I think one thing that's so lovable about Daniel is that he's showing this pure concept: that you can be broken and imperfect but still bring your gifts and real feelings to the world unafraid and it's beautiful. It's something we can all connect with, and seeing him be imperfect but unashamed and giving it 100% is something that hits deep. In this age where people only share the side of them that's perfect, and wanting to hide what actually makes us unique, this guy's a saint.

I agree 100% that vulnerability is something that we should express. I also adamantly believe that just because you are vulnerable, that doesn't allow you a platform to express your very immature 'art' on. I'm aware that all art is subjectively personal, but I really believe his is rubbish (and I like very esoteric stuff, too). Don't praise somebody through and because of sentimentality. My neighbors apartment caught on fire due to old worn out electrical wiring and my apartment almost burned up before the firefighters put out the fire. I didn't go to the art festival or show, but as I was standing in the cold watching the firefighters cutting holes in the roof, Daniel Johnston walked by very quickly and nervously wearing a Daniel Johnston t-shirt, on the sidewalk that was crowded with people watching the fire. It was a very surreal experience. If anyone is familiar with Lousiville, my apartment was upstairs from De La Torre's and La Bodega.

I went to see him play last year and let me tell you, when he was playing, almost everybody had their faces soaked in tears. What i´m trying to say is that sometimes a great song don´t have to be much complex and sometimes it does (I mean, I love jazz, personally dave brubeck quartet). But as for Dan´s style I really feel his lyrics, his ways of playing the piano in "Held the Hand" for example. He is, without a doubt, one of my favourite composers, not by what he composes muscially, but for the way he makes me feel when he plays it. He puts all of himself in every song and that´s not something "...probably 1 million bed room musicians that are as good as this" can do

Rest Easy Daniel. Dan inspired me to pick up the guitar and sing even though I couldn't do either. Here I am almost 4 years later and I know that music is what I want to pursue, so thanks dan.

For some weird reason one of my favourite parts of this is in the closing bit, where someone asks if the cookie is still warm and Daniel gives a cheerful little laugh as he says it is. Can't put into words why I like that bit so much, but is just a nice little moment of happiness.

RIP Daniel. He was such an amazing song writer. I am real sad at the moment. So glad he performed on Tiny Desk.

One of the best things about Daniel's music is that he made every performance and rendition/recording so unique with his amazing style of artistry. He's one of the best artists to ever grace this world with his presence, I love how unique he is and his personality is infectious to love

Curt March oh dear. Curt. That’s the one of the most egregious misreadings off very simple comment I’ve ever come across (which is saying something on the internet!) you’ve completely misunderstood me point, and decided to insult me in a foul mouthed way. Not really sure you’re the sort of person who should be listening to his music, as you are incapable of understanding it. You are not only demonstrating small minded ignorance, you are celebrating it too. Of course you have the freedom to react to any art as you wish. Just as anyone else has the freedom to pity you complete lack of insight.

Anybody from Austin remember that in Waterloo records, little spinning cassette holder full of only Daniel Johnston tapes? I got all his tapes there and they were all great. Some were such bad quality sound but pure beauty and genius. It's like finding a little hole to the universe under a crappy rock you pass by everyday. Thanks Daniel

I knew this great man and he had a art show at a local gallery here in Houston. Meanwhile less than five miles down the street this genius was dying in the hospital. He never even made it to his own opening, so sad. Taken from us way too soon and we are the worst because of his passing. But he did leave us a lasting memory of his beautiful spirit. Godspeed Daniel.

I met him in Austin years ago. He has always somehow been one of the few artists to invoke my deepest emotions. I know he doesn't check the usual "musical marks" but it never made a difference to me. I loved him. I still do. I wish I could hug him again.
@louiegallo12897 жыл бұрын
He grew up in the town where I am from (Chester, WV) and graduated from my high school years before me. By all accounts, he was an outcast and people always picked on him because he was "different". The pain as a result of that adversity can be heard in his music, singing, and lyrics. Now, he has 135,000+ monthly listeners on Spotify. He is a treasure and its our greatest pleasure.

i think the most incredible thing about daniel johnston is that everyone just allowed him to be himself from show number one. Nobody heckled him, nobody hassled him about a forgotten lyric or a bad note. Everyone just forgave everything because his heart was so fucking pure. Everyone just rolled with everything because it was genius, like some mutually respectful understanding. I miss this man.
