exactly true: it gets me thinking about Darius and his motivations. I think for him, it really is just a job. He will do everything par excellence, yet he hasn't drunk from the Belos Kool-Aid like someone like K*kim*ra - or even S1 Lilith. A character allied with a movement (the Emp Coven) but having their own motivation forces beneath the surface is super interesting. And the idea of the Coven Heads having a constant fluid rivalry among one another is some real Game of Thrones shizzle. Raine's subservience to Plant, Abomination and Beast being such a close alliance... it both explains why the other heads haven't been introduced yet (aside from not needing to be), and further shrouds them in mystery.

When hunter called darious. Darious seemed like he really didnt like talking to him. To darious hunter is a copy of his mentor who goes against everything his mentor stood for. Hunter had no frame of reference of right from wrong because he's lived in the castle with the Emperor's Coven and Belos for 16 years. Belos raised him with a very warped sense of morality and he acts the way he does because he doesn't know another way of life. Darius,on the other hand, had a life before becoming Head of the Abomination Coven, interacted with people his age,went to a public school and had a family. He's also, spoilers, a grown man responsible for his own actions and behaviors and bullied Hunter for things he didn't understand. Him being nice only after Hunter "impressed" him is childish as heck and this just tells me he's a "fair-weather friend" through and through and that is NOT a compliment. What would have cost Darius, an adult, to be nice to Hunter,a child in an abusive situation and isolated from the rest of the world for a long time, for even two minutes with no conditions whatsoever? Nothing. Being nice to someone else is freer than free

Another way to see it (with Season 2 spoilers) Darius and Eber had their encounter with Raine and Eda a few weeks ago at this point, and later down the line, he said that when he found out it was them revolting, he knew there had to be a reason for it. I see his mistreatment of Hunter as his way of releasing his anger at Belos without getting himself killed, as before this episode Hunter was, as you said, the epitome of sucking up to Belos and carrying out his will without question. The name "Golden Guard" has kinda become an insult to him since Hunter took up the mantle, which is why he's so aggressive whenever he calls him that, up until the end, where he realizes there's good in Hunter, and the way to bring it out is by having him make connections with people that aren't his uncle.

I love how this show handles its characters. So many of them are presented in one straightforward way at first but are eventually revealed to be much more complex than we thought. Amity's an obvious example, Mattholomule gets some of it in his second major episode, and even after several episodes of just being the Emperor's loyal lackey we get to see Kikimora has more going on in her life and winds up in a genuine dilemma because of it(even though her desire for power and respect wins out thanks to Terra's promotion bluff). Now we see Darius in a situation outside just enforcing the Emperor's orders to capture Raine, and he actually seems decent. He first sees Hunter as just some kid who only does "exactly what (he's) told"- just another pawn for the Coven. Clearly he doesn't respect that at all, but once Hunter actually makes friends and goes against orders to save them- once he proves he can actually be his own person independent of the Coven- Darius admits he was wrong and implicitly promises to keep the palisman's existence a secret, even saying he'll make his predecessors proud. He actually wants to watch out for Hunter now that he's proven he can break free of the rigid form ingrained in his behavior. That's how you _develop_ a character beyond just being another antagonist, and this show is SO good at it. Can't wait for more.

This episode was great for many reasons, gave us more of an inside look into Hunter's life and history...sad history. I immediately noticed the old Golden Guard sigil recognized it, I even went back to confirm that it is Gravesfield's insignia and seeing Willow finally come into her own, the writers poking fun at all the crazy theories fans have been coming up with concerning the Azura books, from the creative to the down right insane. I literally felt for Luz when she saw the signing was cancelled something inside me just wept for her. When I first saw Tiny Nose as the writer I thought Kiki because of the height then the hair made me think Tiny Nose, but both were literally too on the nose pun intended, the reveal of Tibs selling the books after finding them don't surprise me the hack would sell his own mother for a buck. Then finally Darius showed his more pleasant side and finally stepped out of Horde Prime's Light(She-Ra fans will know what I'm talking about)

So many people missed how on Willows team of the Flyers shows Willows dads when they were kids. Meaning that could be where they met and that could be what got Willow interested in it. Darius I could see having a good side that he only shows at certain times. Also I get he is keeping a eye on Eda, Raine, and Lilith. But why dose he follow Alidor on social media. With how they act makes me think there is something more there. Like are they old friends or maybe even were a couple until Odlaia came along. I really think Darius is my 2nd favorite coven head next to Raine. He really seemed to be playing up the intimidating jerkass, but it really seemed like it was to scare them out of crossing any of the less forgiving coven leaders in the future, and to see if Hunter would just blindly follow orders. His actions also heavily recontextualize the events of Eda's Requiem. What if he 'accidently' allowed Raine to escape, and his annoyance at Kiki had more meaning, that he was also irritated she showed up and captured them.

I adore this episode so much, though! I love that Luz and Amity got to go on a little adventure, but their plot was clearly the B-plot of the episode since more focus was on Willow, and by extension, Hunter and Gus. These three are recurring supporting protagonists, but we barely knew them by the end of last season. Willow's getting the personality and depth she deserves, Gus is getting the chance to be more than just 'the illusion guy', and as much as I'm blasé about Hunter's existence, he needs to be fleshed out as well considering he's clearly a foil to both Luz and Amity. I love that the crew knows when to put the Lumity stuff on the back burner to let other characters shine without sacrificing the cute interactions and development between them. It was too cute seeing them theorize in this episode and follow the wild goose chase.

I just want to point out that Luz and Amity are still in a relationship with cute names, kind gestures, and a lot of caring. A LOT (if not all) of other shows would have them start bickering already, or show some cracks in their relationship, or try to figure out how to actually do basic relationship things like 'trusting each other' and 'communicating'. Thank the writers for making it a healthy relationship and not a side plot of sadness and uuuggghhh's.

I love how the Coven Heads are being portrayed as people and not as mediocre two-dimensional villains. It's like Zangief says in Wreck-It Ralph: "You are a bad guy, but this does not mean you are a bad _guy."_ Remember, pretty much _everybody_ in the Boiling Isles believes the Emperor is a good guy; he's strict and no-nonsense, but that's because he's "carrying out the will of the Titan". The main characters only know he's a villain because they're involved in the plot, and we have the benefit of audience knowledge, but as far as everyone else is concerned the Owl House crew is just a bunch of troublemakers like they always have been. When Darius and Eberwolf were sent to capture the B.A.T.s they probably weren't ordered to "Go stop this group that's trying to prevent us from oppressing of the populace", it was probably more like "Go arrest this group that's opposing the Coven system and causing a lot of trouble". Even Terra, who is messing with Raine's memory, could just be doing it to keep things running smoothly for the Day of Unity, not out of any actual malice. We just don't know enough about any of them right now beyond first impressions, which by virtue of audience knowledge makes them look like villains; Kikimora's really the only one that we unambiguously _know_ is an awful person.

My respect has grown tremendously for Willow, Hunter, and Darius because of this episode 😊 Especially Darius. Throughout this season, I constantly questioned what kind of character he was going to be, and it leaned on the positive side because he was voiced by Keston John, who has a few characters that redeem themselves well. *SPOILER'S FOR AFTER SEASON 2 EPISODE 16* Something that I've realized after watching Hollow Mind was every Golden Guard is just a Grimwalker. Hunter is made to be the next Golden Guard. Darius was friends with the last Golden Guard and probably saw him without a mask and heard his voice so he knows Hunter is just another version of the last Golden Guard. Belos says that all the Golden Guards have betrayed him which gets them killed. If Darius was close with the last Golden Guard up until his death then Darius probably knew about him wanting to stop Belos (maybe that's why Darius is against the Emperor in the first place). So when Darius says "You would make your predicesors proud" he's not talking about the last Golden Guard doing his job or completing tests. He's talking about going against Belos and becoming more then what he was made to be. Which is the path Hunter is starting to go down.

I just got back the other day from WonderCon in Anaheim, and there were some awesome Owl House cosplayers there! I saw Luz with a King plushie, Hunter with his staff and a tiny palisman, Amity with both hair colors, Willow with her new hair and a truly terrifying Belos!
