I have roselle hibiscus plants growing in my yard, for the past several years. It’s so easy to grow! Everyone should grow some. And don’t sleep on the leaves of the plant, too! Fresh new leaves have a kale feel and a lemony-spinachy flavor. Older leaves can be used like collard greens. And the juicy red calyxes (what tea is made from) can be eaten fresh on salads or in smoothies. Tastes like cranberry!

Very interesting. Is this found locally or does it have to be ordered? Also what type of climate does it grow best in? My summers are dry and pretty warm.. thank you.

@@j.c.7555it thrives in Jamaica and it grows well in hot and humid south Florida summers, but you can definitely grow it as an annual though to get the flower pods, you may need to start seeds inside before the last frost.

@@j.c.7555 Hibiscus plants can grow in growing zones 5-9, tropical hibiscus in zones 10 - 12. For someone who lives in Minnesota/ North Dakota/ South Dakota/ cold winter states (zones 3-5) a hibiscus could grow outside in the summer in a sunny area, but brought inside and put in a sunny window in the wintertime. Good luck !

I love hibiscus tea. 1-cup flowers (32grams) steeped in 1-gallon water and drink 24-30 ounces per day. Wonderful cold or hot. Drank every day for 5 years. Still have a bit of high blood pressure. Now just drink it a couple times a week and no changes. Would be great if helps my health (I don’t think so) I just really like Jamaica. I’m 5’11”, 170 lbs 64 years old.

In Nigeria, we call it ZOBO! We boil it in the water with ginger and natural fruit juices like pineapple. Then we refrigerate. It's very refreshing when cold.

When in the tea isle if you can’t find hibiscus tea look for other red tea and you may find hibiscus as the first ingredient.

I was a vegetarian for many years and weight never went down until I went on the Keto diet. That lowered my BP from 140/90 to 110/60. I tired Hibiscus TEA did not lower my BP BY much. 2 cups a day, Hisbiscus has Potassium in it which helps to lower BP.

I use two bags of Tazo passion hibiscus tea with a packet of stevia lemonade in sparkling water I make with one of those soda makers. I grind up some black cumin and rinse it down with almond milk. Then I chew down 5 whole walnuts, a half teaspoon of matcha on my chia pudding topped with organic peanut butter from BJs. Getting my bloodwork done tomorrow. My total cholesterol was below 200 but I had fatty liver at stage 2. despite a very active lifestyle and no redmeat for my entire adult life and no alcohol my BMI has akways been high with a Rugby player build. That excess weight had lead to insulin resistance which lead to elevated liver enzymes for possibly decades. Since my liver scan my liver enxyme elevation have fallen by half along with 20 pound weight loss just maintaining my blood sugar below 100. However prior to covid I was loosing twice this much weight with the same glucose monitoring.

Speaking of limiting hibiscus tea consumption, note that the #1 ingredient in the Starbucks Herbal Iced Tea (the Passion Tango) is actually Hibiscus. Given the size of their drinks and the free refills of Rewards members, one could easily consume more than the recommended dose without realizing it.

To make a tastier version of this, along with my loose leaf hibiscus tea leaves I add 1/4 tsp of powdered ginger, as well as a little bit of honey or agave syrup to the hot water. The same two additions go well with green tea.

Honey and agave syrup aren't recommended by Dr Greger as both are just sugar to the body. He recommends homemade date syrup. 1 cup pitted dates blended with 2 cups water. Store in the fridge. It's whole food with much more nutrition than sugar type sweeteners. Let the bees keep their winter food ❤

Some teas have "natural flavors" added. They started out natural but have been chemically treated until they're anything but natural however they can still be labeled as natural since they started from a natural source. Avoid "natural flavors" like those in zinger tea.
