Nurit Peled-Elhanan is an Israeli philologist, professor of language and education at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, translator, and activist. She is a 2001 co-laureate of the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought awarded by the European Parliament.
In 1997, Nurit's daughter, Smadar, was killed during the Ben Yehuda street Palestinian suicide attack.
We speak today about the silencing of internal critics in Israel, the Israeli education system and the propaganda in place in Israel from a very early age, to the "Where do we go now?" question.

NURIT THANK YOU! You are brave and a truth teller. The Myths of Israeli society run deep. The erasure of Palestinians and what they live with, either under military occupation or as third class citizens of Israel, day after day, year after year, is so enormous. As a former Israeli I commend your deep understanding, honesty, and dedication towards helping us all to be more compassionate, honest and human in the face of brutality and dehumanization.

Dr. Peled was my professor for a course at Tel Aviv University nearly 20 years ago. She told a story of a Haitian author who jumped off a bridge with his leg tied to an unabridged French dictionary. The idea that language and money have such power to subjugate people is undeniable. I am grateful for the way she continues to challenge me to consider the value of human life.

I am a Palestinian. My family history goes back centuries in Jaffa. The Paestinians are a people and my ancestors lived on that land and both sides of family were rooted out in 1948. There is no other reality. There is only truth. My father was born in a tent in Gaza beacuse my grandparents were disspossed. This is reality. There is no excuse for terrorism. Dispossession and oppression breeds violent uprising.

I agree that there is no excuse to terrorism, but was the 7th of October a terrorist act, a resistance act or an act of desperation? I think it's the 3rd, for it was violence against civilian Israelis. This said, from what I see and hear, by far most Israelis or Zionists are terrorists of the worse sort.

Great interview! I am a 71 year old Canadian. We got our first television when i was 8 or 9 years old and one of the earliest memories I have is a TV documentary about the so-called “holocaust”….in which we were encouraged to never, never, never forget. I was very emotionally moved and thought “I will never forget!” Now i can clearly see that that was trauma based mind control, and we have been subjected to that propaganda all our lives. This is pure evil and we need to resist.

The phrase “a land without a people” refers to the idea that Palestinians aren’t “a people,” but merely Arabs who can just as well go to 22 other countries. The answer is that even if they weren’t “a people,” they’re still people and have every right to live on their land as free and equal citizens.

Even after May 8th 1945 massacre on which dozens of thousand Algerian civilians were killed, settlers believed they would rule for ever ! They were backed by a powerful army. The situation is exactly the same in Palestine. One day 7th October will be regarded as the beginning of the end of zionist colonial project. Professor Dean Phillip Bell, who is dean and professor of Jewish history at Spertus Institute of Jewish Studies in Chicago: “Jews under medieval Islam never suffered from the same general negative perception as in the Christian West. Despite regional variations and high medieval political instability, in medieval Islam multicultural environments, combined with active engagement in sciences and literature, led to something of an Islamic golden age for the Jews, at least according to most historical accounts. It has been primarily in the context of recent political developments that the once assumed positive views of Jewish life under medieval Islam have been seriously questioned.” Dean Phillip Bell, Jews in the Early Modern World. @@contact594 "For most of the Middle Ages the Jews of Islam comprised the greater and more active part of the Jewish people. The Jews who lived in Christian countries, that is in Europe, were a minority, and a relatively unimportant one at that. With few exceptions, whatever was creative and significant in Jewish life happened in Islamic lands. The Jewish communities of Europe formed a kind of cultural dependency on the Jews of the far more advanced and sophisticated Islamic world, extending from Muslim Spain in the west to Iraq, Iran, and Central Asia in the east." Bernard Lewis, a Jewish Historian, in his book: 'The Jews of Islam'
@KHABIB-TIME
@KHABIB-TIME 10 ай бұрын
@@contact594 Jewish historian, Prof Amnon Cohen, from Hebrew University of Jerusalem studied the 16th century documents stored in the archives of the Shari’ah religious court of Jerusalem (commonly known as sijill), whereby he found 1000 Jewish cases filed from the year 1530 to 1601 CE. Cohen published his research in 1994 during which he made some astonishing discoveries, as he himself states: ‘Cases concerning Jews cover a very wide spectrum of topics. If we bear in mind that the Jews of Jerusalem had their own separate courts, the number of cases brought to Muslim court (which actually meant putting themselves at the mercy of a judge outside the pale of their communal and religious identity) is quite impressive[1]…The Jews went to the Muslim court for a variety of reasons, but the overwhelming fact was their ongoing and almost permanent presence there. This indicates that they went there not only in search of justice, but did so hoping, or rather knowing, that more often than not they would attain redress when wronged…The Jews went to court to resolve much more than their conflicts with Muslim or Christian neighbours. They turned to Shari’a authorities to seek redress with respect to internal differences, and even in matters within their immediate family (intimate relations between husband and wife, nafaqa maintenance payments to divorcees, support of infants etc.).’[2] Cohen further elaborates upon the Jewish condition in the 16th century Ottoman Jerusalem: ‘Their possessions were protected, although they might have had to pay for extra protection at night for their houses and commercial properties. Their title deeds and other official documents indicating their rights were honoured when presented to the court, being treated like those of their Muslim neighbours[3]…The picture emerging from the sijill documents is baffling. On the one hand we encounter recurring Sultanic decrees sent to Jerusalem - in response to pleas of the Jews - to the effect that “nothing should be done to stop them from applying their own law” regarding a variety of matters. There are also many explicit references to the overriding importance of applying Shari’a law to them only if they so choose. On the other hand, if we look closely at some of the inheritance lists, we see that the local court allocated to female members of Jewish families half the share given to male members, exactly as in Islamic law. This meant, ipso facto, a significant improvement in the status of Jewish women with respect to legacies over that accorded them by Jewish tradition, although it actually meant the application of Islamic law in an internal Jewish context [4]…he [the Muslim Judge] defended Jewish causes jeopardized by high-handed behaviour of local governors; he enabled Jewish business people and craftsmen to lease properties from Muslim endowments on an equal footing with Muslim bidders; more generally, he respected their rituals and places of worship and guarded them against encroachment even when the perpetrators were other Muslim dignitaries.[5]’ And finally Amnon Cohen describes the effectiveness of Islamic law for Jewish interests: ‘No one interfered with their internal organisation or their external cultural and economic activities…In a world where civil and political equality, or positive social change affecting the group or even the individual were not the norms, the Sultan’s Jewish subjects had no reason to mourn their status or begrudge their conditions of life. The Jews of Ottoman Jerusalem enjoyed religious and administrative autonomy within an Islamic state, and as a constructive, dynamic element of the local economy and society they could - and actually did - contribute to its functioning.’[6] [1] Amnon Cohen, A World Within: Jewish Life as Reflected in Muslim Court Documents from the Sijill of Jerusalem (XVIth Century). Part One, 1994, Pennsylvania, p. 8. [2] Ibid, p. 17. [3] Ibid, p. 18. [4] Ibid, p. 20-21. [5] Ibid, p. 22. [6] Ibid, p. 22-23.

Don't go back to the "Golden Age of the medieval period to prove how wonderful life was infor the Jews under Islam. Jews and Christians were "dhimmis", protected by the Muslim rulers (very occasionally) because their holy books, the Torah andf the Gospels, were believed by the Muslims to contain partial truth, although not comparable to the full truth of the Quran. In the modern period, the 19th and 20th centuries, the position of Jews deteriorated, as the Muslim political and military powere in the world deteriorated. Each Arab Muslim country had its events of persecution, not to mention the usual condescension and humiliation handed out to non-Muslims. Every current Arab state, except Lebanon, states in its constitution that the religion of the state is Islam. Nobody seems to care that all Arab and Muslim states declare themselves Muslim states. The one Jewish state, which does not have an established religion (Judaism is not an established religion in Israel. The Ministry of Religious Affairs provides services to Jews, Christians, Muslims and Druze alike. although obviously the greatest share of its budget is for religious services for Jews) Israel is a parliamentary democracy, with the rule of law, the right of all citizens to vote and to be elected, an independent Supreme Court (so far), a free press and media and an open society. The Arab states, each and every one of them, is a dictatotship. Speak to any Arab or Palestinian in a quiet place and they will confirm all the above. You don't have to take my word for it. They will all acknowledge that the only place in the Middle East where Arab people have political rights is the State of Israel. Palestinians will tell you "sad, but true."

What an amazing interview of an amazing women so honest and identifiable and i dare say revolutionary makes me almost want to go out there and educate and implement immediately! For both adults and children! Suffer little children that are taught to have this blind obedience to adults who do not deserve it and adults who expect them to! And children who do not inherently subscribe to that blindness are often victimised! Cos children know they know but it is largely suppressed so when an adult speaks they trust often to the putting them in great danger even they feel it! Hats off to u Proffessor from the bottom of my heart! Will follow ur advice indeed! Not everybody has their total well being at heart! Ot is notably the very young male and female that man these checkpoints often brutalising the Palestinians what will happen one day when they wake up how will they ever live with themselves! So the system is not only cruel to the Palestinians but to them to!

Fantastic. Thank you. Shows why representation is SO important in education and at home. I grew up in an all white area of the world but i had dolls of colour as a child. Its not just feeling we are represented, but also that we humanise minorities that may not be represented in that environment. So pleased to see lego has started to include figures with limb differences for example.

I dare say that it was the Zionists all along who hurt the Jews (going back to at least WWI). Israel wouldn’t exist except for the Holocaust. The Zionists needed Jewish death and suffering. They needed them kept from immigrating to other countries (by having those borders closed and forcing them to Palestine). Jewish banking supported Hitler’s rise. Hitler agreed to Jews transfer to Palestine. Zionists leaders refused to help get many Jews to safety because they needed the collective Jewish suffering (ends justifies the means). I think this is one reason why it’s illegal to question/research the Holocaust in many European countries.

“How come he cannot recognize his own cruelty now turned against him? How come he can't see his own savagery as a colonist in the savagery of these oppressed peasants who have absorbed it through every pore and for which they can find no cure? The answer is simple: this arrogant individual, whose power of authority and fear of losing it has gone to his head, has difficulty remembering he was once a man; he thinks he is a whip or a gun; he is convinced that the domestication of the "inferior races" is obtained by governing their reflexes. He disregards the human memory, the indelible reminders; and then, above all, there is this that perhaps he never know: we only become what we are by radically negating deep down what others have done to us.” Jean-Paul Sartre,

Current discussions about invasion, colonialism, and apartheid of Palestine and other countries around the world should also include the Americas! I am aware more than ever of the actions done to the Native peoples in the history of what is now called the United States of America, of which I am an older proud citizen and Army veteran, and yet now so much more aware of the horrific things done in our own "land without a people", with plenty of room for Europeans to fill it up, the idea we had as children. Now as I join my voice with others for the Palestinian people, I realize I must also help with the immense amount of work to do here back home. I really enjoyed listening to your interview. This discussion gives more insight to the situation. I am joining with a large church group, within the international community, to confront our leaders about their complicity with the policies of the state of Israel, and to inform more Americans of the truth.
