE* stealth game." That right there is the thesis statement for how so many players misinturpret Phantom Pain. The entire MGS franchise (with two or so exceptions, in Revengance and perhaps another I'm forgetting) is stealth, first and foremost. It even says as much over each title: MGS (1998) "TACTICAL ESPIONAGE Action." MGS2: "TACTICAL ESPIONAGE Action." MGS3: "TACTICAL ESIONAGE Action." MGS4: ""TACTICAL ESPIONAGE Action." and yes, even MGS5: "TACTICAL ESPIONAGE Operation" (even going as far as replacing the word "ACTION" with "Operations" since it is open world). The words "tactical" and "espionage" denote the stealth foundation of the genre it damn near single-handedly created. Metal Gear Solid is meant to be played *stealthfully,* not guns a'blazin while blaring 80s rock from a helicopter. Phantom Pain going from stealth to action is like Call of Duty going from FPS to RPG. I understand that making it open world with guns guns guns makes sense to increase sales, but it bastardizes the gameplay. Also yes, I know *all* MGS games have zanny action in them, but again, look at where it's placed in the subheading of every game. After Tactical, and and after espionage. The action comes from the story, not the gameplay.

I highly disagree that mgs5 have the best stealth in the series. The main point is Fox Engine isn't optimised for handling stealth in multiple story buildings. You can notice this in airport, where guards on all floors can hear snake making noise in any part of the building. Thats why the airport is the only building in the game with more than 2 floors.

I am a MGS5 apologist, but there are so many easy tweaks they could have done that would have made a more satisfying send off. Besides just not finishing the game, not including David Hayter in some way was a huge mistake. Even if Kiefer was Venom for the entire game, all they needed to do was during the “Truth” reveal have Ismael’s voice suddenly be changed to David’s. I as a fan of this series would have lost my mind and immediately forgive how unceremoniously they dropped my hero form the series. That way they could achieve what they wanted with the venom character while still catering to fans.

Got to point out the FOB system is a freemium F2P style portion that does at least minimal impact to your single player missions. I think it might be impossible, and absolutely at least very infeasible, to get the upper levels of "single player mode" gear researched. By that, I mean the kind of stuff they expect you to be able to afford and deploy in single player alone. You only get 1 base that is fully single player, and the second is able to be attacked. It might not happen much, but even when the PS3 version had a little bit of age on it, I got attacked twice and lost some soldiers, and never attacked anyone else. Getting 3rd+ base also requires the freemium currency, where you either need to play the game in general and check you freebies enough, or possibly pay up real money. I think there's a mod to work around this, and it's still unclear what may ever happen to this if they pull the servers down. Obviously if they don't patch it, it's going to be a pain or require a mod. Otherwise, the game play is extremely fun. Also, it looks amazing, even back on the PS3 version. I feel the story of what we got is incomplete, especially as a game filling the gaps between the prequels and "sequels" that left HUGE plot holes that could spell the end of the world if left unresolved, and I fully except Konami would have had to money to let it be finished. Konami falls into megacrop territory, and possibly the first gaming company to lead the way into milking gambling and mobile gaming as a much easier means of extreme profit, which has been for little more purpose than to make already insanely wealthy investors even more money. I especially poke that jab at them, when you consider how much they sold Ground Zeroes for, despite how little content it had.
@vhsretrogamer16642 ай бұрын
I wish they had more missions like "start naked and get equipment on a mission". Also I wish enemies were much smarter and had better vision. It's a matter of a few float variables, I think Konami could do some kind of hardcore difficulty for the whole game

What I find funny about Venom Snake's appearance (and I know he has had his face changed) is that he had no burns to his body or face. Infact none of the three guys do. Volgin gives him little fires on his straight jacket, Snake gives him his horn, Eli/Liquid gives him a beret on his shoulder, and though it's really hard to see past the gas mask, Skull Face gives his domino mask.

MGSV still holds up well and so much replay value. But like anybody else I cant help but wonder how much better it would have been finished, if resources that made Survival or DeathStranding would have put back into Metal Gear. Many players just stop the game after defeating the Metal Gear, Part2 just adds to the confusion that is this games story. The pacing issues really drag the story down ( much like TLOU Part2) even tho the core mechanics are fine. Nobody wants to crawl through that hospital again and the games makes you do it again in the second part =). The game tries to be somewhat real with its mechanics and the setting in Afgahnistan and Africa but the story around is what many consider Kojima going way overboard, a more grounded story would have fit better. The story not being finished makes it even more confusing... That said, MGSV is always ready on my machine because everything besides the story confusion is just great. I usually replay missions again as they can be repeated in so many ways.

MGSVs delivery of the story definitely makes early missions seem off. Hero’s way (ep 3 first Afghanistan mission after Kaz) actually hints out about what happened at the fort you get the honey bee. However you can completely miss all this stuff so it seems disconnected. I also play MGSV in mission blocks that they are unlocked. There’s usually 2-3 set up missions then a conclusion. Eg ep 2-3-4 with the set up paying off in 6. Staying in the field and listening to tapes while going to next mission and then once you do the conclusion mission, soldier farming and side ops for a bit then do another sets of missions.

I don't know what Venom himself thought, but what Cipher and Big Boss did to him is the worst crime imaginable. The fact that these things were not told from the mouth of the Big Boss in the last scene of MGS4 seriously damages the value of that scene. I hate this conclusion. But I also feel that it is understandable to think that Big Boss is also just an old man and died with a secret that cannot be revealed to his son. Even with the Big Boss revealing everything, Solid Snake would surely have picked up the cigar for him tho. What I can't really sort out my feelings for is that there's no place for Venom in the final finale of this series. It even feels like the MGS5 shouldn't have existed. I still can't get it.

That's kind of the point. This game is a dark mirror of its thematic predecessor, mgs 2. All the roles played, and even the events that take place, are all inversions of the story beats and characters in sons of liberty. Thusly, when you arrive at the final scene of the game, the real snake isn't actually there to pat you on the back, and tell you that even though this was all confusing, and even though shady opportunists have conspired to use you in ways you couldn't have anticipated let alone fathomed, how you processed those events and what you choose to do with them are opportunities for you to venerate your own meme for the good of others, not be vengeful and bitter about it even though you have every right to be. No, in the phantom pain all he does is leave you with a recording of his voice telling you to forget yourself and adopt his meme instead. The game hates you. It doesnt care about canon at all. It actively works to undo it. In the universe of metal gear, the greatest trick the devil ever pulled is convincing the world he's you.
