Hi, your advice sounds sooo much easier than the recommendations here in the UK. We are told to sterilise bottles every use, sterilised and dried/constructed bottles can be kept for 24 hours. We are told now that formula bottles have to be made up only immediately before feeding and kept a max 1 hour before being discarded. The bulk making up thing was apparently ok 12 years ago when I had my middle son but not ok now. Now I use a perfect prep machine which hits the formula with a shot of boiling then cold filtered water. It’s much quicker than waiting on a kettle to cool every time but I don’t think they’re without issue, ie, I put the formula in before the shot of hot water but I didn’t think this might compromise the minerals in there until now. We don’t have purified water/nursery water in the UK. I’m in Scotland and we have fantastic, fresh soft water (not hard water that causes limescale like England). Why are the recommendations so different here? My baby is 2 months old now would he be ok with your recommendations? Thanks

Thank you! I'm wondering, could we use distilled or bottled water if we are out on a trip and cannot boil water?

There are electric hot water boilers/carafes that can keep water at 160°F. Most of us East Asians use them to drink warm drinks. I also usually boil the water prior to pouring into that but that also means the water becomes too hot for a while.

Must the water be boiled? I've been making my baby's formula with nursery water or distilled water for infant formula but i don't boil. I just mix directly into the baby bottle and ready to feed my baby. She is too impatient for all the boiling lol. Hope that is not an issue.

Thanks for this video. I would love to hear your opinion on this: ideally I would like to stick with ready to feed formula with baby #3 due next month. Looking at Similac pro advanced... as far as I know, it isn't available in RTF form. Should I buy similac advanced in liquid (regular or non GMO) or purchase the powder forms of pro advanced and deal with the inconvenience factor? TIA

wow, in the UK the guidelines are much stricter! we’re told to sterilise everything after every use, make formula on demand with freshly boiled water that has been cooled for 20 mins, etc..

Is it safe to put it in the fridge when it's still 158°? Things often turn sour if you put them in the fridge while they're still hot/warm.

Yes, the hot water is what kills the bacteria. Once it is thoroughly mixed, it is safe to put it in the refrigerator.

How long do you need to boil water for powder formula (I never knew you couldn’t use powder right away)? Both the formulas I was looking at for this baby are only available in powdered form and while we are trying to avoid formula for first six months if we have to go to it earlier I’d like to make it properly (best way for baby to digest).

@BabyFormulaExpert5 жыл бұрын
These should be OK as long as your baby is healthy and older than 8 weeks. If younger than 8 weeks check with your doc. They’ll probably tell you it’s fine, but some are really conservative and prefer sterile (boiled) water before 7 weeks....

Hi! So I use the Dr.Brown mixer pitcher. I make 32 oz. I boil water and fill it up about 15 oz, then add room temperature filtered water and then mix the formula in. The I stick it in the refrigerator and I pour into bottles every time I need to give my baby a bottle, but by the time I give it to her it’s cold so I use the Dr.Brown bottle warmer.... is what I’m doing okay? Gosh I hope I get a response lol
@BabyFormulaExpert6 жыл бұрын
Hi! so to follow these guidelines, you should boil ALL 32 oz, wait for it to cool to 158 and then pour that into the pitcher with the powder. This is because filtered water is not sterile. Once it's all mixed, it's absolutely fine to put it in the fridge (for up to 24 hours), and warm up the bottles in a bottle warmer. DON'T panic if you haven't been doing this - obviously your baby is just fine :) Also, once she is over the 3 month mark (and otherwise healthy and wasn't premature), then you can switch to just using tap/filtered water to mix.... no more need to sterilize! You're doing a great job Mama!

Subsequent to this, how do you sterilize that pitcher? It looks too large to boil in a pot. Or do you not need to sterilize the pitcher?
@rsarahi146 жыл бұрын
Michelle Larin well I suppose you don’t have to sterilize the pitcher and it’s actually not that big lol but just as you don’t sterilize your bottles each time you use them, I guess it would be the same with the pitcher?

Does not have a probiotic. Ready to feed can contain a prebiotic. But you can add probiotic drops so that your baby still benefits from them.

What about microwave sterilizers? Do you think they really do a good enough job? Or should I still boil at least once per week?
@BabyFormulaExpert6 жыл бұрын
microwave sterilizers should work. My (very minor) concern is if there is "gunk" on the equipment, then bacteria can hide inside. Boiling submerges all parts of the bottles/pieces so should penetrate more (in theory). But honestly we're splitting hairs. If you put clean parts in the microwave sterilizers bags, then I am very happy with the job it does!

Would the 158 degrees F water cause the degradation of any heat sensitive nutrients in the formula like MFGM or lactoferrin in Enfamil Enspire ?
@aprilchoate786 жыл бұрын
Divya Arun yes it does don’t listen to anything this lady is telling you call the number on the back of the formula or ask the baby’s doctor. If you put the formula in 158 degrees it kills everything.
@andy147446 жыл бұрын
I called Enfamil company and they said to mix with room temperature water only. My baby's doctor did not have any answers when I asked her if the heat can cause degradation of nutrients. I think 158 degrees F can cause loss of some vitamins but not sure its bad for the other components. But what Dr Young is recommending is what the WHO and CDC also are recommending to sterilize the powder to get rid of any possible cronobacter in the powder. Feeling very confused as to why WHO/CDC recommend a temperature that the formula makers can't comply with :(

Would 158 degree water kill the probiotics in Gerber gentle?
@BabyFormulaExpert6 жыл бұрын
GREAT question!! Honestly, I don't know the tolerance level of that particular strain. We obviously know that they thrive at 98 degrees, and will have a tolerance level around that range. My guess would be that it reduces the number of viable cells but does not completely kill all of them. The 158 degrees kill cronobacter - which is a dangerous, but fragile bacteria. The probiotic strains are more robust.
