CLIP DESCRIPTION:
William (Hugh Grant) justifies his decision to break it off with Anna. His friends try to be supportive but he realizes he has made a mistake.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Can a beautiful and internationally famous American actress find happiness with a frumpy British bookstore clerk? She can -- at least for a while, it seems -- in Notting Hill. William Thacker (played by Hugh Grant) is a bookseller at a shop in the Notting Hill district in West London, who shares a house with an eccentric Welsh friend, Spike (Rhys Ifans). One day, William is minding the store when in strolls Anna Scott (Julia Roberts), a lovely and well-known actress from the United States who is in London working on a film. She buys a book from William, and she is polite and charming in the way a famous actress would be with a star-struck sales clerk. Their relationship would logically end there, if William didn't run out a few minutes later to buy some juice. While dashing back to the shop, he bumps into Anna on the street, spilling juice all over her blouse. Since he lives nearby, William politely offers to let her stop by his house to clean up; since William seems harmless enough, Anna agrees. When Anna has to stop back to pick up a bag she left at William's house, they kiss -- just in time for Spike to show up. A romance slowly blooms as his friends and family (not to mention the world at large) wonder out loud what he's doing dating a movie star. Notting Hill reunites Hugh Grant with producer Duncan Kenworthy and screenwriter Richard Curtis, who previously worked together on the international hit Four Weddings And A Funeral.

Two of my favourite films of Hugh Grant, Notting Hill and Four Weddings & a Funeral. In both films he was cast alongside people playing a very close and tight knit group of friends, who you just know would do anything for him and each other alike when called upon. I must be doing something wrong in life, but I don't have friends like that and far less know many other people who do.

I’m glad it worked out, but his reasoning behind turning her down was absolutely logical. She’d already hurt him and denied even knowing him to her coworkers. The only reason why they get together is to end the movie on a happy note, but I wasn’t upset at him for saying no.

She did not in general deny him to all co-workers; she denied that the had any meaning to one gossip. The wording was hurtful but it was done with a good reason. I'm 66 and long ago learned in London that if you want to "hear what you want to hear" ask a Girlfriend but if a Lady wants the truth, however brutal, then ask a Man... Obviously there are exceptions both ways but in Male Code very rarely do Men not tell other Men exactly what they really think without the sugar coating. Many Women are so scared of risking offence that they play it safe to preserve their friendship with the other Woman but that is, as you, rightly, say, not always in the interests of the Girl in question :)

In case anyone is wondering. The painting is from a French-Russian Painter from 1950 at the time worth $500-$1mn. Called La Mariée, the painting is depicts a yearning for something that's lost. Last sold in 2003. The directors made a replica with the permission from the owners, they were worried the replica might be too good so they agreed to destroy it. But I've heard Hugh Grant did take it as a gift from Julia Roberts to remember each by. Currently in Japan.

"I've made the wrong decision, haven't I?" No, you haven't. That woman liked you when it was convenient, but was ignorant when That was convenient. Then showed up with the request "love me love me love me I want love love me". It is funny to compare Anna with Summer from 500 days of Summer. Everybody (" ") loves Anna's arc, but hates Summer's. Because Notting Hill tells you to love Anna (marriage, pregnancy, actress, how dare you not like her) and the other tells you to think whatever you want about a non-happy ending (breakup, critical opening lines, marrying another one). Please do what Rachel told Tom: don't remember the good parts only but the bad ones too. Evaluate things based on the whole picture. - Summer was not a good fit for Tom and she was sometimes ignorant. But she was also quite fair and honest from the beginning. She was just as human as Tom, but with different weaknesses. - For Anna it was all about her, he could not trust her, she was ignorant and dishonest. Then the movie expects to forgive everything and marry this woman because of one moment when she showed vulnerability.

Spike is Welsh in the movie, right? No surprise he's the only one crazy enough and passionate enough to tell things the way they are...

Clearly he plays Spike Milligan fron The Goon Show and I loved it. Since then (and before) I wear his coat: 'Chicks Love Grey'

So did not care for this movie 20 years ago. Love it now. Not coz of the romance. Coz of the hilarious Brit humor.
