Dan, don't let Mike tease you about making fun of your skincare routine! I think guys that take care of their skin are guys who pay attention to their hygiene, which is VERY important. Eyebrow tracing is still a thing! The thicker eyebrow is back in favor, thank heavens. The plucking fiasco of the early 2000s still haunts me.

Question! Since Pale skin was so valued and favored, what about Chinese people with albinism? Were people with albinism regarded as beautiful or was their condition viewed more negatively?

I guess albinism must have been viewed negatively since to them it may seem like some supernatural stuff.....I mean they had no idea about albinism back then and people have the tendency to avoid/be scared of things they don't see as normal
@castielanne2544
@castielanne2544 8 жыл бұрын
No. You don't understand . White means clean and pure. It's more pleasing when you look at someone who has clear face and fresh. But it's different for albinism. They would be cast out or viewed weirdly. As certain chinese people who are whiter naturally is different from albinism people. So for chinese female who has tanner skin than naturally white chinese female, they wanted to look like the white chinese female.

SOso Chanel u dnt understand dear... Price of make up in for example asia is not the same as in a western country. In western you have affordable make up for every price. In asia all the make up have a certain price which is STILL expensive to afford for poor people. So this system is still continuing there like if you wear make up your rich and if you don't wear make up or can't afford it you're poor...
@OowllwoO

+J Niss You know what... You're right. Before 2 days I came out of a cosmetic store with 1 lipstick, 1 nail polish, 1 perfume all for about $300, the other day I returned them cuz I really needed that money.. and I was thinking 'how poor ppl can buy those things while they hardly buy the essential needs'.

Fish glue, not fish guts. And common glue (Elmer's glue) today is a bi-product of the milk industry. Hide glue is made from hide, hooves, and horns being boiled and boiled until it breaks down and becomes gelatinous and sticky. It can be dried and made into flakes which can be-constituted when needed (it reeks btw).

RIGHT! Some of the mercuric compounds are worse than others, the sulfur based one is SOMEWHAT less toxic than mercuric oxide for example-but nothing to put on your face! Another better natural red color is cochineal, but you might not like its source! It is from the little bug Dactylopius coccus! But when it is purified and dried it makes a beautiful carmine color that is much better than mercury sulfide.

I love learning about makeup history from any civilization or time period especially during the 1600s-1800s in Europe.

Xafir, sost makeup before WERE chemicals known for causing cancer and stuff. Just look at the Victorian era, they used lead!

Yes I know But look at the packaging of eg your foundation. You can't tell me these things grow on trees. They are made out of several chemicals that you don't even know about. Do you think things like Alkyl Benzoate are harmless. :D

Yes, certainly cinnabar/vermillion, while gorgeous, isn't safe! That stuff is mercury ore and will give you permanent neurological damage while it slowly kills you. If you put it on your face as make-up (as they did in Europe as well; mercury powder was used for whitening the skin there, as well as lead powder) then it will cause a surprising amount of damage to your skin as well. Poor Queen Elizabeth I who used it all her life was apparently quite horrific without her make-up by the end. Ochre is perfectly fine, though. It's just a type of mud; you create different colours with it from how long you heat it for.

I am so jealous of Dan´s facial bone structure! I would give anything to have those cheekbones and jawline! Completely understandable he takes care of it with creams and moisturizers.

I dunno, the makeup routine doesn't seem that long to me we put on toner put on lotion put on anti-aging cream put on bb cream put on sunscreen put on concealer shape our eyebrows colour the eyebrows put on eyeliner grip the eyelashes (or glue on fake eyelashes) put on mascaras put on eyeshadow (crease, lid, lower lash...ext) put on lip balm put on lipstick touch of blush (optional)

Fish gut glue must have smelled so fresh 😝 Thank you for this video. It's very interesting to learn more about ancient Chinese makeup. I'm half tempted to try rice flour rather than the modern day cocktail of big scary words for powder. Wonder if it would stay on well 🤔🖤
