My EPI fecal lactase score is 148. I have lost close to 40 pounds over a 2 year period. Bloating, gas oily stools have calmed down. I tried the pert using CREON and ZENPEP. TERRIBLE side effects headaches from hell, gut pain plus increased my tinnitus so f….. bad, ringing in my left ear. I stopped taking the pig enzymes PERT. I pray to God I have an appointment in January 2023 at Johns Hopkins hospital with a highly renown Pancreas doctor. I do not drink or smoke. I take fat soluble vitamins with my small low fat meals every day. I can not take PERT !

Can e.p.i cause dry skin like eczema i have floating oily stools and do local gp test for epi pluss ive realised enzymes over the counter are not strong enough which ones would u recommend?
@MissionCure7 ай бұрын
Hi there! Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency (EPI) can cause vitamin and mineral deficiencies, which may affect your skin and hair, sometimes resulting in conditions like dry skin or eczema. Floating, oily stools are a common symptom of EPI. For testing, it’s best to consult with a specialist rather than relying solely on a general practitioner (GP). They can perform specific tests for EPI, such as a fecal elastase test. Over-the-counter enzymes are often not strong enough. We recommend looking into FDA-approved PERT brands, which you can find on our website: EPI Webpage: mission-cure.org/complications-of-chronic-pancreatitis/exocrine-pancreatic-insufficiency/ PERT Webpage: mission-cure.org/managing-pancreatitis/pancreatic-enzyme-replacement-therapy/ For more detailed information, check out our EPI playlist and our vitamin and mineral deficiency videos: EPI Playlist: kzbin.info/aero/PLJXha4Nvx8NJRu03C4kOj3CyoqjvB_Q6u&feature=shared Nutrition & Vitamin and Mineral Deficiency Videos: kzbin.info/aero/PLJXha4Nvx8NIxUzyrWc8ec0plt44vpMo4&feature=shared

22:32 has it occured to anyone that possibly because people are following low fat diets that its creating this problem? I thought we were supposed to eat fatty fish and butter on a regular basis? Olive oil and lamb? Isn't that what the Mediterranean diet is? If our gallbladder isn't being used often enough, it seems like it gets clogged, lazy and malfunctions.
@MissionCure10 ай бұрын
Thanks for your input. Pancreatitis has various causes, including gallstones. As our expert highlights, there's no one-size-fits-all diet recommendation for all pancreatitis patients. Clinical research evidence suggests a positive relationship between fat content and exacerbation of symptoms in some patients. We always recommend patients work with their doctors and dietitians to find protocols that suit their specific needs, which are multifactorial. You can explore our nutrition webpage for more information on the topic:mission-cure.org/managing-pancreatitis/nutrition-for-chronic-pancreatitis/

what exactly is enzyme treatment?
@MissionCure2 ай бұрын
Enzyme treatment, or PERT (pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy), helps your body digest food when your pancreas isn’t producing enough enzymes. You can learn more about enzymes in our EPI playlist: kzbin.info/aero/PLJXha4Nvx8NJRu03C4kOj3CyoqjvB_Q6u&feature=shared Or on our PERT page: mission-cure.org/managing-pancreatitis/pancreatic-enzyme-replacement-therapy/ Hope this helps! 💙

Any data on ketogenic diet and how it can help this condition?
@MissionCure Жыл бұрын
As the keto diet is high in fat, it may not be the best while managing chronic pancreatitis. Additionally, some case reports have documented episodes of acute pancreatitis in those following the keto diet. We'd suggest talking to your doctor first to see what's best for your specific situation.

How do I know how much enzyme to take? I aim for about 10 grams of fat per meal, and for that, I take 2-36,000 u Creon capsules. I can eat more fat once in a while, and use 36,000 u per 5 fat grams. Yay, pizza and nachos! But be careful. Restaurants disguise the fat where you least expect it. Though it took some effort to find out, Chicken Salad Chick’s lowest fat chicken salad contains 36 grams of fat! Impossible.
