I saw Chuck Berry when I was about 18. He put on a great show. What I really liked was when he saw a kid , dressed in full teddy boy gear, duck-walking in front of the stage, Chuck called him up to the stage and they duck-walked across together. Very unlikely Bill Haley, at the same theatre and the same year, who when a few people jumped up on stage to dance, Haley had the fire curtain pulled down and left the stage - end of show!

Chuck was magnificent. The word "legend" gets thrown around so easily these days but I have no qualms whatsoever in applying it to Chuck. I had the pleasure of seeing him at a "Legends of Rock n Roll" concert in 1989 as a 19 year old and he could still rock the house at 63. None of my friends wanted to go so I went on my own as I love 50's and 60's rock n roll but I still enjoyed myself as it was a great concert and one that I'll never forget. RIP Mr Berry.

Thank you Chuck Berry for turning the world upside down, and I slid along into your messages of girls, cars and endless summers , often with no particular place to go and it shows, it just goes to show you never can tell! Magic, every white kid trying to play the blues had to start with Chuck Berry. To this day, no Chuck Berry, no nothing else, Beatles? Rolling Stones? and all the others, nope! Elvis was pretty but Chuck was and is the king!!!!! Even Elvis said so, the original rock and roll poet of rock. He taught and lead us all, forever thankful this great man gifted all of us with his magic, a true giant contributor to western society, He must be remembered and live on forever. Like Beethoven et al, he is a giant. Roll over, sir!

@@sideshowbob5237 I said nothing about race, although it’s apparent that everyone was of European descent in the audience. It was a strange time, there’s no question about. The good news is, it didn’t stay that way. Glass half full, which I know is an atypical perspective these days.

@@amandlathree No, no, nothing racist from either of us. It could be argued that he did more than anyone to undermine segregation by demonstrating that talent is not a racial thing. If you haven't already done so, check out this 1972 UK concert: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jHe1pniKmKl9ms0. In my opinion he was at his peak then. Note also the well behaved, white (UK student) audience.

Mr. Berry was a pioneer of modern musical entertainment. From rock, to guitar dancing, to wireless vocal and guitar decades before it was created.
@JClaus1221
@JClaus1221 4 жыл бұрын
His entire stage act he took from T-Bone Walker, and even he admitted it. His style was the creation of Willie Dixon, who took a lousy tune in Maybellene and turned it into a classic. He also produced uncredited every cut Chuck ever did with Chess in the 50s. His guitar licks were just sped up swipes of almost every solo T-Bone ever did. Chuck packaged everything well, and lord knows the brit invasion crowd loved him, but he was no pioneer. Plenty of others were rockin hard before he ever did a thing, but he did have some great tunes. (Much thanks to Johnnie Johnson again uncredited, though the RRHOF finally gave him credit).
@drwisdom1
@drwisdom1 4 жыл бұрын
@@JClaus1221 Didn't you notice the part about "wireless vocal and guitar"? They didn't have that then. Mr. Berry wasn't just lip syncing, he wasn't even playing his guitar. That is what entertainers do, not musicians. But I don't want to be too hard on such old content.

Amazing all these masterpieces by Chuck scored so low on the hit parade. He was 36 places ahead of his time.

But even with that, he still scored 5 top 10 hits on the Billboard pop chart within the decade of the 50's, which is more than Little Richard, Bill Haley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Buddy Holly, Carl Perkins, Sam Cooke, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, Ritchie Valens and even Ray Charles had within that decade. In fact, of all the legendary rock stars of the '50's, only Elvis Presley, Fats Domino, The Everly Brothers and Ricky Nelson(if you include him in that group, instead of with the "teen idols") had more top ten pop hits with Rock songs back then.

I saw him live on stage in the late 50's. He was great! I was 13 and had bought a ticket to see him as soon as they were selling them, then got "grounded" before the show but that didn't keep me from going. My mom came to the huge auditorium where CB was playing that night and bout dragged me outta there and informed me that I was GROUNDED again and when i asked for how long. She was so mad cuz i was already grounded b4 the show, anyway... in her disgust with my behavior, she answered "FOREVER!". .. I'm now soon to be a 76 year old grounded recycled teenager.

INCREDIBLE Lyrics Oh well, oh well, I feel so good today We touched ground on an international runway Jet propelled back home, from over the seas to the U. S. A. New York, Los Angeles, oh, how I yearned for you Detroit, Chicago, Chattanooga, Baton Rouge Let alone just to be at my home back in ol' St. Lou Did I miss the skyscrapers, did I miss the long freeway? From the coast of California to the shores of Delaware Bay You can bet your life I did, till I got back to the U. S. A. Looking hard for a drive-in, searching for a corner café Where hamburgers sizzle on an open grill night and day Yeah, and a juke-box jumping with records like in the U.S.A. Well, I'm so glad I'm livin' in the U.S.A. Yes. I'm so glad I'm livin' in the U.S.A. Anything you want, we got right here in the U.S.A.

RIP Chuck. If anyone should have been issued a patent on rock and roll, it should have been the great Chuck Berry! That era of the 1950s-early 60s will never happen again except for in our memories. Beats the hell out of this total shit we have now written by the same corporate conglomerate asshole outfits that produce everything in a studio via computerized software that can make even the shittiest singer sound half way good. Gone are the days of an artist who can not only sing great but write his own music and PLAY his own instrument and play it well. Hell, give me the good old days, Fuck the 2010s.
