For me add a big contractor garbage bag. Also “whistle while you get raped.” Classic 3d Dana Flick fire is good, i think your fire kit is much to large, 1x bic lighter, 1x pack of all weather matches as a backup, and a few fire tabs/ vaseline balls. as survival kit you should be lighting your fire once... BUTBUT BUT... my stove! I found a pocket rocket with a peso igniter... so no flame required to light.. MY kit fits in the pot set. Its one of those stainless pots with the fold out handle that locks the lid in place for storage. Stove, fuel, some comfort food, whistle, mirror, survival bivy sack (better then a blanket) some light cordiage, fishing kit, SEWING KIT, things like knifes, compass, water, real food, multitool are all part of the systems I use... this kit drops into my hunting rig (fanny pack + type setup) when im heading out for the day from base camp. I usually leave it in my vehicle (along with some survival ration bars good for 3 days (2400cal per day) 3d Ol Retired Fed Moto is ok as long as you avoid cars, bad mechanics, rocks, and deer. I’m a backpacker and a gun nut and some what prepper. Ex infantry. Backpacking is a lot of fun… sometimes but it is excellent training to do without. In the back country everything take 2x as long. One point for the kids: Always, always, always backpack with a sleeping bag. A poncho liner will not cut it. Also a mat to get off the ground.

I didn't know my dad growing up only met him a few times haven't seen him in twenty years he just passed during the pandemic from a heart attack he was in his 70s anyway my point being theres probably a lot of other guys out there just like me who didn't have an old man growing up to show them the ropes now I'm 37 and everything I know I've pretty much learned through experience but I'm sure there's a lot of other guys that listen to your videos to learn just like me so keep up the great work and just know you inspire enlighten teach and encourage so many of us thank you for all you do keep up the great work

With my back the way it is, I don't do much heavy backpack hiking, but I do alot of daily walking to things moving, and for the last 6 years, my trusty Victorinox Swisschamp has done everything I need of it. I carry it on my belt with an Olight, a small first aid kit and a water bottle, just fine for park and nature preserve walks!

I am pretty well experienced when it comes to staying alive in the back country, I've been running around the woods my whole damn life. I have the knowledge and the kit to stay alive, but I am always trying to find ways to get my kit lighter and, if reasonable, simpler. I would never advise anyone to just jump into a crazy expedition having zero experience. But there isnt anything wrong with trying new things either.

@@albertwells8393 Agreed. Even then, there are ways to get lighter options of all the 10 Cs. For example, your choice of container. I use Platypus (brand) skins and gatoraid bottles. because they are lighter than camelbaks and nalgenes. For water purification, I choose a light weight filter or chlorine dioxide, depending on what capabilities I need.

I keep a blaze orange bandana in my Signal/Navigation Kit. Map, Suunto MC2 Compass, Pace Beads, Whistle, Headlamp with spare batteries, Rite in the Rain Notepad, Baofeng UV5R radio, pen and pencil. The compass has a mirror on it. I have that Orion Flare Gun and it's pretty sweet, but I don't have it in any of my kits. I also have a folding solar panel for charging my electronics in my long term bug out bag. Although it's pretty heavy, I keep a Food Procurement Kit in my long term bug out bag as well. It's a FILBE Sustainment Pouch and I keep a Conibear 220, two 110's, Gill Net, Fishing Tackle, Fishing YoYo's, Slingshot and ammo, and some bait for the traps. The conibear traps are heavy, but I'm almost guaranteed to catch something to eat. It is for my long term bug out bag tho, I'd just put food in a shorter term bag to last me a few days.

I have lived in the Phoenix valley for most of my life, and the Superstition Mountains are my second home. I always have a PSK with me whenever I'm out there. Don't know how much I weighs and don't care. It comes with me regardless. Water is the most important item I bring. You can't always count on the springs.

I have a three day hike/camp pack that weighs about 20lbs, but that is in moderate weather (summer/fall in Texas, maybe add 3lbs or so for colder weather). It includes the pack, tent, dehydrated food and 1.5l of water (with a way to filter/collect water). also, no large knife/axe or gun/ammo. Just hiking setup really.

All you need in Texas is a good 4 inch blade and maybe a folding saw. Carrying a SWAK or MT is also a good idea.

I have many things integrated into my camp, hiking, BOK's, based on area terrain, weather conditions as such, 2 is 1, 1 is none is an old sailor's quote, adding a Fresno lense or even a small magnifying glass, I have these two stage tear drop designed ones way next to nothing and work great, actual testing done and I also carry a small pair of binoculars, just in the event I need to glass the areas around me in search of someone or something in my area, in the event I need to focus on signaling in the event of a rescue, but overall, it was a well thought out video, as always Lt Col NutnFancy.

I’ll never be having to survive for days in the wilderness even though I live in the mountains ofVirginia. But overnight during all 4 seasons due to being somewhat off course or its getting dark or in checking out a new area to hike or camp, definitely a possibility. In such circumstances shelter, water, fire, and insulation layer super important. Like your vids

My buddy and I were out hunting as the sun was going down. We were pretty deep when we saw an ultra light hiker walk by. We both kinda looked at each other a shrugged. The sun went down and we hiked back to the truck. We packed up and headed back to camp and saw the hiker using his phone as a flash light. Asked him what was up and he was off the trail he had intended to take and out later than he wanted to be. Offered to give him a ride to the road but he declined and we didn’t have much space in the truck. We started off again and looked at our maps and it didn’t feel right that the dude would have to hike back by iphone light at least 2 miles to the road. My buddy jumped in the back we turned around and talked some sense into the dude. Gave him a ride back to the main road where his parents were waiting for him. Good win that day.

UCO Match kit - I customized remove all the matches and striker strips. Put a Mini Bic Lighter inside, plus (12) large headed WP Matches, the two striker strips sealed in plastic and (3) Birthday Candles. The latter are the windproof ones. BIC and Matches two Ignition sources, and candle wax gets wet wood lit and stays lit.

A few friends and I were hiking the narrows in Zion national park. We came in from the north where there are very few people. A few hours in, we came across another group with an injured member who wasn't able to walk. My group was able to provide a satellite phone and portable HAM radio. It wasn't deep in the canyon, so we were able to climb out and contact park services for an extraction. They might've run into a park ranger, but as far as I know, only three groups passed through that day including us and them. The entry point was a private ranch where only the occasional drop-off shuttle traveled to.

For fishing in a survival type situation I'd rather have a gill net or even a cast net. Although I guess there's something to be said for keeping yourself occupied while you dig for bait, make a pole, tie everything together, try one spot, try another, keep casting... I would upgrade quite a few items. For one, the Grayl Geopress not only can be used as a water container, it is an awesome filter. I would certainly replace the saw with a more functional one such as a folding saw. And, the Suunto MC2 is a much more usable compass with not much more weight. Look at the One-Handed Trekker knife from Victorinox as it has a saw, awl, can-opener, and if you get hurt, a one-handed tool might make sense. The Picogrill 85 is an awesome survival stove, especially coupled with a Trangia, but as Nutn said, a nice canister stove kicks but. I would prefer one with the canister seperated from the burner so you can use a wind screen. Can't discount a good wool cap.

Nutnfancy, you might want to consider the various products from Walker Paws for your dogs to wear on their feet during cold/snowy weather. I had a seamstress friend sew fleece booties into a set of Walker Paws leggings for my Dachshund to wear during cold-weather camping in Michigan.

My knee is such I cant hike at all. But every day I carry three things. Gun , often my shield in 45, knife often spyderco resiliance, light often my olight single cr123a ...think its the 400 model although I also have a couple of the new version. I feel as prepared as I need with those three . Back when I worked out of a large van i kept entra lights and batteries and a extra phone battery charger although my van had twin 6500 watt generators.always a gallon of water and a huge bag of pretzels. Not amazing but you could always eat and drink something. Bandaids and ankle wrap ace bandage and benedryl and pain meds. Gave out benedryl after a bunch of bee or wasp stings and a rescue inhaler saved my boss once when she had a critical allergy incident.

35 to 40 pounds without water? That’s nuts. My full comfort kit with food and water for 5 days weighs under 30 pounds, and that’s with 4 pounds of water. The typical AT through hiker carries under 35 with food and water.

I base my kit off of Dave Canterbury's 5 and 10 C's of survival. It's a very simple system and it can often times save you on weight.

I've got an new KTM 690 enduro and keep a kit on it in North Central Idaho and do tons of backcountry trips. You should bring that KTM out and do the Idaho backcountry trail from the Utah border to Canadian border.
