Thank you for this video sir. I’m on the receiving end of rehoming a 6 foot female green iguana she’s beautiful and I’m a huge animal lover and know jack squat about them. Thank you for this video she is very mild chills a lot and even lets me hold her on occasion just learning all her signs and tricks she’s in the middle of a big shed so no messing with her much now but I can’t wait till she’s done shedding her color is dull but where she’s let the old asking go so far she’s got huge color. From the previous owner they think she’s 11-14 years old give or take🤙🏻

I have kept Iguanas and monitors for over twenty years. I've only been bitten three times and none of the injuries required an ER visit. You need to do a lot of research and be very dedicated. They are good pets for advanced keepers but their reputation for aggression is exaggerated

I’m surprised they don’t have an even worse rep. In the 90s suburban pet shops (petco) all over were selling baby iguanas and Burmese pythons by the handful. I have no idea what happened to all those animals but I highly doubt even 5 percent were kept appropriately for their life. With all the ignorance associated with that over selling I’m suprised they haven’t tried banning them everywhere.

Love all the info! From south FL and just took in a wild-caught baby green iguana. (We were not the ones who caught her) She seems to be content and doesn’t freak out when being handled. We have never had an iguana but are doing everything we can for her as we learn what they need. I am worried we aren’t keeping it humid enough for her. Humidity ranges from 40-70% depending on how long after misting it has been. So I’m going to try the coco fiber and peat moss.

Glad someone said it. It takes thousands to properly raise an iguana. Sad cause people don't think a $20 lizard will cost that but if you want them to thrive it's necessary. Otherwise you'll just end up with dead/sick iguanas. Fogger systems rock

Great video, excellent information 😁👍 (Well maybe except the recommendation of the pellets. I would recommend only produce isle foods and should be at least 70% leafy greens). But the info about how they change appearance and personality with age is way too underestimated and I'm glad you bring attention to it. Also great info about the temperature and humidity 👍 They need their own room. 6 by 6 by 4 is a survival sized or quarantine enclosure. And they can injure themselves attacking their glass-reflection. All the best wishes for you and Steve 😁

I have one male and one female, both are 2 years old and the female is bigger because she eats more than the male, I’m from Honduras, Central America, we have tropical temperatures and I have their enclosure in my backyard where they can bask and have fresh air, I hope they reproduce and have babies

I just rescued a green iguana . The owner never handled it, it’s still relatively small , (a little smaller than Steve) what can I do to help tame and handle my iguana, I really would rather not have an aggressive iguana year round. I’m not sure where to begin with getting it to trust me (I’ve had it less than 24hrs I’m not sure the sex)

Hello xandra! I would suggest you start with small increments of handling 5-10 minutes and attempt to hand feed your iguana if possible. Eventually over time they will be more calm with the 5-10 minutes of handling and also know that you are the owner and you are the one that provides them with food. thus creating a positive symbiotic relationship between the two of you much like a cat or dog. when handling do not let your iguana climb onto your head as this can be a form of dominance and do not back down if they try to posture you (defensive strike posture), call their bluff and pick them up while avoiding their tail. that should get you started if you have any more question feel free to reach out to me on here or my Instagram and I will be glad to help!

As far as an enclosure what about grow tents? They are alot cheaper than a custom made enclosure
@NicksReptileWorld
@NicksReptileWorld 5 күн бұрын
@allenmelton3367 they are cheaper, however they don't usually have the best ventilation for heat and humidity which could cause health issues if not done properly. They also don't come in a big enough size for a fully grown iguana. I would say you could use a grow tent as a temporary enclosure until the iguana gets some age and nice to them

Just got my 2 iguanas, an albino green and a normal green, a week ago (New Year's Eve to be exact) and they're just 3 months old. The albino green had black scales on its legs and the normal green had some loose scales. Some told me it's skin rot, fungi, bad shed, and the person who I bought it from called and told me that they have mites, but I don't see any mites on them. I couldn't bring them to the vet cause vets here are only specialized in dogs and cats. The nearest exotic vets here are 5 hours away and only open on weekdays, which are my workdays. Tell me what I should do; I'm losing myself right now.
@NicksReptileWorld
@NicksReptileWorld Жыл бұрын
Well no offense but you should have had an exotic vet that could care for the animals before you got the animals, since you have them now the only thing you have the option to do is either return the animals to who you bought them from for a refund or continue to try to find an exotic vet that can help you in state or out of state. Scale rot and other types of illnesses/diseases can and should only be treated by a qualified veterinarian

Cool video, I kind of disagree about your enclosure segment though. It's a waste of time buying and upgrading enclosures as they grow, and that tends to give people too much room to be complacent with neglect. It's best to provide the full size enclosure from the start. it saves money, It shows what they really need as a species, and it can prevent people from impulse buying an iguana when they're told they need a six foot by six foot by 4 foot enclosure to thrive. They just really aren't an aquarium species at any step and it drives me nuts seeing people keeping iguanas in a 40 gallon tank that stresses them out due to lack of height. There's also conflicting information about the pet trade being responsible for the invasive population in Florida, it may have contributed but many were thought to be stowaways on fruit shipments from South America as far back as the 60s
@NicksReptileWorld
@NicksReptileWorld Жыл бұрын
I would not suggest putting a baby iguana in an enclosure that's built for an adult, that could more than likely stress babies and even juveniles out and lead to possible health issues, plus If someone can not afford to upgrade their enclosures according to the growth of their animals they probably shouldn't own that animal in the first place which is why I emphasize expense in the video. In terms of iguanas becoming stowaways even before the 60's, that's definitely true. However the pet trade mass production of iguanas in the 70's-90's with lack of information or knowledge of the species is responsible for them being an established invasive species in Florida.

Size isn't a problem if the proper cage furniture is present. It ain't like they have cozy terrariums in nature for their first year. Being in a fish tank at waist height is stressful too, especially when the only way to access it is from above. I've never seen sombody actually advocate for buying multiple enclosures before, that's just terrible advice
@NicksReptileWorld
@NicksReptileWorld Жыл бұрын
@@Chudchanning you are entitled to your own opinion of course. What I'm saying is not that I think we should throw iguanas in aquariums because thats not what I'm Getting at with this. I with firm evidence believe that Captive bred Green Iguanas require multiple enclosure upgrades throughout their life until they reach adulthood because you cannot just buy a walk in enclosure and put a baby iguanas you got from a breeder or pet store and expect them to thrive. They will be extremely stressed out. It's the same reason you don't put a baby crested gecko into a 18 x 18 x 18 enclosure, I hope that clarified what I was trying to say. I respect your opinion, however with my years of experience with reptiles I figured I would give some input 😁

Can you start with a large enclosure? Or do you need to start small?
@NicksReptileWorld
@NicksReptileWorld 8 ай бұрын
Hello Christine, I would recommend that you start with a smaller enclosure for a younger iguana and gradually upgrade them to a bigger enclosure as them grow. This way you can avoid stressing out your animal :)

Hey Man, I just got a blue Iguana about 2 months ago & I've done months of research but I would like more insight and advice if that could be possible via phone call. I am currently building a custom enclosure and almost done, but i think my main concerns are the eating diets, bathing, and some lighting questions.
