Brilliant video and one lucky escape. The joys of motoring ‘as my father use to tell me’. The sound could be belts to tight, the alternator can also make a whistling noise, both when new and when there getting tired. It could also be a vacuum hose leak, maybe a split hose, for the most part that wouldn’t make a noticeable difference to performance. Good luck and look forward to the next video

No probs, I too have classic cars and motorcycles, my daily is a 1978 Mk1 Cavalier that was a bad model L, but now has the Carlton GSI 3.0 24v straight 6, Manta 400 getrag gearbox and back axle. Using a classic every day is far far better than a modern car and the smiles per miles......you can’t put a price on that
@prime1971
@prime1971 4 жыл бұрын
sounds like a vacuum leak to me, that would only happen under load not on gradual acceleration, or perhaps a vacuum regulator after distributor makes maximum advance so that too much vacuum doesn't damage the diaphragm
@eskamobob8662
@eskamobob8662 4 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Sounds exactly like when the vacuum advance diaphragm on my distributor got a leak. That would also explain while it's only on full throttle
@Dundertaker1
@Dundertaker1 4 жыл бұрын
p_r_i_m_e does the 308 have a full throttle position sensor and system? Then I’d trouble shoot that. Vac advance would be possible as stated...etc... my suggestion always is you have to get the car in spec and all maintenance caught up to really sort out a car. I.e. of it needs a top end refresh..you’d probably fix most issues when you change out hoses, vac lines, clean or replace fuel lines, adjust timing, etc...otherwise you’re chasing your tail. Coolant flush via overheating is one way of doing regular maintenance...;)

Not to sure about your thoughts on air leak on full chat. You’ll get lower manifold pressure on closed throttle high rpm over run conditions. Best bet is to get it to your nearest rolling road once lock down is lifted. But great content. And an interesting noise. Cover the basics first. Think simple.

Agreed also - the noise only seems to be under load, so I don't think it's just related to engine speed like an alternator bearing would be. Also, those pipes perish, and the car is from 1981 by the reg. plate

No, doubt it, alternator bearings don't sound like that, and it still wouldn't make much sense why it's only at full throttle. You can usually hear it at very low RPMs if it's going out.

Hi Jack - loving your Influenza videos - very informative and very entertaining too. I have a possible explanation for your squeaking noise as a similar thing happened on my Porsche 997.1 C4S. It sounded like a slipping belt and only happened under load at high revs. I changed belts & idler pulleys, the water pump and even the pulley on the alternator - none of which cured the problem. The guys that do my servicing eventually tracked it down to a cracked exhaust bracket that was resonating/rubbing together at high load/high revs. £20 spent on some tack welds cured it and it’s never done it since! Maybe a simple one to check if only to rule it out? All the best. Mike

Missed this. The 5GT Turbo felt more planted and faster because of that puffer. The 205 GTI 1.9was light as a feather in every way, and soddin’ fast cross country. Basically, take yer pick. Happy days. Ooh, and the 1.9 was a bit over throttled, so a mere touch on the accelerator caused the Pug to storm forward like a stabbed rat.

i quote wikipidia"The engine speed is limited only by the amount of fuel/air mixture that is available in the manifold. ... If the engine is operating under heavy load at wide throttle openings (such as accelerating from a stop or pulling the car up a hill) then engine speed is limited by the load and minimal vacuum will be created." when you lift off the throttle a vacuum is created and the ensuing difference in pressure through the venturi is whats probably making that sound

@@Number27 As someone who does not work on cars but computers, I'd also say that sounds very much like electronics coil whine. Hence an alternator sounds like a plausible explanation. The electromagnetic sound induction is often amplified by resonances, so it is typical that it becomes audible only under some specific conditions.

What a great video! (1) I totally agree that modern cars just aren't as much fun to drive slowly. I've noticed this more in German cars. I think they have made the car so capable at high speeds that this stability ruins them under the conditions that we normally use them. (2) extreme highs and lows in emotions. It sounds like you own an Italian car. Passion one way or another. (3) I LOVE to hear that car running. What a wonderful, raw sound. And the click-click from the notchy shift lever, it's great. In watching you drive, I almost feel the car myself. It looks like such a wonderful experience. (4) The whistling noise is related to throttle position, which makes me think it' may be a normal noise from airflow through a carburetor or potentially there's a small vacuum leak that only opens when under high vacuum. Or more likely there's a hose that collapses under high vacuum, causing a whistle when air is pulled through it.

One possibility for the whistling sound at 4,000 RPM under full throttle only could be a worn bushing around the carb butterfly shaft, allowing external air to enter thus causing a whistle. Wiggle each butterfly shaft by hand to see if there is any play. If that is the cause, fixing it will improve the air/fuel ratio as well.

I remember seeing them on Irish roads throughout the 90's. The 205 GTI are practically extinct in Ireland now. Insanely rare. Real shame, dunno what happened to them. Time passes i guess.

Could be vacuum leak. But since it's on full throttle... It would be vacuum created by ported vacuum. So if the car has ported vacuum. Check any thing on the car connected by ported vacuum. Not manifold vacuum. Could be a very slight exhaust leak from a leaking exhaust manifold gasket, exhaust manifold or a small hole in the muffler or welds.

If it makes you feel better, it only boiled over because the engine had stopped. True enough, it would have eventually done it with the engine running, but it's the fact that it stopped pumping coolant that caused it to tip over the edge. Obviously it was still too hot, but I don't think you were quite as close to needing surgery as it seemed! It also suggests the coolant is circulating well, as it was the circulation alone that was keeping it from boiling up.

For your whistle - Strange as it might sound... I'm going to suggest that it could be the exhaust. I only suggest that because on one of my modern classics (not a Ferrari unfortunately) as the stainless exhaust has got old, it hasn't started rattling or getting louder, but under hard acceleration it does whistle! I haven't investigated yet, but i'm assuming it's just baffles blowing through differently (worn or clogging). Good luck tracking it down.

Had a whistle on an Audi TT that turned out to be a split in the crankcase pressure relief valve diaphragm. It was intermittent whilst driving but eventually it started to whistle after turning the engine off. It stopped once the crankcase pressure dissipated. Just a thought.....

to me it still sounds like a vacuum leak, and although you've balanced the carbs at idle. You could possibly still draw air through lower gaskets or butterfly seals bearings. Try some really soapy water on the bottom of the carbs and get a friend to look for signs of an air leak

Probably nothing to do with the noise, and it's hard to tell what sort of sound it is on a laptop, but 1) does it only happen when moving or also when stationary whilst being revved?, or only under load? 2) Get an oil analysis done if you can, and a cooling water analysis - then you can tick those two off too. Two things to possibly think about 1) Input shaft bearing 2) Thrust bearing not releasing properly (????) I have had this on a lesser car and the bearing got noisy over a certain rpm - but I could be guessing all day and still be wrong.

I surmise you didn't hear this hissing/high pitch rattle before you got all 8 cylinders going so that may be a clue. That formerly idle cylinder may now be putting pressure on something that has not been "tested" ever since the cylinder stopped firing. I've come across someone else having a problem with their exhaust manifold seal "giving up" once his engine hit the high notes. It only happens under load after hitting a rev level. You can imagine that area around the exhaust manifold would not have been as hot as where the other cylinders were venting hot exhaust. Look around the exhaust manifold gasket to see if there is any signs of an exhaust leak. Check to see if the bolts are equally tight where the "lazy" cylinder exhausts. Good luck!
@Number27
@Number27 4 жыл бұрын
No it did it before it was running on all 8 as well...
@mikel6187
@mikel6187 4 жыл бұрын
@@Number27 That does not make a "loose" gasket cause less compelling. The uneven heating of the mating surfaces at the exhaust manifold will cause the expansion of normally heated areas to move more than the relatively cooler spot and that can cause a leak-back
@mikel6187
@mikel6187 4 жыл бұрын
...sorry, didn't quite finish there...silly browser. I was about to say... leak-back scavenging effect whereby the exhaust pressure from the firing cylinders on that bank will leak backwards and escape from any weak spots at the non-firing cylinder exhaust manifold interface. So this sort of leak can happen even when the engine was only firing on 7 cylinders.

It sounds more like an air leak to me. How do the brakes feel? Does this car have a servo? I’d rig your phone or camera up in different areas of the engine bay to video and diagnose the rough area it’s coming from after watching the playback and inspect anything in that area.

Good idea on 308,s is to modify bleed screw on rad to self bleeder, they build up air in system. Noise could be anything sounds like bearing race, or even baffles in exhaust, Alternators on these are same as fiat 124, or 80s Iveco Zeta

Number 27 I took brass bleeder screw of top of rad and gave it to a guy in Ferrari group when I lived in US he braised a domestic radiator blew valve that would bleed air off at a certain pressure. It was 18 years ago now, I had a lot of trouble with air build up in system, I believe it was common with some 308,s

There are a number of discussions on fchat about "whistling" sounds and it pretty much always comes down to the exhaust. There are however very few people with a single pipe so not sure if it's related. I would say it's definitely not an intake leak as that would show up mostly at idle with closed throttles and become mostly a non issue when the throttles are wide open.
@Number27
@Number27 4 жыл бұрын
Thank for the advice Paul,. Yes it is the exhausts with baffles in the tips that can whistle.. mine has one exit pipe with no baffle..

Sounds like it's running very well now. That whistle definitely sounds like an air leak. Maybe a vacuum pipe somewhere? Or take the auxiliary belt off briefly and just go down the road at full Throttle for a minute and that will eliminate any of the bearings in the alternator etc.
