what do you think of the bow mechanics in rust? It has Bow, Compound Bow and Crossbow. It has been reworked multiple times already. The community and devs would gladly hear your opinion about this on the rust subreddit. Also any ideas to improve the gameplay or make it more realistic?(wouldn't mind a nerf) Edit: especially on different ranges

Another one: when drawing the bow, in nearly every game it makes a sound like you're bending some fragile wood. If your bow made those sounds in real life, you should stop using it

A selfbow longbow wouldn't creak that much. But far as I understand, composite bows made from natural materials, does make a pretty noticeable creak.

The Sound are made for more Professional Players ore just for „Feeling“. Let me give you en exemple: When bows are used in Games then there is no feeling for „when the bow reachs full draw“ so you need a sound to know when this is done. At Most games you need to hold the trigger to get to full draw and make max dmg. Its the same like Space games. In real there will be no sounds when fires weapons ore something explodes becouse of vacuum. And thet feels realy strange. If you wanna test how strange this feels, then try Mechworrior online on en space station map. The makers of this game dose „no sound“ in vacuum. Movies are Movies, Games are Games and realworld are.... yeah just real ;-)

Another thing to add, the "Eagle Eye" mechanic, most archery in games have this perk. Somehow archers can focus their vision to look far away like a binocular to snipe on the enemy. Not just that, the time slow down too.

That’s not really a “mistake.” It’s just a feature to give an actual mechanical buff for increasing your skill level other than numbers and to make it easier to do. Edit: I don’t mean to say it’s not inaccurate - just to say it’s not a mistake made in regard to archery, but an intentional unrealistic addition.

elder scrolls games actually all do a very good job at this, so much so that skyrim and oblivion preserve the momentum of the arrow after it has been shot, meaning that, if you shoot while strafing, the arrow won't go straight, if you shoot while backing away from your target, the arrow will drop more quickly, if you shoot while approaching an elevated target the arrow will hit low as it had less time to gain elevation. the projectile physics are more noticeable with slower moving ranged spells but they do apply to archery all the same. another thing skyrim gets perhaps a little bit too right is how many arrows it takes to kill a thing, you can turn most higher level enemies into hedgehogs and they won't drop unless your bow is enchanted or made of mystical materials that don't exist in the real world.

@NUSensei Personally, I am a long time bowhunter and when I see that a video game character carries in his back quiver 99+ arrows without making any noise (arrows that collide together), which do not go out of the quiver when the character jump like Spiderman, not to mention the weight of these 99+ arrows in his back, well it's a bit ridiculous ..

A lot of this goes for firearms in games as well. Not at all as easy as they make it. Funnily enough, when it comes to noise, they do the opposite. They completely overlook how LOUD firearms are, esp. when firing indoors. It would make your ears literally ring, and probably do permanent damage, without really good ear protection. (Something they completely overlook in movies and tv shows as well.)

This is what I like about Kingdom Come: Deliverance. While not perfect by any means, it deals with a few of these issues. Your character isn't at all proficient at using the bow at the start and can only handle very weak bows, needing to work up to more powerful ones. Its accuracy isn't great either, especially with the aiming method (unless you cheat and use the reticule!). It doesn't generally kill with one shot, especially against armoured targets. The power isn't quite as arbitrary - while it doesn't go into detail on exact draw weights, it does label some bows as stronger and of different construction leading to more power. It is *kinda* used as a stealth weapon but not to the extent of other games. I haven't played it for a few months so I can't remember quite what effect it has using a bow when there are multiple enemies around - whether they hear it or not. But it's still a fairly decent representation of archery (from my limited experience of archery!)

Just to comment - you had footage of 'the hunter' when talking about arrow lethality and it dropped that deer in 1 shot. The hunter has very realistic wepons and lethality modelling- most of the time deer and anything but the really small critters, will NOT go down in 1 shot unless you get like a heart shot - and with an appropriately powerful weapon for the animal. So you need a good angle and to know where to hit to get the heart, and then to actually hit there. If you are not a great shot, you often have to track down animals till they bleed out.
@thomasshaw38785 жыл бұрын
The footage of The Hunter was when he was making the disclaimer that if you have the right type of arrowhead for the situation, (such as a broad-head) then you can get a very quick kill.
@joejoelesh11975 жыл бұрын
IRL even a good heart/lung shot will not drop a deer on the spot. Some amount of tracking is required with anything other than a spine hit (which is really a miss in my book). That being said, if you dont spook the deer after the shot, they will normally fall within 75 meters on a good hit, and often far less.
@johnmurphy55283 жыл бұрын
I always thought that the arrow never penetrated enough in video games. If you go deer hunting with any decent bow setup over 45-50 pounds, the arrow will almost always pass all the way through the deer and keep going. I did it with a 45 pound samick sage at 25 yards and with a perfect heart shot. Also I think bows in video games aren't lethal enough, I don't think they are too lethal at all. Obviously in order to drop someone on the spot with a bow you need either a head shot or a spine shot, but most heart and double lung shots render your target unconscious and on the floor within 4-8 seconds, and dead within a minute.
@sarinhighwind5 жыл бұрын
Instant experting in the bow can be also with firearms in games as well. You cannot pickup a pistol or a rifle and just start head shotting people from 40 yards, mostly not even 15 yards. While a bit of skill characteristic would be great in games, it's also nice as well to just not have to suffer to death from RNG due to low skill rating. Some games have attributed it to lower damage when un skilled (hate this) Others add RNG aspects to it, (hate RNG for a lot of things) Other games add maintenance and some other odd things to the gun such as jamming more or whatever else, and this is more easily deal-able in a game, but real life we all know is far different. Even as an expert in real life we can have off days, and games cannot reflect that as well.
@sarinhighwind5 жыл бұрын
@οὐτόπος I strongly disagree with you, all these factors are issue with fire-arms also. Is it easier to learn to shoot a firearm vs great bow technique? sure. There are less mechanics involved. But you're not gonna be shooting 1moa after a few hours with a gun. Nor are you with a bow.
@Raving4 жыл бұрын
One realistically portrayed use of a rifle by a novice is in The Last of Us. A young girl has to provide cover for the protagonist with a rifle. She had never fired a rifle before but knew about aiming from hunting rats with a pellet gun. In the battle she missed most of her shots but still made the enemy keep their heads down. Allowing the protagonist to maneuver to where he had to go.

An arrow doesn't normally inflict a fatal wound, typically not in the sense that games show where you drop dead after being hit. A bullet does far more soft tissue damage compared to the puncture wounds caused by most arrows. Broadheads will cut up blood vessels if you get a good hit in the vitals, but otherwise the arrows used in most games are armour-piercing in design and are meant to debilitate more than cause grievous wounds.

Aren't wounds on the Extremeties are generally less lethal regardless of weapon employed? Also, during the 100 years war era, English long bow, bodkin or broadhead arrows would pull clothing fabric and or chainmail into a wound channel thus causing it to fester and killed via infection if target survived initial injury. In the long term arrows were fairly lethal.
@JC_WT5 жыл бұрын
It's an understandable misconception that damage to the extremities is less lethal than centre of mass, but that's not actually true. That's the reason most police forces around the world train for centre of mass shots, and don't shoot for the legs or arms. The problem with the extremities is that they hold a very high concentration of main veins and arteries in a very small area, so taking a shot to the thigh for example, if you were to get hit in the femoral artery, which is highly likely, you could bleed out in as little as 30 seconds without proper medical treatment. You'll be lucky to survive. The problem gets even worse when you take a bullet to the same area, and it hits bone. The bone shatters, sending fragments of your own bone shredding through the surrounding tissues like shrapnel, again, almost guaranteeing that you will bleed out very fast. With Centre of mass shots, there is far higher chance that the projectile can pass through the torso without hitting anything vital, and as such, a higher chance to be saved, as well as a generally wider window to be treated. Of course, centre of mass could also be a fast kill depending if it hits vital organs. But again, overall, your chances of survival are ultimately greater than if hit in the extremities.
@dedrickhowell8055 жыл бұрын
@@JC_WT I actually agree with you; statistically survivability is higher if wounded in an extremity vs centre of mass, my post just wasn't clearly written. I do think there is alot of inaccuracy and false information disseminated via you tube that frequently goes unchallenged. This video for example is wrong in asserting that arrow wounds were typically historically survivable, for the reasons I mentioned, foremost infection.

i would actually disagree with the lethality part, of course, this depends on the arrow but more often than not, for a "hunting bow", the arrow doesn't get stuck inside the body like they always show in video games and movies, most of the time, the arrow goes through all the way unless it hit down and even then, it would need to hit a very strong bone to actually stop it and a human/zombie doesn't have that strong of a bone for the most part... dow would you just die by an arrow hit right away if you were hit in the torso, no but you will probably bleed to death if the area wasn't treated, and that is if the archer wasn't aiming for the head or the heart. it's the same with guns, if you hit somebody in the torso, unless it's in a critical place then they will probably live on if they get treated fast enough
@NUSensei4 жыл бұрын
If you get hit with a broadhead to the gut, you're probably going to bleed out. Practically however, the torso is one of the better protection hit locations - if not through skeleton structure, then with clothing and equipment. Even a mobile phone can stop an arrow: time.com/5551201/australia-cell-phone-arrow-attack/ So yes, if you shoot through an unprotected fleshy part, a pass-through is not unusual.

Now if you're just talking instant death...you might have a point...unless that arrow is going right into or through the brain stem the thing your aiming at isn't going to drop instantly...deer have been known to take an arrow through their side, straight through both lungs and their heart but still manage to run quite a distance before dropping...on the other hand animals have also been known to be hit the exact same way and barely flinch, just freezing on the spot as if they barely felt it and then succumbing to the shock and or trauma almost immediately...it's rare but it does happen. Most games just lazily go with the instant death animation because it's easier, immediately satisfying and most of all consistent...most games don't even have separate limb and vital organ hit detection or even account for things like armour...off the top of my head I can't think of a single game that accounts for things like draw weight, wind direction or projectile shape or mass etc...usually if there's any variation in a game between weapons and projectiles etc (i.e types) it's done very lazily with arbitrary number stats. Now personally I would've thought what with all the technology, graphical power and physics engines available to game developers along with the wealth of free information available to them about a certain subject like archery or modern firearms for example...well you'd think they'd put more effort and work into their games key features and gameplay mechanics...but no they'd rather just have more pixels and polygons.

You can try but you can't fit 1000 hours into a week, even as an Olympic archer. lol :)

But maybe 1000 arrows, which is what he said, I think. ;)

Using a bow in The Last Of Us has saved my ass many times. It's surprisingly effective.

Emberre löni az nem jó. Hegy nélkül is borzasztó sebet és fájdalmat okoz. Én megbántam gyermekkori eszentlenséget. Rugóacél illyam volt a lehető legbrutálisabb. Csak céltábla!

3:17 if this clip is from your recent shooting session, you might want to stop practicing olympic and traditional style together. Actual professionals will cringe watching you shoot like that, especially the ones that practice olympic style.
