For those wanting a high output oiler for the 400 order an oiler for a Stihl 460. The 460 oiler is the correct oiler for the application. The mounting holes on the 462 oiler are incompatible with the 400.

Stihl hold my beer. We are discontinuing this model and ditching the mag piston. Down grading to 400.1 Best 70cc class was the OG 044. It had the best balance between other “bests” 371/372, 046. Once the EPA got in the way and every saw gained the freshman 15 they all got heavier than before. 2000 25 years later just trying to where we where.

I can’t wait to sling some chips with it! This video gives me a sense of assurance that I made the right decision. Funny story, when the guy that sells you the saw comes back from firing it up to make sure the oiling system is good grinning ear to ear saying that’s a heck of a saw, either he is very new with little experience, or he’s very impressed. Out west, the 661 is hard to argue with. I love the 064s as everybody knows by now I'm sure, but my basic ass 661 build puts out 10.7hp and can run every single day for multiple seasons, cutting big ass trees without a hiccup. If I had to pick one saw to do for a customer and had to bet my ass they'd never have an issue or complaint it would have to be a 661. 400 would probably be a close second if we're talking saws still in production.

Yeah, lots of guys really love their big saws, you are not alone there. Maybe someday I'll have enough experience with the big saws to do a "Best Big Saw" video. As it is, I can't imagine the level of hell that would force me to cut the canopy of a huge oak into a 1,000 pieces of firewood... using only a 661 with a 36" bar! I'd much rather double cut the trunk with a smaller saw than have to lift the bigger saw to cut up all that small stuff.

I’ve been running mine since they hit the market and fell in love with it especially after modding it and now it’s ported by Charlie Brisco and I would almost bet it would clobber a stock 660 even with a 28-32 inch bar. They really are pound for pound in a league of their own and honestly it out performs my ported 462 and it will hang right there with a really really meanly ported 372 minus some of the torque my Brisco built 372 but about the same chain speed. I think you nailed it spot on with a good runner up would probably be a 372 or 066 for just getting the job done and never complaining about it……. I don’t know exactly how long Ive had mine but I bought the first one available from my local ace and to think, I almost bought a 362 instead because I’d never heard of a 400 before that but since that day it hasn’t given me a minute of trouble and it gets used every single day so there’s no telling how many hours are on it but if it was to blow up tomorrow I’d go get a new one before they screw up a good thing lol Hope you’re doing well buddy

G'day NL, I have a MS400 with a 20 inch bar if you try a longer bar in the hardest woods on Earth you are going to find problems that's why Stihl test their saws in Australia and build them for Australian conditions, yes that's an actual thing.I use it for limbing and small wood because of it's weight and speed. Some people have asked why buy a 400 when the 500 is only 1.3 pounds heavier and more powerful ? for me it was about where it fit into my lineup of Pro Stihls. The MS400 is not the best saw here but it is the best sub 70cc saw ever built, The best saw ever built is in my opinion and that of Donny Walker the over square bore 066 Magnum MS660 variants tree eaters as Ironhorse calls them of which I have two and one .

I watched a ton of saw videos. 462 was my first choice when i up graded from my 290 farm boss, witch by the way is the best homeowner saw ever made, IMO. Anyway it was during covid, my local dealer said he had one on order but it may be a year if he could even get one. He did have 1 400 on the self so i settled and bought the 400, $1008.00. That was 2 years and 20 full cords ago. I still get giddy every time im bucking firewood with it. I bought a bark box and dogs from Westcoast saws. Ran the stock exhaust first season to get it broken in, then put the bark box on and reset the m tronic. Only ran the bark box for 1 truckload, put the stock exhaust back on. Every video ive seen swoons over the bark box but my experience was it cut just as fast with the stock can with less noise. The engineers made a great saw right out of the box and im glad that i couldn't get the 462. I may port it some day, i retire in 2 years, then ill have time to fix all my broken shit and play with my saws. Going to put an expansion chamber on the 290 also, just because this is America.

I didn't know squat when I bought my first saw. A used 2008 290. Fantastic saw. I just hate how all the wood dust ends up on the airlifter. I have been running it along side my new 400. Nearly not a spec of dust in the 400 filter/housing. Definitely I nice step up
@ericoverdorff8880Күн бұрын
@TheNutzandBoltz true about the filter but I probably only cleaned mine 3 times in 12-13 years. Not because it was running poorly but because I thought I should. I also ran every crap mix oil known to man, even motor oil because I went out and realized I had no mix oil but did have some 30 weight. I had my muffler off this past year to pull the screen so I took a peek at the piston. Not a scratch, mark of any kind, no carbon on the screen and barely any on the piston. I always ran it hard and put it away wet with almost no maintenance. It's cut well over 100 full cords and still runs like a rockstar. The grab handle has been Jerryed back together and the chain brake got tore off by a twisting tree when falling it but it just won't quit.

Any company that requests any technology must be given the rights to that tech. Stihl would not likely exist without this law because nearly every advancement they have made was gotten this way. That being said... Stihl made improvements over the Husqvarna tech. It just seems to work better. Now I will say this, the Auto Tune on the 562xp mk2 and the 592xp is much better. 5. Echo 590 4. HQ 550 3. HQ 346 2. HQ 246 1. P 5000 My opinion, not saying it is the correct opinion for anyone else. Since the timber in 🇳🇴 is like it is 50cc saws are what we use. Why the 5000? I will give you my reasons for it. - Fuel tank capacity is 40% higher than any other 50cc saw, including 550 XP. Longer runtime means more work done in a day. - The fewest amount of AV mounts of any 50cc saw (3). Two are rubber, rubber gives the best effect. And it is easy to tell if they are in good shape unlike when they are not visible mounted to fueltank. - The handles are not mounted to the fuel tank only. Optimum control and feel with the crankcase and tank as one piece. - The intake does not consist of intake blocks who crack and deteroriate over time like Huskies. - The intake bolts are not threaded with a bolt to the cylinder or plastic, heat and vibrations is not transfered to the carb. Also there is no possible ways for bolts in the intake to come loose, with it being nyloc nuts and the retaining screws for air-filter providing extra support for the nyloc nuts holding the carb in place. Intake leaks are so extremely common in chainsaws, and can sometimes be a bitch to diagnose. So this is very important to me. - Best power to weight ratio in stock form. - Exhaustcan is easy to open and clean, no need for an angle grinder or welder. - The limbing brace between front handle and rear handle protects operator from vibrations when limbing. - Fuel tank is not made of plastic which will leak alot of the time. The saw that made Electrolux buy Partner, no saw has been able to match it in my opinion. I have not experienced fuel boiling like some say these do in the summer. I also think the fact that angles make for a really slender skinny and easy saw to operate.

i ran one quite a bit at my old job stock and i found it lacking in torque and power for the weight. the 500i is is barely heavier and has way more power. my favorite saw though is the ms440 mag or the 046 early version's with the D cylinder. not saying the 400c is bad at all its a good little saw

500i is the best

My 044 will run circles around that and sound the part doing it. I have a 362 built up and it’s a turd compared to the 044

044 is a CLASIC. My 036 is a workhorse of a saw but it isnt as smooth as my 362 and its also not as good anti vibe my hands get beat up a bit more but not bad.

MS361 is the best chainsaw ever made. The 362 was a step backwards.

I thought this channel dissaeared after he caused the drama attacking a fellow powersaw guy

I didn't "attack" a fellow powersaw guy. I got my fucking saw back from someone who has been known to steal other people's shit. At least 5 other guys that I know of also got their saws back. He had some of them for more that two full years. I had the sack to say what needed to be said for a very long time. You're welcome. I'm always here to serve the community.

So a chainsaw that you had to pay a pile of money for had a bad carburetor, and you had to spend a bunch more on a different oiler, (poor design) is the best designed saw ever made? No saw can be the best if it's not a logger saw. The 400 is essentially a very expensive firewood or tree service saw, but not a logger saw. A logger saw has to be designed for a minimum 28 in bar without being nose heavy, and have a track record to be king of the woods. A 372 would be a great argument, but the husky 288 would have to be king. Probably the easiest to start, easy to get more power, stout build, and no problem falling timber in the snow, all would make it best ever overall. Plenty of vibration, and poor stock power to weight compared to the modern stuff as well of course. Thanks for the video.

MS 400.1 5.3 hp and 5.5 kg (12.125 lbs.)… So similar horsepower and 2/3 of a pound lighter than the current 400.

They are cheating in weight. Put it on a scale and you‘ll see it. thats what all Brands are doing.

They run hotter out of the box. Its closer to 6 hp before a porting job and not broken in, and around 8 hp after a good work saw porting job per Dyno Joe. I have a 400 that's ported/muffler modded and I agree with Mr. Novice: it's the best "do all saw" with no competitors. Now, my favorite saw is the 550 XP Mkii, but if I could have one, it would be my 400.

They shaved 3/4 of a pound off could have just run a shorter bar to save that
