What did you do in between the year you didn’t match and the year you did? Did you do another year of medical school?

@@lilyreiser8808 No, I graduated on time. I don't think it is even possible to do an additional year of medical school, unless you failed a course. During my year off, I met with my school's program director to discuss the pitfalls of my application. Then I made the changes suggested. I found shadowing opportunities, which I used one for a new letter of recommendation. I also worked as a scribe through a company called ScribeAmerica. That was a MAJOR humbling experiencing. At that time, I had graduated from medical school with a MD in good standing but scribing. Lastly, I worked as an Epic consultant. Epic is one of the premier electronic medical record companies. And of course continue to volunteer in community/church events that I was personally interested in. Those experiences above were included in a NEW personal statement, which I also talked about the adversity of not matching. It also important to expand not only the number of programs but also to different regions when applying the following year. I definitely will be making a more in-depth and detail video on "what to do next when you go unmatch". I hope this helped!

Great video. Of note (in case any med students are reading this): Preliminary and transitional year residencies are not simply for unmatched applicants or struggling students, as this video leads you to believe. I went to one for my first choice. Some are much better than others though and consider this option on a case by case basis based on your career goals.

Also: many programs are not "categorical," meaning you have to also match into a TY or prelim year. Diagnostic Radiology is a classic example of this.

Koru Designs American medical pathway is longer than compared to asian or european pathways because in America u do pre med and in european or asian u directly go to a medical uni after high school its called bmbs or mbbs or 6 yr md course

The 6 years med (7 years in my country) you are talking about is only for those who are really INTELLIGENT which is like in a 400 applications, only 40 would pass. If you can't pass that, then you have to go to pre-med and then medical school after.

Residency spots are funded by US taxpayers and it’s difficult for US citizens going to US medical schools, likely going on to practice in the US, to get spots. I know this post is 2 years old, but any foreign students should realize their chances at residency here are slim. Some foreign students do get accepted, but it’s ,rightfully, uncommon.

I have a question: If I (the applicant) ranked the program M as my 12th choice on my rank list, and the program M has 8 resident positions and it ranked me (the applicant) as 5th choice on its (the program M) rank list. Then, even if I didn’t match all my top 11 choices, I’d be still matched by the program M as my 12th choice and the program M’s 5th choice. Is this correct?

You explained the reason for the match being started in the first place very well. However, I still don't understand why this is viewed as a "problem." In every other field that has graduate level education, students are offered jobs early. Why does medicine have to be so special?

From personal experience reviewing resident applications, medical schools have very complex letters and reading them is like trying to figure out some sort of hieroglyphic map. And each school is different with the information that they send. And we get several thousand applicants and we only spend a minute or two on each application. Most of this time is not spent trying to figure out your class rank. So unless you’re in the top 10 of your class and this is very clearly stated in your Dean’s letter, which we also don’t really spend much time reading since you probably filled out a form telling them what to write about yourself anyway, I don’t really think it’s going to change much because frankly my friends and I are going to spend anymore time trying to decipher each schools different algorithm on where you compare to your classmates. That said, your step 2 score is going to be much much more important. And failing step one is probably going to look worse because it will be hard to see if you found it by just a little bit or a lot. Hope that helps!

The advice from MSI and NRMP suggest that the applicant should rank programs based on his/her preference and not on how the programs rank the applicant. But let’s say if the applicant has program A as his most desired program to go and got interviewed by the program A, but the applicant felt he did very poorly during the interview thus the program A wouldn’t rank him high on the program rank list. What should the applicant do? Should the applicant still put the program A high on his rank list? Can you clarify this situation?

I would definitely be interested in more videos from you about residency in general. It seems like (real) information on what to actually expect in residency (academically, professionally, and personally) is difficult to find. I have a question about the connection between the ERAS application and doing interviews at residency programs. Is the ERAS application like a medical school application where you select which schools/programs you want to inquire about, and so your application goes to them and they like you so they call you for an interview.... or are the ERAS applications just released into cyberspace and programs just randomly select students for interviews?

Shivani Shastri technically you can, but it’s pretty rare to do that unless the specialties are very similar because you have to get completely separate LORs, write completely separate essays, go on different interviews, etc. It gets expensive.

If you're US-citizen IMG, there isn't much of a difference. If you're non-US citizen, you'll also need to apply for a visa, like J1 or H1B, which not all residency programs sponsor.

I interviewed at separate DO schools that said the EXACT opposite thing. 1. COMLEX gets converted to a USMLE score. 2. If you are gonna go for a competitive residency, they used neurosurgery as an example, "you bet your bottom dollar you're gonna have to take the USMLE."

Colin Henderson please please please take the usmle. Programs still do not understand the comlex scoring and will never rank someone with a 600 comlex over a 230 on usmle. If you want to be competitive at all, do not skimp out on usmle.

If I rank a program with 10 spots 1st. The algorithm will attempt to match me to that program. However if that program ranks me 12th, but 2 of the top 10 at that program have other programs ranked first, will I match to that program? Or, because I do not break their top 10, will the algorithm go ahead and scoot me to my number 2.

Hi sorry for the delay . Military medical students participate in a different syestem and their results are delivered in December instead of March . The military residency programs are not allowed for civilians . However military med students can apply for civilian residency programs if they don’t Mach in military resdences .

In order to be a medical officer you have two options . Opinion 1 is applying for the hpsp scholarship. The hpsp scholarship is a program where the navy , army or air force will pay for your medical education in any USA university and then commission you as a medical officer . During the 4 years you will receive litunent pay . You will pretty much have the same lifestyle as your civilian classmates until clinical rotations . During clinical rotations you will be doing rotations at military hospitals and civilian . During the match you will be going for interviews to military hospitals and ranking their programs . Option 2 going to the military medical school in Maryland .

You can choose what specialities to apply for at different places. However, most apply to the specialty they want at different places with maybe a backup specialty also chosen at a couple places to try and prevent being unmatched if their chosen speciality is super competitive which increases their chances of going unmatched hence the purpose of a backup less competitive speciality.
