I've never been able to quantify game feel, but now I believe I can. I can state my gripes with Crash 1 with more nuance now thanks to this. It's an interesting point about the marriage of game feel and level design; never thought of it that way. Another thing: I didn't know until this video that Crash 3 had a longer release. I'm sure if I went back and tested it, I'd feel it too; yet, I've never noticed. I've also been playing the N.Sane Trilogy a lot lately, so perhaps the unified control scheme in that game made me forget about how 3 controls. One last thing: I more or less agree about the remakes of 2 and 3 being about visuals. There is one thing that REALLY bothers me though, and that's the load times. They aren't so bad playing through levels normally, but since this game doesn't have a retry button, the deathless routes are a pain in the ass to complete. You've gotta quit out and re-enter the level, and there's a loading screen for both the entrance and exit of a level. They could have easily fixed that with a level retry option, but it just isn't there for whatever reason. Great video, I jumped a little when I saw you in my feed. It's been a while.

"In reality you're to blame for failing to compensate the specific feel the developers have gone for. Whether you blame the controls or not depends on whether you think compensation is a good source of challenge." That's a good way of summing up Crash 1's difficulty. Once you understand Crash's momentum and you get used to compensating, you are able to land with precision anywhere you want. I wish that'd be brought up more often.

Now there is a thing in Crash 1 original most people don't know. Something where Crash borrows from Mario games and it shines throughout the bridge levels when "one-plank-gaps" appeear. Take a good guess from here. Of course thexy "fixed" it in the remaster.

To be fair to Crash 1, I don't think it actually requires that much precision. The platforms are spaced in such a way that if you just keep jumping and don't overcompensate, you will generally land safely. There's a flow/rhythm to the game's levels. If anything the problems come when you THINK you need to be precise and second guess your movements. This unfortunately doesn't apply to the remake, which changed the physics to such a degree that the rhythm of movement no longer exists.
@iiPotatoes7 жыл бұрын
As someone who has never played crash before the remakes, I found the controls to be god awful for the first game. I even bought crash 1 on psn to make sure it wasn't just me. I found that not only was almost every jump easier to make, but I also felt precise. I'm really not understanding what everyone's frustration is with the first games controls are. Especially compared to the remake.
@StonyHarpy7 жыл бұрын
Sorry to reply to an old comment but it's possibly the fact that people forget how games played, or conflate those memories with how modern platformers move, so being similar to what they're familiar with makes it "better". I can also confirm that the original version's controls are fine, having played through it a few months ago, I'd even go as far as saying the platforming feels pretty good.
@looklook8765 жыл бұрын
StonyHarpy Was going for gold relics in crash 1 NST and kept failing jumps on sunset vista. Tried the original crash 1 on my PS3 and I ran trough the level on my first try with no deaths. It's really annoying me that they made the remakes control worse and that a lot of people don't mind.

I know most of you will disagree with me but I prefer playing the original crash 1 vs the remastered version. I do prefer the remastered version for the other 2 games. But however 30 fps does mean your inputs will be read 30 fps compared to the original 60 fps. Meaning your inputs will be drastically less responsive.

Good to have you back Nova. And on ADSR, would jumping have its own specific graph independent of running? Because I feel like decay would work well with jumping, though its hard to mentally work that into the graph because most games don't sustain a jump. I guess they could just be Attack, Decay, Release?
@Novacanoo7 жыл бұрын
The thing is, jumps have two. The lateral movement ASR envelope changes while in the air in most games, so releasing the controls slows you down differently to if you were on land. Then you have to think about the jump itself, which has a separate one for how it works vertically, which as you say is actually more like an ADR envelope since you can't jump upwards forever. Basically, I simplified it for the sake of introducing an abstract, unknown concept. The book is where all this stuff is at.

Ooof, ok, I have to disagree hard on Crash 1’s remake being the best way to play it. The saving feature being more generous is nice but the changes to the physics actually make certain levels, ESPECIALLY the Arctic bridge ones so insanely brutally difficult as to be near impossible. Watching the original PSX footage of Crash breezily cruising along bouncing off turtles is a far cry from the fickle, clumsy downright frustrating task to trying to do the same thing in the remake.

What kind of games are you now looking to cover on your channel? It should go without saying that you should cover as you please but as a longtime viewer, these are the games and series that I'd like to see. I'd also like to note that this comment isn't just to give my recommendation. I genuinely want to know what you have planned. -The Infamous series -Sly -Spyro -Halo -Newer Ratchet and Clank Titles. Maybe even Deadlocked specifically as the game had uniquely snappy controls. This is a short list because you can make hours of content with few games, let alone a series. I'd also like to see what kind of games you recommend. You stay very objective mechanics of a game but it would hurt to have specific videos on what YOU prefer. Maybe you could take the mechanical magnifying glass to your explanation on such a title. Anyway, good to see another video of yours. Don't disappear for another 6 months. We miss you. Unless it had impeccable level design, I'm not sure why you'd play a platformer without fanagling compensation.... that's the game play, isn't it? Interesting "feel" concept. But luckily gaming reality ignores your feelings. Quite literally. If that thought concept ever took off the gaming world would have turned hyper woke over night.
