What’s up guys and gals, I’m Kage848. I love to make videos for KZbin, mostly early access survival games like 7 Days to Die, Empyrion, Raft, Mist Survival, The Forest, and more! I also dabble in City Builders and strategy games like Civilization 5, Civilization 6, Dawn of Man, Stonehearth, Factorio and Rim World. I do at least two videos everyday of mainly tutorials, let’s plays and general gameplay footage. Thanks for watching my videos.

[Warning: I kind of wrote more than a few sentences in my excitement here. It's just me not containing my admiration of people in earlier centuries. Read at your own risk🙂] I never cease to be amazed whenever I see the long stretches of stone walls/fences running across pastures and through rough terrain and forests. I live in the westernmost part of Norway, and walls like these can be found almost everywhere as long as the population density is not too high. Many of them have probably stood for a century, or several, and they still stand there serving as a reminder of the hard working people who called these areas their home. When I pay attention to the level of craftmanship evident in these structures, as well as their size and reach, I can't help but be in awe of the people who made them. And to think that they were often a byproduct of sorts, while the real aim was to clear the pastures and fields of rocks that surfaced due to how the soil shifts while it freezes and thaws.. Of course, stone fences served as landmarks and borders between properties as well as a means to keep livestock under control and predators at a distance. Very useful, but also incredibly challenging and time consuming to build. Which reinforces my admiration of how people incorporated the making of such structures into the more "essential" parts of farmwork, like tilling the soil and clearing new plots of land. I should also mention that rocks were used to create other things like foundations for buildings, as well as bridges and roads - the last ones being literal lifesavers in a region consisting mostly of mountains, hills, valleys and rivers. Personally, I especially enjoy the sight of narrow stone roads crawling up steep hillsides. I mean, someone built those roads using their bare hands and simple, non-mechanic tools! There were no excavators or tractors, and access to available workers was probably limited in most cases. Nonetheless, roads and bridges were built - as were walls, fences and other structures that still stand to this day. If that is not worthy of respect, I don't know what is.

I hope they add worker housing which means 4/4 workes will sleep and live there and no hanky panky :) We can move them into family housing for breeding. Also I was told that if you have an empty house NPCs sometimes decide to move in with each other for family/baby.

I think the devs should change it so that any people born in your community are "free" and don't count toward the recruitment limit, so they're bonus people. Also, once they're children they should be able to do some of the simple jobs, like picking berries, mushrooms, etc.

Farming: You plant FLAX in the spring. It will be ready to harvest in the summer, when you plant CABBAGE. That will be ready in the Fall, when you plant RYE. RYE will be ready to harvest in the spring, when you can start the cycle all over again. That way you can collect all 3 items from the same field, only thing is that I’m not sure you can set it up for automation. I’m still doing it all by hand as I find it relaxing, like some people do with fishing.

Recent Updates to game: Fixes - Cave mining now increases the Extraction skill instead of the Crafting skill. - Removing tree stumps now works with a shovel. Stumps should now be gone permanently. - It is impossible to destroy the fence without building at least one module. It is now fixed. *- NPCs used to stop working in the field when the player did not watch them. They now have a better work morale.* - If a torch burned out, it decreased the health of (an)other torch(es). This is fixed as well. - Fixed the management building production list showing less items per hour than it produced. - Quests where you could deliver items in parts and had to deliver more than one type of item should work properly now. - Fixed projectiles like spears, bolts and arrows getting stuck in the air after hitting an animal.

The population fix would be for kids not to take up population space until they reach 18 years of age at which point they would either find work with their family in the village or go travel into the nearest town to learn a trade so would effectively leave your town. Not to mention the fact that kids in the medieval period would do a lot of work around the house/farm. This could be translated into game-play as an efficiency multiplier for the working parents in the house-hold. This would make keeping kids a lot more worth-while and seen as a huge advantage for the village as it would be in the medieval period.
@retroas2683
@retroas2683 3 жыл бұрын
I really hope that kids get a rework so babies do not take space. Would be nice also to have them being able to work at 10(and counting them as citizen) with a bonus to gaining skills at higher rate than adults(like, they can get high levels by working on different jobs, but having low levels to start with and overal debuff to productivity due to being a child, and adults having a harder time learning) and making 18 the point where they lose the bonus and start being counted as a population. Women are already unable to work once they get a kid, so it's better to make it worth the time investment by boosting both parents overall happiness permanently (because they have a family) and making kids op for 18 years they have to take to fully mature. kids being able to train to the level of godhood in skills while growing would be worth the wait.
@chrisrawr6177
@chrisrawr6177 3 жыл бұрын
If they are going to lock houses into have dedicated child slots then they should not take up space in your settlement at all even if they did work before turning 18. As it stands you lose a good worker for nearly three years due to motherhood as well as another who spends 18 years sucking down resources and giving you nothing in return and even worse according to discord at 18 the kids leaves you settlement and becomes a wanderer you have to hire.
@martinitland
@martinitland 3 жыл бұрын
@Kage848 - Regarding the settlement workforce: I just realized this in the beginning of the episode: You were talking about how you were okay with yourself and your wife having a kid, but not your workers. And it got me thinking about your heir.. If you constantly kick out people trying to start families, who will be left to work for your kid when you grow old and die? All of your workers are around your age, give or take a few years, so your son will have to recruit new workers on his own and level them from the beginning just like his dad. As you've said several times so far in your playthrough: this game is surprisingly deep, and from what I have seen it will pay off really well in the long run to keep the families around. Not only does the married couples seem a lot happier than the single workers, but in the long run they will provide your settlement - and therefore your heir - with young workers that are already tied to the place. They will have their whole lives in front of them, which is ideal for finetuning their skills in certain areas. I think that is a big part of what the blessings of a rich heritage is all about in a setting like this. (Also, from an immersive point of view: Wouldn't it be terribly boring for your heir to grow up as the only child in the settlement? And thouroughly heartless to kick out the people who seems the most dedicated to the growth of your dynasti? If they're comfortable enough to settle down and have children, you can be dead certain that they are aiming to bring the place as far along as possible.)

2:57 Villagers grow old and die. You'll need enough people for your village, town, city to be sustainable. This includes villagers having kids so that you don't have to keep running around recruiting new people when your villagers grow old and die. 6:50 Those 16x16 fields will probably only come into play much later as your village grows. And thank goodness it is now updated so that your workers "now have a better work morale" and should work even while you're not watching them. 18:56 I agree, notice how it's more like there are small fences on the left (Tier I, II, III) and on the right there are the outer defensive walls to protect your village (Log Fence=Tier I wall, Palisade=Tier II wall), but then Stone Fence=Tier IV fence.

7:10 I like that name "Zygfryd", probably East-European (the developpers are Polish). In German it's "Siegfried", a traditional name in Germany. I don't know if the name exists in English too. In my opinion - I am not a language expert, but quite good in languages - those names used in the game work quite well for a medieval Central-Europe. I recently read an Old-English poem of the 14th century and noticed, that the English of that time was quite close to the Middle-High-German of the same time. You'll notice even more the close connections between English and German, both Germanic languages. Ok, English has as well Viking, Gaelic and Norman (French) parts, but the majority of the words are of Germanic origin.

Just roll with the family stuff. Basically when you enlist someone, they'll decide who to move in with. It's probably based on factors we can't see, which is cool with me. You actually don't need that many workers anyway, 5 or so can cover all your needs. I feel like its a cool mechanic, I was annoyed with it at first, but it's grown on me. The game isn't "realistic" but I like the limitations it puts on you, in real life a lord would not be arraigning marriages (outside their own family). Kids are going to happen.

Usually in eastern Europe (where I guess the people in the game are technically from) the people don't have fences around their farming fields. Some have, but that's usually only if they have an orchard. The fields were left open, so that people going around with their animals could also go there, after they finished getting their crops, or before they had any. Some have fences if they want to keep their animals in there, at least over winter they keep them on their own property. Somehow I liked the fences until now, but I think it makes more sense without it, like the real people kept it, and the big fields also look better that way, in comparison with the small ones. Of course, play the game as you like. 😁

Could there be a reason for having your villagers have kids though? Like do the children have skills derived from their parents skills? If so then children may be a way to get villagers with higher skill than those you could recruit from outside the villagers.

Population is only limited by housing and kids will live with their parents so you can get 4/4 in a house instead of 2, plus they're only mothers for 2 years. It's really the best way to grow your population, it just takes too long for them to grow up and start working.

The game will not allow you to manually move someone in with another person of the same gender. The only way for you to have same gender only housemates is to recruit the same gender back to back with an empty house available and no other slots available in other houses. You can however, when you are ready for them to have kids, manually move male in with female and vice versa.

The reason you can't move them is because the girl is pregnant. They may not be married yet but the game locks them together. You can tell when someone is pregnant if their mood is 5% higher than what it is normally, the father's mood will have the same 5% boost. I disagree that the family factor is not a valid mechanic. It is absolutely a mechanic. It is the only "hardship" included in the game at this point. Nothing other than that element makes it challenging, not to mention it is a "life simulator".

@@marcusaurilius5127 This would be nice to have a builder/maintenance worker aka you put the plot down and choose the materials if required and the ai comes along and puts them in from your resource storage. At year 6 myself and putting down a tier 2 stone/wood house has got old quick with the 10 or so trips to the resource shed to grab logs/rocks thus i would be fine with the ai doing it even if it took days for them to complete.

@@marcusaurilius5127 The thing this game does good is the ai automation of gathering and crafting as most games like this either don't have it thus you are forced to do everything no matter how far you are in the game or they do it very poorly. Endgame is a problem every survival crafter game seems to have but honestly this has been a week out of early access meanwhile games that have been milking the EA/beta train for 5+ years still cannot figure out an endgame.

The problem is settlers having children is all negatives for the player aka you lose a good worker for nearly 3 years and have a useless eater for 18 years who according to discord leaves your settlement at 18 and becomes a wanderer you would have to recruit. Kids should be a bonus you want to happen and imo the best way would be they should take no population spot and start working at around 8 for low end jobs like gatherers and livestock (which currently is not worth having other workers do) and then in their teens work a real job and at 18 you get a highly skilled worker who then takes a population spot and needs a house of their own (not realistic as up until about 100 years ago most families have multiple generations under a single roof but still for gameplay it would encourage you to keep expanding).

No one’s thought yet that your heir needs options to marry and work for them when that time comes?? The kids stats may be generated from both parents, so the same with the villagers?? If a mom and pop are 5 and 7 in farming, wouldn’t the kid’s stay in farming be 7 or better??

I propose the following for a solution to the children in villages until the devs fix them taking a population slot (which is BS). This can only be done when starting a new game. Build all npc houses as the small one and make it out of stone so you never have to make them homeless. Then when recruiting people always get two of the same sex and fill houses with two guys or two gals. Never make them homeless and repeat this forever and boom no kids except ur own. I'm not sure if two dudes will share a house after year 5 or not but I would assume they will.

Ya but those peeps were already there right? I think if you add two of the same sex at a time they won’t switch. You can test it by getting all your haouses filled and then make a new one then recruit two men or women and see if they shack up together. Then make another house and recruit one person that is opposite sex if the two living together and see if the one of the two in the same sex house swaps over to the new house. I know what you’re thinking but this should prove or disprove my theory

Kicking them out could make get'n new worker harder because it could damage your rep (so to speak) Also, and like you I know it is just a game but....would you want your boss telling you who you could or couldn't date, hook up with or married to? And I was wondering...your building limit is 25 now so why not put up a house or two so when you do get a new worker you don't have to go back and build the house, then go back and get the worker and it leaves you some room to put up other building if you have to.. It just seems like it would save you a bit of time. Any ways....enjoying the vids....keep up the good work. Peace!

Question: Do you have to pay for each square of farm that you harvest or if you harvest anything at all, do you get hit with the taxes as if you planted a full harvest.(Basically do I pay the same taxes for harvesting one square of a 9x9 verses 81 squares of a 9x9). If the taxes are dependent on squares then when I start the game , I am gonna place all my farms beforehand and the plan my town around that. Great video as always Kage, if you haven't yet, Paulsoares started up a cool minecraft-esque survival game that I've also really enjoyed.

You should definitely put farmland down first. I regret not doing that on my current game. I'm not sure how to answer your question, other than taxes are based on what you plant and harvest. My taxes one spring were 2100, but due to a bug I had to reload to winter. I forgot to harvest some wheat and in spring they were 1500 or 1600.
