Good tip “burning” the carpets. A tip on fitting Velcro: When you have decided where to position your Velcro, either on the carpet or the car, stick the opposite Velcro to the one you just glued on and take the backing off. Then carefully fit the carpet in the desired position and your Velcro strips will line up 100%.

You can buy what's called a bucket trowel. Which is made in that shape used for plastering
@matthewhaddon5993 жыл бұрын
Good tips Mike…I found that out about the trowel recently building a porch, I cut the end down, was a lot easier to use….Velcro tends to be pricey so I’d probably just use spray adhesive or find another method to keep them in, if I were doing it. I’d like a Defender, but the wife prefers the relative luxury of the Discovery Sport I have!!

Mike, the Wright Offroad matting system is well worth it - problem is I guess the shipping to your parts would be prohibitively expensive. And IIRC it's only for the front (seat box & forwards). Love your approach to the carpet though! You could always dye the too light stuff you have no?

Us older landrover owners don't bother with fitted carpets. I pick up some carpet samples (stiched all around) usuallly cost me about £1 each. Not too bothered on the colour.

could you not put the carpet into your mould for the middle tunnel get it hot them offer up the one you made sandwitch it in as i am sure your torch would get them warm just a thought,my front mats are all in one piece transmission and floor mats all joined together
@BritannicaRestorations3 жыл бұрын
I discussed this with my Fibreglass man - we could make a second mould by laying 1/4 inch sheet wax in the original female mould and then take another cover copy - this will give a gap for the carpet and we can use steam to form the carpet as this dries super quick A lot of work for one mat - but it could be done - maybe a winter project when we are not so busy?

Just saw the carpet is genuine only and £100 each only from LR if there is stock
@SalomaoFresco3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike. Have you tried to form the LR carpet with the heat gun? Just give it a bit of a warm up, bend it to shape as you glue it. I've seen it done on carpeting stairs... Just a tought. Tata
@BritannicaRestorations3 жыл бұрын
Yes it melts this type of carpet - problem is you cannot heat it from the pile side as you just have to turn the gun on and the pile melts! Other side is equally difficult = I did have a modicum of success with the steam cleaner - but you cannot glue at the same time! ( and it gets messy!)
@SalomaoFresco3 жыл бұрын
@@BritannicaRestorations Right. Also the carpeting that I saw being applied with the heat gun was a bit different of the automotive one.

Mike, i m from malaysia, may i seek for ur professional advise my defender is bare unit, i planned to apply the carpet before that need to apply the sound deadening layer. I m in doubt after installed the sound deadening Butyl Based Construction(3mm), do i still need to stick a layer of EVA closed foam (5mm)? Then follow by mass loaded vinyl layer (2mm). After this only apply carpet underlay then the carpet. May i know can i apply as the above method? Thanks Mike
@BritannicaRestorations Жыл бұрын
When I did my last Defender I used the Kilmat butyl pads and then the 5mm EVA foam on top - made a difference to the drive as 5mm foam cuts another frequency of sound. I didn't put any underlay, just rot proof carpet on the top

I fitted a set of foam backed rubber mats from Exmoor trim in my CSW. They helped a great deal with noise and have been really good at dealing with the mud. They have a checker plate pattern and look really good. I have all the carpets stored in case I ever want to turn it back in to a townies car. A quick question if any knows the answer. Do you leave the pump lever up or down on the 300Tdi lift pump? I have a dim recollection of it mattering but can’t remember which way. Mines leaking so it’s going to be replace anyway but would love to know if it actually matters.
