Most of them are preteens or young teenagers and when you look at most media aimed at this demographic that’s what they’re being told is the better personality. The worst thing to come out of this trend was the prejudice against conventionally attractive girls. I just assumed they all had it easy, with lives as flawless as their looks then, since that seemed to be the consensus. Until my best friend told me about her other friend. She was the blue eyed, blonde, skinny girl everyone wanted to be like in the early 2000s. Popular, impossibly cool. She partied all week and seemed to always be going somewhere with someone. What I didn't know is that she walked everywhere because her parents couldn't be bothered to drive her or even check if she was ALIVE, and slept at the other girls' houses every other day for that same reason (so she literally depended on making friends to have a place to stay). There were rumours boys SA-ed her but no one pressed charges because "she's kind of a slut so", since the girl basically lived house-hopping. To this day I feel bad for ever considering her to be anything but incredibly strong.

I knew a girl like that who we all thought was just one of the mean, popular girls, but it turned out that her mother was incredibly verbally, psychologically, and physically abusive, and would actively try to murder her AT LEAST once a year. I feel so terrible for ever thinking poorly of her, and I pray that she has found happiness and peace. She deserves it. Especially since she was never really mean. We just didn’t like her because she was pretty, confident, and her family had a lot of money. The closest thing to mean she ever got was being a bitchy teenage girl just like the all rest of us.

that last post is 100% the most important part in all of this. society constantly bombards young girls with the idea that they have to act "like girls", look "like girls", think "like girls" and constantly excludes girls from stereotypically masculine spaces and hobbies. many teen girls turn to "not like other girls" because theyre fed up with the way society has treated them and their interests, but dont quite yet have the emotional complexity to recognize that "other girls" are not the problem, its our ingrained societal norms. the biggest issue is, and always has been, the ways in which consumerism influences and enforces gender roles in our society. a good example of what i mean is the pink tax, even though youre buying the same exact product as the "for men" option, the pink varient of it will almost always cost a little more. this is one of the many ways that corporations profit off of strict gender roles and why they are so invested in maintaining them. more examples are things like scam beauty trends, fast fashion, and laxatives disguised as "weight loss" treatments. "not like other girls" almost always stems from that deep seated discomfort of being seen as nothing but an ugly worthless piece of meat that needs to buy beauty products in order to be fit for consumption. its a very unfortunate fact that that discomfort all too often turns into internalized misogyny and disdain towards women that do enjoy those stereotypically feminine things. its such a pointless and senseless division when we all live and suffer under the same misogyny. something i always tell my sister's kids is that there is no such thing as "girl things" or "boy things", theres only things you like and things you dont like. i think if the rest of society developed that kind of mindset we would see an end to the "not like other girls" phase

This is one of the best and nuanced comments I’ve ever seen on this topic. I agree so much. The “not like other girls” pipeline is often taken /because/ those girls are often told they don’t “act like other girls” (aka liking stereotypically feminine things, etc). That was the case for me. I am also autistic and was picked on by other girls for that too. It wasn’t until I was older that I realized that misogyny (and ableism) was the enemy, not other women. It sucks that some never grow out of this and realize that.
@DraftyDraws Жыл бұрын
To add to this… It’s even odder when you realize that society, while expecting to conform to these roles and expectations, simultaneously demonizes them. It’s so weird how something that’s pushed on girls and is said to be the “right” option, is also judged by that same society that told them to like those girly things FOR liking them. Stereotypically girly things like makeup, boy bands, teen girl books (YA, more specifically), and others are always looked down on and scrutinized. As an example of this, I’m a girl who’s not overtly feminine, I usually lean more on to the side that these “not like other girls” butcher, and despite that my favorite book series is a very stereotypical YA series (Love triangles, one girl leading a revolution, the most basic of basic out there. Though, me being me, I personally interpret a lot more nuance in the story, but that doesn’t change the fact it still has those elements and I do like those elements). I really love it, but I feel embarrassed and struggle telling people I like this series because I feel that people will judge me for it. It’s just the oddest phenomenon. I’m sure someone could it explain this much better than I could, and if someone more knowledgeable on the topic wants to go into, definitely do.

I actually thought the "I'm not like other girls" thing was over. It turns out I was just hanging around the right circles most of the time, because I recently encountered a girl who constantly shat on the "basic" or "girly" girls on our campus. I was irritated with her, but moreso at her guy friends who would laugh with her and encouraged her for being "different" and "cool". I just hoped she'd realize how she can like the things she likes without the internalized misogyny... and that she'd find herself some friends who wouldn't put up with that and would be good influences.

That describes my college experience to a t! I thought most girls left that shit behind in high school but the moment I joined a sorority I realized how many girls are still stuck in that phase. The worst ones were the girls who felt l”wronged” by the “popular kids” so they made it everyone else’s problem. And were unaware or didn’t care that they were acting the exact same way as the people they hated. This isn’t to shit on sororities or Greek life btw. Any group of people can become toxic. All it takes is one or two toxic people and a bunch of by standers. All things considered I’d say we had a pretty good run if we’ve only run into a handful of NLOG’s in our time in college.

My experience with girls like this is guys keep her around because she's funny and enables their misogyny. Eventually she starts dating one of the guys, because she doesn't have girl friends to say "hey he sucks don't date him", and she's no longer "one of the guys" she gets given girlfriend status ie not as worthy as one of the guys. Eventually she realises she's being treated pretty shitty by the bf, tries to fix it and gets dumped because she was demanding or a bitch or whatever they decide to call her. I had a friend who went through this process again and again and it was so frustrating when I tried to point it out to her she got defensive on the guys behalf. I

My friends saved me. But now that this mindset started to fade, i'm happily displaying my interest in makeup, dressing up nicely, enjoying my music (kpop mostly), gaming and ADORING Sharpay (queen). Pink is a color, it's not feminine, in the past blue was the "female" color and pink the male one because the blue was regarded as softer and the pink as more intense, closer to red, which is also absurd, clothes well, many boys like them too, it's more of an indivudual thing, not a man or woman thing, and all people want to look good sometimes in their own way, it doesn't matter if you are male or female, and make up it's also created by us, it's not something inherently feminine, it's something that this society has created, what about other cultures? Men that wear make up? That have wore it in the past? Like for example the ancient egyptians? Make up also isn't a part of women's beauty or feminity because it just isn't a part of their body, so since it's not natural it doesn't make you more beautiful because it just isn't you, a part of you, that would be you normal self without any make up, it doesn't matter weather you are a man or a woman, and not wearing make up because I don't like it or the clothes I choose also don't make me less female nor does it makes anyone else less female, I was born female, with my own unique personality, I'm my own self, my own person, and I still am and feel female, my personality or what I do and wear doesn't change that, I'm my own person, male or female, of course I'm not like other women or men

Tbh I just kept going back and forth between having a superiority complex for not being like others girls and having an inferiority complex because of the same reason. I'm glad I finally got to a point where I understand all humans have multi-faceted personalities and I can just exist as myself without having to compare myself to others. this. sometimes i feel like ppl think i purposefully fake my interest, like im trying to be the "not like other girls. my mum is the worst in this aspect. when i say m fav colour is black, she tries to convince me its pink and stuff. i dont like nail polish, but she keeps tryna convince me that i will eventually or som. i think that the not like other girls phase is kinda stupid and is the fault stereotypes. ppl set their expectations of what girls should like almost like they believe we're all carbon copies of each other or preprogrammed machines. like we're human beings, we're all different in our own way and not all of us will like the same stuff or act the same way. to make it worse, the men grow up thinking that all girls are like what the stereotypes say, so when they meet someone different they think shes not like other girls and they find her interesting(like in the novels or whatever) and now girls are tryna use that to get guys attention, creating this whole toxic community and shaming those who do fit the stereotypes. like there's nothing wrong with being a girly girl, or a tomboy, whatever other stereotype, a mix of a few of them or a mix of all stereotypes. every girl is unique in her own way

This is the biggest problem affecting teenage girls.. hating their feminine nature, hating other girls and thinking they’re a competition.. it’s honestly just sad. If I ever have a daughter, I wouldn’t want her to face what I faced as a teenage girl, I never want her to despise herself while I do want her to ditch cultural standards and have a free mind

I feel like we also have to remember that yes the "I'm not like other girls" thing is toxic, but also if some women genuinely have different interests, we shouldn't shut them down by saying they are trying to not be like other girls.
@gyozagobbler420 Жыл бұрын
that's the thing though, by saying that they are enforcing those stereotypes. for example being a makeup artist and a mechanic, if the woman who is a mechanic says, oh, im not like other girls i like cars, she's enforcing and telling young people that makeup is for girls and cars are for boys. you can also just say you like cars without saying you're not like other girls.
@salamipiranha3249 Жыл бұрын
@@gyozagobbler420f course, but on the other hand: Women are always accused of doing everything for attention and there's nothing wrong with taking pride in working in a male dominated field as a woman (as long as you don't degrade other people of course.) And in my experience there's enough people, men and women, who will shut anyone down with the "uuugh not like other girls" talk even if they only talk about something that they like that they deem odd or weird.
@mym64 Жыл бұрын
@@gyozagobbler420 Yeah I get what you're saying, but I think what the commenter trying to say is more if someone had different interests but then were labelled as someone who thinks they are "not like other girls" despite never saying that, you're then shutting down their interests. Using your example, if a woman simply IS a mechanic, and then she is told she is trying to "not be like other girls" despite simply wanting to a mechanic. Obviously, the perspective that you are "different" and thereby degrading other people is messed up, but so is the perspective that anyone who HAS interests that are part of a certain subculture is trying to degrade everyone else. I might have misunderstood though, so...

@@gyozagobbler420 many girls get accused of being pick me even if they have never said that. The whole pick me syndrome won’t be a exist if women were treated as humans with respect but most of us were brainwashed to have a “man’s interests “ to be cool… so yeah many “pick mes “ are just victims of a society that hated feminity
@gargimulay192 Жыл бұрын
Exactly, honestly I feel so victimized by this whole pick me girl thing. I have many interests that are very different from what most girls like and that's just the way I am. But that doesn't mean I am doing it to stand out or be one of the guys. I don't have any interests that are common with guys . I don't like heels, nails, or am very fond or wearing makeup but I am not a tomboy either. I am just me and no matter what I am , someone is always going to point fingers at me .

When I was in high school, I admit that I had a major "I'm not like other girls" phase, then I realized it was just internalized misogyny and in college I started wearing more pink because I realized that I actually really loved the color. I started enjoying more of the "girly" things I was depriving myself of because I just wanted guys to treat me equally like another guy. Now I don't care what other people think of what I do or wear or like, and if someone treats me differently for being more feminine, then it's a them problem, not mine...I don't need to be putting down other women because we are both facing a lot of the same societal issues no matter how masculine or feminine we present (and that's without taking race and other factors into consideration because that just adds more complexities to the situation).
@absolutelyridiculous6743 Жыл бұрын
Yea, I had a similar experience. I had some convoluted Feminist viewpoints, mainly because of one of my friends constantly sharing her knowledge with us and me not understanding that it wasn't factual...I read the books she suggested, and in a way my deep depression and seclusion period helped me get away from that mindset. Embracing your feminine side isn't counter productive to all the efforts our ancestors fought for. Shaving your legs is self care, not forced beauty standards...it's a choice still. I think it's healthy to question why we make the choices we do for ourselves, it allows us to grow into the women we want to be. Sorry for the rant, I had a point but lost it...

Oh God I’m so glad my “not like other girls” phase was very short lived, I love fashion, makeup and pink and I’m super proud of it. It’s weird too because I feel like this makes us seem so 2 dimensional like, either you are super girly or super masculine when most girls are naturally in between. I love girly stuff like I said but I also love more stereotypically masculine things like boxing and football, we are human beings, and we all have several interests, it’s weird to put us all in a box like that.
@leonamvinoy3008 Жыл бұрын

I had a bad ‘not like other girls’ phase in middle school, mainly focused on my clothing and makeup. I’d wear baggy sweaters and leggings every day bc it was easy and I ‘didn’t care’ what other people thought. I also renounced makeup bc it was too girly. Now, 5 or so years later, I’m actually a lot girlier than most of the girls in my year in that I exclusively wear skirts lol. I also take a lot more pride in my appearance, wearing clothes I love and spending time on my hair, and I even recently started learning makeup which is super fun!!! It’s safe to say true feminism isn’t straying away from classic feminine stereotypes, it’s being whoever you want to be. Im so much happier now that I express myself more!

Alas, trauma can make people desperately crave being useful and aggressively independent. In my case it was many things from childhood. One of the big ones is that I couldn't depend on anyone for anything, so I internalized that into always doing everything myself and feeling like garbage if I can't. I've gotten better at letting others help me, but childhood trauma and the ingrained mental scars it leaves are an absolute bitch.
