Great video. As an EQA 250 + owner I would 100 % agree with your comments. Leave the bag at home and the cable will fit under the boot floor. Car is really quiet and if you stick in eco mode and drive carefully in reasonable wearther you really can get near 300 miles. I’d Bath to Plymouth and back without a charge and still have near 20% charge. Summary a great car which is just a bit too expensive.

Yes I worked out that you can fir the cable in the plastic moulding under the boot floor as well. It's a fiddle though and to be honest, it's one of the few negatives. I would thought that Mercedes could come up with a way of to store the cable other than in a container that moves around in the boot. Skoda supply a net that fits under the parcel shelf which is neater

Let me tell you Nick of an experience this week of my friend who is a lecturer at at a Scottish College. His first time in a fully electric car as follows: He is scheduled to attend a heat pump corse in East Kilbride. The college gave us an electric car (70 plate Nissan leaf acenta) to get here and back and to travel to the course to and from the hotel. I fully charged it on Friday past before I left the college it was showing 100% when I left the college with a range of 154 miles. I drove it 0.9 miles to my house and it dropped to 144miles. Jumped in it Monday still had 144miles on it. Got to the shell garage just past Auchterarder (30ish miles from my house) and it was down to 68miles. Tried to charge it at 2 separate chargers at the shell/starbucks that is there. Charge card wouldn’t work or charger not suited to our car/card. Had to go to Dunblane, only ‘fast’ chargers available. Plugged it in and went for a cup of tea for 1/2 hr. Came back and it was at 78miles. Made the college with 16 miles left in the battery. Took 2hrs 50mins to do 80 miles. Arrived late for our renewable energy course because of a renewable energy vehicle. Charged it all afternoon Monday and all morning yesterday at a ‘fast’ charger to get it up to 100%. What a way to get around. It is far from relaxing not knowing the real mileage of the car and not knowing if the charger will work or accept your card if you actually make it to one. Not for me. That was his experience in detail. Now taking that fur ther to the demise of EV car sales. EV car owners on pcp are now starting to return their cars back to the garages to get a new one with about 300 mile range, but the 3 year old car they are returning is capable of 30 miles. Now garages rely on second Hand car sales. So who wants to buy a second hand with a car with a 30 mile range and the battery out of warranty. Answer no one. Only answer is to give extended warranty on batteries. Otherwise the second hand market on EV is going nowhere. Plus there is no compatibility with charging points. Credit Cards not accepted, cables and cars not compatible.

I would say that your very poor experience is not at all representative of what you would get with a modern and well designed EV
@npoleary

I’m not pointing fingers here (well I kind of am) but for a college just to throw an EV to someone without any tips or guides is the wrong way to go about it. I used to work for a car dealer quite sometime ago now and it took a very careful way to explain to people and teach things to look out for with an EV. I even trained new sales people who had zero experience with EV’s and the insights they gained from it were extremely valuable. Yes. EV’s are different, they have pros and cons. EV’s unlock cheaper motoring given the right circumstances. However go in blind without knowing how public charging works, some have contactless payments, some don’t. Going in blind as to how a range reading works on a car creates a term range anxiety. Take your example of travelling 0.9 miles and it dropping 10 miles. Depends on so so many factors and context is very important here. What you’ve described can be completely normal. If the heating is put on, this can cause the range to drop. Turn it off and it’ll shoot back up. Or the opposite with A/C. The range on car is constantly adjusting and will predict what range you will get. As I said they have their pros and cons, but if I still worked for a dealer, I would never just throw someone the keys to an EV and not explain some key pointers to look out for. It can and will put them off an EV for years. They have their pros and cons, and it can fit certain driver profiles and lifestyles. Some cars and their multimedia systems do an incredible job with the car and the charging experience combined. Tesla is a very good example hence why I made the comparison to it in this video. Mercedes me charge eliminates the issue with public charging too. And finally for your example of 300 mile range car quoting 30 miles? That cannot be right. If it is then quite simply something is not working somewhere, I have never seen an EV do that so that would need looking at by someone. A 30 mile range sounds like what a plug-in hybrid would do.
@colinnicol9447

Yes get your point, but would you buy an EV just come back from a customer on a 4 year pcp, the car is out of warranty and I assume the battery. I think something has to change in the sales of EV’s in that when you go to a dealer to buy a second hand car. The most valuable info is the year of the car and its mileage, that is important. If it’s got 25000 miles or 125000 on it is definitely going to influence your decision. Now in a sales room selling EV’s I think you need the same type of info. Mileage and the state of the battery in percentage. Who wants a car with 20% left in the battery. Yes by all means purchase a new EV and drive it under warranty, but out of warranty ?
@npoleary
@npoleary Ай бұрын
Yes I would. The battery warranty is 8 years 🤓 Mercedes on some models even offer 10 year warranty. All batteries degrade over time yes that’s a fact but they are lasting as long as an engine would

@@npoleary Yes, Nick, I totally agree with what you are saying. Daily rental car companies made the same big mistake of buying thousands of EV's to put into their fleets of rentals cars. This did not go well at all and in many cases they ended up dumping the EVs back onto the market with huge losses. The problem was that many of the customers who rented these thought this was a good opportunity to experience an EV for the first time. In most cases the company staff didn't know what they were doing either and sent the poor uneducated customer off onto the road without adequate instructions, written or otherwise, on how to work an EV. Needless to say this did not go well and a bad experience was had by all. Recently, I spent many text messages instructing a very intelligent good friend of mine how to use a Tesla that he rented for a week (at my suggestion). He was given no instruction by the rental car company and I had to explain A LOT of things to him to get him through the trip.

Hi Nick, another great video. I have owned an EQA 250+ AMG Line since July. The car is fantastic. Previous gasoline cars BMW and Chevrolet. For all those who compare it with other EVS, American or Chinese, you should know that before you buy a car, you try the rest, as in my case. The EQA 250+ is quiet, comfortable to drive, long range (550 km with air conditioning continuously in hot Athens), very good acceleration/active safety, excellent brakes and a very good and direct MBUX system. In Greece we say "you get what you pay for", time will prove the reliability of each machine. Until then, happy driving

I bought the EQA plus AMG and I love it. I'm averaging about 300 miles range in mixed driving. I know where you tried your 0 to 62 test as I live locally ( Stoney Cross) and I think there may be a slight downward gradient at that point and the acceleration to get on to the A31 is handy as there's a very short slip road! The adaptive cruise control is very helpful.

@robertlegrice1
@robertlegrice1 Ай бұрын
Depends on the type of journey. Latterly I've been doing a lot of motorway journeys with a few short local ones where it's about 3.3 miles per KWH. That's keeping to 70mph mostly, in about 5 to 10 degrees at night so with lights and heat on. Until then since new I mainly did local and country lanes at much slower speeds, the weather was warmer and mainly during the day and I was still seeing what would happen if I drove economically and I averaged exactly 4 miles per KWH (sadly I kept a spread sheet for the first 1000 miles!) Whilst not lightening fast, compared to my old 2011 A Class 180 diesel, the acceleration in the EQA is great especially from low speed.

Great video Nick as always. I'm several months into my 250+ Premium ownership and former GLA owner. @npoleary
@npoleary Ай бұрын
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it! I’ve seen that and here’s my honest take. It depends on your mindset. I’ll probably make a video about it soon! I saw the announcement of this (this started to appear just after I got my car last year). So you can either pay for the Driving Assistance Package priced at £1,495 which includes: Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC and many other functions that assist that system such as Active Steering Assist / PRE-SAFE etc to name a few. For one it’s an amazing package, I wish every car had it but because we as drivers in the UK are driven by a monthly figure (in most cases) it’ll push the price up significantly. Mercedes have now brought out this new subscription thing which lets you subscribe to this service but most importantly it is a fraction of the cost. (I can’t remember how much it is off the top of my head as I don’t own a car with it.) And another key important note it doesn’t include all of the features the driving assistance package has. It just the distance assist function. It is far more cost effective just to get this for the year if that’s all you need. Most only want that anyway and don’t want the steering assist etc. It’s an interesting take, and when I do make a video on it, I want to dive into it deeper. Everyone will have their own take and own thresholds as to what would be acceptable for subscriptions in a car. - Live Traffic Subscription each year? (Most are okay with this) - Heated Seat subscription each year? (Most are not okay with this) I could talk about this topic for hours…everyone has different thresholds though.
@D3fiant
@D3fiant Ай бұрын
@@npoleary You have a fair point, looking at the app I can pay £13 a month for active distance assist distronic, £130 for 12m or £310 for 36m so likely cheaper than buying it outright for the duration Im likely to have the car.

I drive an EQB 250+ AMG line premium. It’s a great car but it seems Mercedes took some stuff out to bring the price down. No crucial things, but they have to watch out they don’t get passed by Chinese EVs. What is brilliant is the Satnav and the EQ menu. The indication of the kW left of the bar graph indicates at what speed you can charge maximum at that moment. When you put a charger in the satnav as destination, the car will condition the battery. You can then see if you have reached the optimal loading speed yet. And loading is “just” 100 kW, but it is 100 kW almost all of the time. Even at 80% + it maintains a respectable charging speed. Mercedes doesn’t brag, they surprise by delivering more than promised. Like the acceleration….

In my opinion the electrics look better than the petrol/diesel equivalents for Mercedes (albeit the EQE and EQS Saloon). I have an EQB 250+ and the Patagonia red looks sooo good with the night package! One thing to note is the range is not very good! My fav regen mode is "Intelligent Recuperation" as it brakes for you if you get too close to the car ahead and at roundabouts etc. but coasts when there are no cars in front and when you lift off the accelerator. ALSO LOVE THE GRILLE!

Thank you! I use the analogy that when we set up a Christmas tree we have a timer plug to control the lights. Same goes for EV’s, the charger is the one that will do this. Especially ones like the one I have, this integrates with my electricity tariff directly. No car manufacturer’s multimedia system could do this. It’s down to the charger to offer that smart functionality. However, to add to your comment, yes it is a bonus if the car can also do this.

@npoleary
@npoleary 4 күн бұрын
Thank you! I can’t remember exactly from that car but I don’t think it did. Augmented Reality has never been standard from what I’ve seen, it’s sometimes an option on one of the premium packages. However Mercedes do change the specs throughout the year which is one of the reasons why I don’t get involved in it. I just liaise with my local dealer for a car if they have one and / or the Mercedes Press office in the UK. Sadly I wouldn’t know the reason, you’ll have to ask someone who works for them but it could be price (to be competitive with other brands), availability or could be something completely different. I wish I could go through everything on a car when I get it but I want my videos to appeal to a wide audience so I just review the car and briefly go over options. That’s how I’ve done it for years. I’d be curious to know any other reason why specs are adjusted though! 🤓🙏

We have a tax that inflicts all the decent quality ev’s in Australia called the ‘luxury car tax’. @npoleary
@npoleary Ай бұрын
They are very close, however if you push the sound system you can hear the door will vibrate. Quite normal on every car out there, but when you have a branded sound system, they also add dampening so that the sound only comes out of the grille and doesn’t “bleed” into the door causing a vibration. If you listen to it on average volumes you won’t notice. But the branded sound systems also do pack more of a punch 👍🏼
@BladeBucko
@BladeBucko Ай бұрын
Please Nick can you look into the recalibration problem with the rear camera.
@npoleary
@npoleary Ай бұрын
So I actually spoke to Mercedes about this after I had this car as I noticed it too. Previously it was mentioned that it popped out to expose the image ready to show on screen. However I’ve been informed now that all new models may do this and it’s actually part of a calibration process. Now this calibration process isn’t for the camera or camera housing. It’s for some of the safety systems at the rear of the car. Although Mercedes didn’t disclose what safety systems they are, I’m assuming it’s “Drive Away Assist” or Crossing traffic” or maybe “Active Blind Spot Assist” calibration. Basically it will do this “up to and around a couple of minutes based on conditions” (this is the total amount of time the camera is popped out). So over the course of heavy traffic going above 14mph and back down below again this may happen a quite a few times over the course of a journey. But once that threshold has been reached, it won’t calibrate anymore. One thing to note though is that if the car is switched off and back on, the calibration process will start again.
@donaldsivewright903
@donaldsivewright903 Ай бұрын
My A class has the same constant camera calibration issue and it is very annoying. One thing to recognise, especially as we are now into winter, is that the camera cannot complete the calibration in low light situations so will be opening and closing all of the time rather than for a limited number of times each time the car is started. This then gets beyond annoying and almost makes the car unusable due to the constant noisy camera operation. An absolutely useless design by MB and if I were to be looking at another MB car this would be a deal breaker.

I did recently a comparison of an EQA against the equivalent GLA. The EQA was around £12,000 more expensive than the GLA and based on 10,000 miles/annum with 3000 miles at public chargers and 7000 miles using cheap tariff home charging it would take about 17 years to recoup that initial higher purchase cost and maybe even more depending on depreciation. I also had a look at depreciation on various equivalent petrol v electric cars and found that after three years the electric cars had depreciated a lot more than the petrol ones to the point where that initial price differential had been wiped out and actually the electric version was actually now cheaper. Great for the second owner you might say but I suspect the rate of depreciation will continue to be worse for the electric car as it gets older as concerns about battery life increase and range starts to reduce. In my opinion electric cars are just not a viable option financially never mind range and charging concerns. Electric is a big, big no from me I’m afraid - it’s all a big con unless you are a company car driver and can put up with the range and charging issues.
@npoleary
@npoleary Ай бұрын
So cost of charging is a big factor but not the only factor why someone might want to change. Charging for £5 to do over 300 miles is pretty cool, but some may like other things: - Not ever visiting a petrol station again - Waking up with a “full tank” of fuel everyday - Pre-Heating or Pre-Cooling the car before use - Instantaneous Torque - Not producing emissions at the tailpipe - No ULEZ Charges or Congestion Charges - Statistically speaking, they are safer than ICE vehicles But you brought up a very good point, they are very expensive and fact…they depreciate faster too. So my advice, take advantage of that and buy one a year old (there or there abouts)

@@npolearyReasonable points and everyone is entitled to make their own decision but it doesn’t work for me as there are too many cons. The only possible benefit I see out of your list is cheaper home charging but my research indicates that these savings are completely wiped out and more by the high initial cost, depreciation and high public charging costs. The other thing I really don’t like is, once again, the Government is interfering in our purchase choices, as they did with diesel, purely for political point scoring without any real consideration for the practicalities of how mass EV use will work in practice or the effect it might have on the car manufacturing business - it’s just uneducated meddling.

Why would someone who has been buying from the brand for years or even decades suddenly have to pay 50-60% more for the exact same item? Inflation cannot justify this. It's like the brand is deceiving the consumer. On kislux , the bags sold are priced lower but of higher quality, so you might as well go there.

I absolutely hate the Mercedes console setup in the EQ range, so much so that when it was time to buy a new car, I have changed to another Brand, which tells you a lot, not to mention 25% additional cost for every day essentials, some of which should already be included as Encap Safety certification. Shame on Mercedes, Audi & BMW, I welcome the Chinese competition to destroy the Car Showroom Monopoly here in the UK. Next battle is Electric Vs Petrol price war is needed.

Correct me if I’m mistaken but I believe Mercedes have cancelled their entire EQ lineup. Depreciation will be savage. New battery tech and new motor tech is just around the corner. I’m sure it’s a typically premium Mercedes product but I would commit to any electric car yet.

Not true, they haven’t cancelled anything. But they are from the looks of it moving slightly (only slightly) away from the EQ branding. There’s one model that’s released since that change, what I thought was going to be an EQG turned out to be a “G580 with EQ technology.” I assume the CLA would follow the same naming but not heard anything that they’re dropping electric cars.

Costs of EV’s do vary out there, it’s one of the reasons when I went full time making videos on KZbin to include some other brands on my channel as well. Just gives a bit of variety. Buying a German car will make the price of a car go up (brand / build quality etc) But tag on an EV into that mix as well, then it pushes the price up further. If this is too much, take a look at my reviews of Tesla Model Y, Tesla Model 3, or even Volvo EX30. All very good cars in their own way. If you still wanted to stick with the Mercedes experience, there is also smart too, they sell smart #1 and smart #3. Far more affordable than the EQA.

Having reviewed the Tesla Model Y I can offer a comparison here: Tesla brilliant all rounder and I would have no problem recommend this as a first EV. Supercharger network is plug and play (literally) and it makes the whole ownership process so easy. But some may not like the one touchscreen that controls everything. As @paul-sd8vk hinted at, the ride is quite firm in the Tesla Model Y. Not a bad thing but for an SUV I would have expected it to be a little better so the EQA is much smoother. Tesla is faster, has more space (including a frunk) and cheaper. But it does not match the interior quality of the EQA. Mercedes have Mercedes me charge which comes close to the supercharger network so almost as good. The EQA also has CarPlay whereas Tesla do not. But it is always best to use the in built navigation especially with an EV. Direct links to chargers and estimated range make the experience on both very easy. Any more questions fire away below and I’ll help for either car 🤓🙏

@@npoleary in Australia the tesla network of superchargers is definately in the minority there are 4 setups of tesla across my entire state and just one in my capital city). The motoring organisations in each state are picking up the mantle, and my eqe is now plug and play on their very large and rapidly growing networks. I just plug in and walk away, same as the supercharger on my tesla. I usually charge at home with my excess solar power though.
