At a live show in a smaller club a few years ago, she walked out on the floor as she was singing, and came over to me and gave me a hug. I can still feel lit.

One of the most astonishing and soulful performances I have ever seen. There is NOBODY like Bettye Lavette! This goes WAY BEYOND just "singing". She grabs me, and she won't let go. This is the REAL DEAL, folks!

This is an amazing gem. Justin Hayward pays attention to very few renditions of his signature song, but when he heard Bettye's studio version he was totally taken by it (who wouldn't be) and absolutely loved the fact that she had completely turned the story into her own very special night in white satin.

"A force of nature" -- a phrase that we hear all too often attributed to artists who don't quite measure up to the hype, but this woman definitely embodies that phrase and encapsulates its meaning!! I, too, was introduced to her by the aforementioned Fresh Air episode the presenter referenced -- some months later (maybe even more than a year), I got to see a live performance she did at my downtown theater, the Weinberg (in Frederick, Md.), and I hafta say that it's high up on my list of favorite concerts that I've attended -- she hella owned that room with that one-of-a-kind voice of hers and had that audience in the palm of her hand from the first note to the last and all the stories she told in between the songs she sang!!!

@@PamelaPollandMusic No. I'm sorry - I love her- but absolute tf no. Janis Joplin is a talent beyond most people conception of what's possible. Both are great. She's underrated fosho, shamely so, but don't starting staying bs about Janis Joplin. She herself would probably be pretty upset about that kind of statement. That's just not true tbh

Hey Jas, sorry to offend you. I did not say anything bad about Janis, who I have admired for decades. Just saying what I think about Bettye, and I bet Janis would have LOVED Bettye and even wanted to sing with her. :-)@@jas_bataille
