Years ago we had a fire, Our ins comp gave us $1000. to be able to live somewhere while the Ins was being settled, here is what we did with the $1000. we bought a used mobile home ( actually quite livable) and had it set up on our property during the house repairs which was a major undertaking! We were sooo glad that we did that because we had to be at the property so much of the time anyway, we had animals and it was almost planting season! It may not be possible to do this in certain area's, as townships, county's etc. have different codes. but was not a problem for us to do that temporarily and we didn't have any problem selling the mobile home when we moved back into our house. A moblie home would, of course, be roomier and more 'house' like' than an RV.

They sell already made sheds floor, roof, 4 walls, I live in one 24x24, we turned it into a cabin. you can have all your friends that build help you, and when it is done you can live in it until house is ready! That way your still on farm, taking care of animals and when your house is ready you have a guest cabin, or outdoor kitchen, or a place you can edit videos, or classroom, etc. just a thought!

To all saying "just tear it down" "burn it" "build new" "buy a mobile home".... I know that to many it seems to just make sense to tear it down and start over. But it is not that simple. And I think it is very wise of Art and Bri to consider all the options, to talk to experts, and to friends with experience in building and remodeling. To take the time to make sure they are using this blessing wisely and doing the best they can for their family. We are not in their shoes. I am sure there are things to consider they havent shared with us for privacy reasons, or have downplayed the seriousness of. I dont know the prices in their area. But I can pretty much guarentee that $65k will NOT build a new house from the ground up. To rebuild in the exact same location, they will still have to do the water diversion, grading the hill behind the house, adding a bulk head and french drains to keep water from sitting against a foundation or flooding a basement. If they move the location of the house, they will have to also install new septic and drain field. They will have to have new power lines and electrical boxes installed. Converting the barn into a temp home, would cost almost the same as building in a new location. They would have to have septic and drain fields installed, and power brought in. New mobile homes can cost anywhere from $100k to $300k. That is just the beginning of the cost. There is trucking fees to have the pieces brought to you. Fees to have them offloaded. Fees to have them leveled, and tied together. Fees to have the utilities, water, power, sewer hooked up to the mobile home systems. These fees can add up to an additional $20k in my area. Buying an older mobile home for just a few thousand like many have suggested is dicey for health reasons. Many of those older mobile homes contain building materials that might irritate asthma and other breathing issues. Many contain mold, so they would have to have the tests done and possible remediation. Many, because of having settled in their previous location, wont be perfectly level, so you may have leakage issues which would cause future mold issues. As for tearing down or burning the farmhouse? Yes it is true that many fire depts would love the opportunity for a training fire, but due to the level of mold they might well decline this one. As Bri mentioned in another video, burning could well put the spores into the air and make others sick as well. You cannot always just tear down a moldy home. It frequently requires a remediation team. Or special trained demo teams. They tent the building, fog or spray to neutralize the mold, and take it down by hand, putting all the materials into closed dumpsters. This is a costly process. Bri loves research. She is very diligent. This has been demonstrated time and again in reguards to their livestock. Art also does research. They both take the time to consider the information and decide together how to procede. This community rallied together to give them this huge blessing because everyone believes in Art and Bri and loves their family. Now as a community, ya'll need to give them a few moments to breathe, pray, do their research, consult experts, and do what is best for their family.
@jeffjohnson59085 жыл бұрын
These people are so fucked. The new stuff that they remediate or remodel will eventually become moldy just like their car and house. They do not know anything about contamination and the mold spores will have an already have spread all over the entire house I don't know why are thinking that this is just going to end up being clean job and just going to clean the house one time and it'll all be gone, mold doesn't work like that, it's going to float in the air for weeks and land on everything new that they buy and create for the house. Every clean surface will be re contaminated with their old mold because the professional cleaners cannot clean the air. You will see eventually that the only way to truly get rid of this problem is to build a new house and get rid of the old one, or move with your newfound wisdom.

It makes totally sense. We did a whole home gut and renovation a few years ago after finding issues in our home. We actually had three giant nests of hornets living in the wall and tons of water damage from leaky windows because our home was built in the '50's. It looked like we had fire in the walls because there was so much damage. As we went along, all kinds of issues were uncovered and we were thankful we did the whole gut and reno. I felt like we were on a design show when they break open walls and find all kinds of issues. That was us. We ended up moving in with my inlaws while my husband did 90% of the work himself. It took a few years for us to move back home because my husband's job was so demanding and he couldn't often work on our house. We couldn't afford to hire out so bit by bit, he chipped away at it. I'm so grateful for our home now even though we still have projects to do. Unfortunately things just cost so much more as we came across more issues. But now I know our home is safe and picking out all of the features of our home was so fun for me (I love to decorate). Please know you are in my prayers because I know this journey all too well. Nothing prepares you to see your belongings in a sea-can (and have mice eat your stuff because somehow they got in) or to stand in your front doorway and to look directly into your backyard because there is no wall. We tore down every outside wall and rebuilt it along with putting in a new bathroom and kitchen because they had to be fixed. Keep the end in mind when it gets difficult because it will. But as I sit in my home now, I'm so grateful that we did the hard things to make it safe for us. Praying for you guys - for strength and wise decisions. I'm so glad you have so many people in your corner who will help make this a beautiful house of love.

Here's a random thought...what about putting in a Yurt on the property? Fit Farmer (Mike Dickson) and his family lives out of one, pretty modest in price, and once everything's done with the renovations/remediation, you'll have a "guest" house, or something that could be used about a hundred different ways for the farm. This way, you'll have something to move into pretty quickly, stay on the property to oversee the reno and the farm, and its a longer term improvement to the farm than just borrowing or buying an RV to park somewhere.

This could give you the workspace below which may eliminate the need to remove floors that may be perfectly good, provide adequate ventilation with fixed vents or operable windows, provide some storage area and bring your foundation up to current building codes. I also would look into a temporary mobile home on your property. I did this many years ago while building a house and sold it for $500 above what it cost me.

Remove mold & rot of floors, walls & retain what's good or rebuild an open construction dwelling, to start with. If you put in a geothermal system, laid out at a 6' depth, on a gravel bed, you'll have free heating & cooling for the rrst of your lives there. Add a solar hot water heater & enough solar for circulating fans, energy for home lighting, & use a wood or gas cooking stove, your ongoing costs would be minimal.

When things are done make sure you have air circulation under the house to help prevent any further mold issues. Our prayers are with you and we will be sending some financial help for several months. I have a house that is partially love built... until I ran out of money for supplies. It is a real blessing.

The house that love built is perfect. Jeff, at Bobblehead Homestead in Arkansas had "The Tiny House that Love Built" for his tiny cabin conversion and it turned out absolutely awesome. I'm sure y'all's will be just as awesome even though it will take longer. God bless y'all and keep you in perfect peace.

I am glad that you are considering renovating. New materials have their own set of possible problems (like the formaldehyde off gassing in the Katrina FEMA trailers, which folks were living in to avoid mold from their severely damaged homes). I'm glad that an old-timer could assess the strength of your home. You just can't build them like they used to; the type of wood isn't even available anymore. And you can't build charm (imo) like a an older home has. I hope that you can jack your home up some to help. I live in a pre-Civil War home and prefer restoration to remodeling; I regret some of the stuff we "upgraded". But you guys are asking for and receiving good counsel and that will make the enormous project a success. God Speed.

Praise God, so glad for the way this has progressed, glad for the time that you are taking to do it thoughtfully, carefully...adding equity is so cool!!! Praying that God continues to guide your steps, provides a home while you work, lifts you above the worry by His grace, His mercy, and as you said, trust in His wisdom and timing, not rushing, God bless.

I love seeing the kids (not meaning the goat ones); so it was wonderful seeing Brighton planting at the beginning of this video, Joyful passing behind you and acknowledging us viewers so discretely and their laughter in the car was absolutely musical. This is why I love your special family so much. "Suffer the children to come unto me, for of such is the kingdom of Heaven."

I would stay on the property, and not wanting to live in an RV for 8 months I understand, but you might have to humble yourself. I need a home, but I want land. want / need. Your extremely fortunate to have the support of your community. Sounds like your doing everything you can. Now give the rest to God. My Family and I do not have any money at all or we would help. So we will pray for you guys, I would help you in person but I live in Montana and don't have any money to travel, PRAYER Dear Lord Jesus, please take this situation and craft a solution as you see fit, Let it benefits your children who are in need, We thank you Dear God for the blessings from the community and ask you to keep providing the needs, we don't always understand your answers to our prayers but are forever grateful for your blessings for Art and Bri. This will be a long journey of recovery and rebuilding there life. WE ask you to keep walking with them, comfort them and guide them. Thank you in advance for all of this and for everything you will provide. In Jesus name, Amen!

I was so sad about the mold situation in your house that I didn't watch for about a week. I just tuned in tonight and it looks like many prayers are being answered. Well praise God. Your sweet family and the life you are trying to build together are easy to care about and pray about. We will all keep praying. It will surely be okay because God cares for His own.

Such a heavy heart for you all. The Scriptures are clear that with mold, you burn it all. Hard to imagine, but so worth it in the end. We had mold in our systems from visiting two different places that had terrible mold inside. We were so sick and didn’t know why. Finally we went to Longevity Health Center in Roswell Georgia, and they were able to rid our bodies of the mold Through homeopathics (they do bio energetic testing there to diagnose issues).. It took me four months and it took the kids to months To get better. Mold is so serious! 🙏🏼💕

We've done a large stale DIY remodel (with permits). I would LOVE to watch this happen! Our renovation lasted from Mid Feb till November. It was live-able and useable in July. I hope you take the time to research and prepare and decide on the best option for YOU! You've got this!

When we lost our house to a fire, we had a mobile home brought onto our property so I could be there helping with the rebuilding which actually knocked 40,000 off of the price.

So glad you aren't going to tear down your house, I love old farm houses, and you said yourself, that guy told you that your house was built right, good . You can still make it how you want it... Continue to pray, God will show you what to do. And take care of you! Just keep telling him, I trust you Lord!

I am so glad the financial help has come. I was glad to see your faces this morning. If it was me I’d go with the house that love built and never look back, but as you say you have to think it over. I agree. Do what’s best for your family and I wish you the best!

Debbie Danner I agree...I’d do a rebuild on another area of the property’s land. Maybe check for water level spots and get some serious ground survey work done..then do a new totally rebuild. We’ve just finished a new place here in the UK... You have to get it right .

I can relate to everything that you are going through and surely know that I have been and always will be praying for you! I’m so happy this community was able to come together and help your family! You guys have given so much to us through sharing your lives it’s nice that as a community we can give something back to you guys! Also have you guys heard of arched cabins? They are based out of here in Texas, we are getting one of the bigger models and will be building it come this spring on our future homestead. It’s really affordable and durable and if you guys get a smaller model you could live in it while things are getting done and then have it as a guest house!
@thebluecottage99525 жыл бұрын
Also the one we are building will be our permanent home so if you want to completely rebuild they are also very affordable!

Buy a cheap mobile home and move it on the property. You can tie the water and septic into your existing systems at a very low cost. Power too. Live in it more comfortably than an RV and much, much cheaper than rent. Plus you’re one the farm. You can get one for 5000 or less. Then when you’re done with the house, sell the trailer and recoup most if not all of what you paid for it. Or keep it as a guest house!

Good to hear from you guys. I would really consider doing a large shed renovation. If you put it in the right spot you could even turn it into an outdoor kitchen and storage area after you are done. That would add a valuable work station for canning and many other uses plus and more equity to your homestead. Love and prayers

Recent subscriber after finding you thru the Hollars and Rhodes. Get your home fixed and if any money is left over, start a fund for other homesteaders who might need help in the future. I’m not a homesteader (wish I was) but think this would be a great way to share back with the community that helped you. God bless....

It sounds like you guys have a good handle on everything. Renovating your home is a great decision. The RV idea is a good one. It will be much more convenient being on your farm and the kids won't be so confused with dislocation. Also---that giant playhouse of a barn will make a great kitchen. Y'all can do it!!
@VannaWhiteboard5 жыл бұрын
Yes! That makes complete sense. You can double the value of your property and home by upgrading the dwelling. And you can do it affordably with local reclaimed and eco-sustainable materials. Obtain the best grade of your most used appliances, for example--get one of those all in one washer/dryers--they exist!, make sure you have food storage that is mold resistant, I bet you can have solar power for a good part of the year...

Glad you are at least considering a new build. Yurts will not hold value over years. A temporary trailer could be used later for other purposes or sold. But has to be living ready. Ask both sets of your parents what they would do. They have a long year perspective. Praying for wisdom for you. Art, hope you don't give up nursing completely. I'm glad I kept my license and eventually enjoyed another stent in a different field of nursing. 67 yrs old, Ohio

@Opy Brook Water always flows downhill, and by the easiest route possible. That’s the basic concept behind a French drain, a slightly sloped trench filled with round gravel and a pipe that diverts water away from your house.

I’m so happy you have options! As a toxic black mold survivor and carbon monoxide survivor...I’d level your home build a lovely pole barn structure . Have concrete floors with a heated system in the floor... you can build that structure ensure no more mold problems in the future. That’s what I did . Stay safe dear ones❤️
