Pressure test the water system when cold. If it holds for 30minutes head gaskets should be fine. If radiator has built in oil cooler I would send it away for cleaning and pressure testing if possible. When you overheated it that's when the oil would have been emulsified. All and every oil drop made its way to the expansion tank. Shame you didnt check the header when you first got it.

Just had a thought, the gunk might be coming from your water pump bearings. If they used loads of coolent when they machined out that Union it might have found its way through and into the cavity between the bearings. That stuff tracks through and rots cables on CNCs at work. It looks a bit soapy in your video too.

Sorry to hear about the setback. Mine had HGF at about 70k miles when my dad owned it. It happened during a long run back from France during which the car continued to run pretty much fine. In the end it went to a specialist to be done - engine removal and as you have intimated, the heads were well stuck on. If I was doing it now I'd find some space, get the engine out and on the bench and do a light rebuild yourself - refresh the heads, hone the bores, new rings, crank shells and seals. It'll still come out miles cheaper than paying a specialist and would be a great project. I'll even buy a T-shirt to help fund it!

When fixing lots of issues with old mid-engine cars, if you have 3 or more things to do then bite the bullet and drop/pull the engine. Much easier to work on and you'll no doubt see many things that need attention - things you didn't see when the engine was in place.

Just a thought - years ago, I had a similar problem with the wife's Opel Rekord Station Wagon: it turned out to be the water pump housing on the front of the engine that (for some obscure reason) had oil and water channels in close proximity. Corrosion caused a hole to develop and presumably because of the higher oil pressure, the oil got into the water (rather than the other way round). Replacing the housing solved the problem. It may be worthwhile looking for any weird 'attachments' to your engine's block or heads that might have similar channels.... a long shot, but still...

First things first. Remove expansion tank & thoroughly clean. Flush the cooling system and just refill with water at this stage. Then conduct a "sniff test" to see if there are any exhaust gases entering the cooling system. As someone else has mentioned, someone could have accidentally put oil in the expansion tank before and it's old residue. Be sure to thoroughly check all this before pulling the engine. If oil is entering the cooling system you'd also expect water to be entering the oil

Whenever I've had oil in the water, it's been oil leaking into the coolant section of the oil cooler. Happened several times. The oil system works at a higher pressure than the cooling system, which explains the direction of travel. I am not convinced you have head gasket issues. You'd also get rough running on idle, and/or a bit more steam. Good luck.
@Z4NL4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely this!
@andrewausterfield67104 жыл бұрын
@@Z4NL Not always exactly this - you get steam when the water comes into the combustion chamber. It's possible for a head gasket to fail between an oil and water pathway and this is why the car will continue to run fine.

Very honest of you to admit it is your fault! That could be the remains of a previous HG failure boiling out. It takes a fair bit of use to get the goo out of the pipes. Boiling the car over as you did could have released oil deposits from lower down in the cooling system that normally stay cold. Running the engine with Lux handwash flakes in the cooling system for a day would have removed those oily remains also.

I suspect as the engine is running fine it's going to be the oil cooler. Check if it is an oil cooler problem and also as you did not have this problem before? Check the water pump job as you may have disturbed or mis-fitted a gasket, allowing an oil-water mix. Not savvy with this engine but would not blame a head gasket until I was 100% sure it was not possible another cheaper reason. Good luck, stay safe. Jim

Rather than drain the coolant, I would over fill it so the gunky crap comes out the top of the reservoir rather than goes back down through the system, you can obviously drain and flush it after, but you want that crap out first....., and, if there's less on the 1st attempt, flush again as there could possibly be oily residue from the pump work you did...... it takes very little oil to make the coolant look really bad......

Don’t get dis-heartened and think this through methodically. As you know, the function of the Head Gasket is to keep Coolant, Gas and Oil separate. So you need to VALIDATE EACH SYSTEM INDEPENDENTLY. You have done a compression test which proves no compromise to the Gas system and that is a biggy! I’ve been trying to understand how you can get just one-way contamination (Oil in water but not water in Oil) and the general consensus of basic engine design is that you can’t ! This is because a compromised Head Gasket will leak both ways into each other as and when pressure differentials change. Because that is what this is all about, pressure overcoming a seal. The high pressure medium will always travel to the low pressure medium, and this will reveal itself as contamination. No doubt this is what confuses your expert because having no water ingress in the oil is significant. It does beg a question about 308 engine design. Do you know or can you find out if the head Gasket sees full Oil pressure?, or are the Oil orifices simply supporting Oil drain-back galleries from Head-to sump? How does the Head receive Oil pressure in your engine? If the Gasket only sees Oil drain back then they are not at fault. Investigate other potential areas in the Head where an Oil-to-Water jacket bleed can occur such as a failing internal Oil Gallery core blanking plug. As conjecture, is it perhaps possible (but not probable) that during the overheat incident, there was just a momentary pressure event that compromised the Head Gasket. In this scenario, only a discrete amount of coolant would get into the Oil. Oil can absorb up to 400ppm water before it becomes a visible emulsion (approx 3cc of water in 6L sump). But vice versa, the Water cannot absorb Oil so it floats to the top in the header tank and is immediately obvious.

I'm not a Ferrari expert but had you looked in the expansion chamber prior to this? That crap could have been in there a while - flush it all out. Is it possible to remove the expansion tank and clean it off the car? Do that to start with - flush through thoroughly with clean fresh water and then fill with the correct coolant and see what happens. Good luck and keep your chin up.

I can send you a mechanic from Bulgaria, here we do head gasket jobs including engine removing for 100-200 euro, what are this prices that you have there, that`s insane. I have a friend mechanic he travel every year to UK for a month to repair cars in Norwich.

Do a cooling system flush. You'll be 'right as rain', as you say on your side of the pond. Fluids don't flow just one way. There is contamination in the radiator but I doubt it came from the engine. I see this as a red herring... How closely have you inspected the radiator fluid since the boil over? Did you just top up? A good pressurized flush. New proper fluids. Check it again. Get back to us with the results! It's just a little mucus..

Such bad luck - sorry to hear, but let’s do this!! I may have a big garage you can borrow! Have you considered the “hire a garage” schemes where you pay by the hour, including a ramp? It may be relatively cost effective to pay for a week or something? Or hire a garage? Alternatively if you are anywhere near HP22, I have a big garage you could use for a week or two? Fits 6 cars in. I don’t have an engine lift, but have a lot of other tools....

Very kind, thanks for the offer. I’m in oXford so not a million miles away but not super close either. Will bet it in mind though!

Number 27 - just let me know. It’s a big 3 bay garage, each bay 6m wide (2 cars plus lots of room), double doors etc. You could bring it here, do the work, get a train/cab home and come back the weekend after if needed. I could even help you for some of it. I’ve got an XKR and 911 in there at the moment, so they’d appreciate the influenzo friend 😂 We’d have to make sure that they social distance though! If you want photos etc PM me and I can send some over

Another thumbs up to the oil cooler leaking oil into the water system. As others have said, this is a fairly common fault on VAG cars....fingers crossed it's a similar issue on the InfluEnzo. The fact that there's no water in the oil points to this being a potential cause.

Nice thing about the 308 is that the engine can come out from up top, so you could do it in your garage. You need what we call a cherry picker (engine crane). It's a fairly straightforward job, the car should be around 18" up on jack stands. Replacing the head studs is always a good idea. You can also flush the coolant more often and just enjoy the car for awhile. As long as there is no water in the oil, it's not as bad.

Don’t think I have the room or height to get the engine out. I have an engine lift but can’t see how i could get it all to fit
@MikeNewland4 жыл бұрын
My thought is that if you want to do this cheap cheap hobby then you need to work out how to get the engine out on your own at home. You are then backed up with the means to start the job of dismantling if necessary and it's not so fearful as a prospect. Train hard fight easy.

Although it may be of small comfort every Ferrari spends the majority of its life stationary.

Seriously though, when you flush the system put some Steel Seal or some other head gasket sealer in it. I used Holts rad seal gold in my Alfa 159 and has worked a treat. I don't think you can make it any worse than it already is.

Ok.. I’ll bear it in mind!

Oh No!! Not again!! Man this car is a bucket of surprises, good and bad!! Are you sure thats oil in the expansion tank and not just grimey sludge? Or possibly something that happened in the past which has been dislodged when you did the WATER pump. I am hopeful when you flush/clean the cooling system everything will be fine when you pressure test it.......... Never a dull moment with the Influenzo!! I'll buy a T-Shirt!! I'd even give you a hand if I was in the UK!!
