Two things: 1. They allow half of the grains as refined grains because in the USA refined grains are often enriched with B vitamins (thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, folic acid) and iron. 2. The reason behind recommending high milk consumption: recommended calcium allowances based on North American and Western European data is unusually high compared to the rest of the world. It is very hard to cover that much calcium without including milk. RDA of Calcium for 10 yrs or older is between 1000-1300 mg per day for the people of that region. But in the rest of the world people often take much less calcium without any detrimental effect. One can argue that the RDA of calcium in North America and Western Europe is not correct and will be revised in the future, but as long as it is the accepted RDA the guideline needs to cover it.

Milk is incredible, tell me just one thing wrong with it
@Deusaga4 жыл бұрын
@@mikeyvesperlick6982 1 thing wrong with it is 70% of adults lack the digestive enzyme to digest the lactose inside it. What does this do? It messes with your metabolism during the process. The body diverts energy to the struggle against digesting lactose. Bloating, gas and inflammation are but among other symptoms from dairy ingestion. Not all of the nutrients in milk are properly digested because of that digestive struggle, as a result many of those nutrients you mention aren't adequately utilised. You can get all of said nutrients in thousands of alternative options that don't temporarily stunt your metabolism by digestive aggravation.

It's a challenge at the majority of supermarkets to find a product with unprocessed whole grains - germ, bran and endosperm that have not been crushed, milled, ground, let alone even those 3 parts of the seed still included at all. I think the USDA is misguided in thinking the vast majority of Americans can find true whole grain products. The bulk aisle of a Whole Foods might be a partial exception, where I think you can find oat groats or steel cut oats and possibly a couple of other true whole grains. But in the product aisles, forget about it. Telling Americans to eat whole grains will lead them to buy breads, cereals, pastas and other refined, processed foods that say "whole grain" on them because there are not regulations on what "whole grain" actually means. It's the same as "All Natural" or "Grass Fed' - those things really have no meaning on a food label.

Happy New Year doc! Really good point you mention that it is USDA making the guidelines. I 100% agree that until a new organization is given the responsibility of creating the guidelines, it is going to be tough make what some would consider "dramatic" changes to the guidelines because of the conflicts in interest.... That I think is the larger point, and should be getting the bulk of the attention. Bringing guests on sounds like a lot of fun! Can't wait to see who you have in mind! He said "we should tell the people the truth." Absolutely, I agree. The guidelines apply best to young healthy people, and the problem is that most of the population is not healthy and has poor metabolic health, diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, etc., and should not be eating per these guidelines. Another problem is that the guidelines are based on poor quality research such as epidemiological studies and should pay more attention to higher quality newer data. There's better methods to evaluate research that they ignored, instead sticking to old data that researchers are now showing to not be true. But people being people, they cannot bring themselves to admit errors and then change. Personally I'll look elsewhere for my information and I suggest others do the same.

A lot of healthy populations do eat these two foods in moderation and seem to be doing just fine...! Even though they technically contain sat fats and cholesterol..! Is fish better than other meats? Ok to eat or recommended? What types? Is yogurt better than other dairy? Low/ no fat better than full fat? you get the point :-)
@mikeyvesperlick69824 жыл бұрын
Fish actually has just a little cholesterol, if you don't go above 300mg it should never touch you negatively. Best fish to eat is whole anchovies or salmon because nothing else but salmon has astaxanthin, btw shrimp has zero cholesterol because it actually carries phytocholesterol aka plant cholesterol which we use to flush out excess. Yogurt is pretty good, definetly better than cheese because lactose actually has an important role in calcium and some other mineral absorbtion. I personally drink 0,3% milk but thats just because its easier to then dose how many nuts I get to have with my oats. Milk fat seems to hold some things we don't know much about, which do seem to be benificial so it's your choice
@NutritionMadeSimple4 жыл бұрын
good questions. yes fish is consistently linked to better outcomes than red meat. possibly bc of the unsaturated fats (omega 3s). we should always remember food is a package, not just 1 or 2 isolated nutrients :) concern is marine contaminants (mercury etc), but seems safe if eaten 1-2x/wk I have to make a video on dairy soon, there's so much controversy! :)

If that snack has added calcium you wanna throw it away into the trash because your body will just keep on pooling it into you blood stream until you have the necessary amount of k2 to metabolize it. I first want to say I enjoy your channel. However, to make such a broad statement that dairy cows are all mistreated is false. Most of the time where you see mishandling are the corporate dairy farms. There are amazing dairy farmers that have been doing it generation after generation. They take care of their cows, and that cow(s) financially supports their family. I would say people need to actually educate themselves on farmers and not just the corporate side of things. If the "little guy" is getting our support then they can thrive and do a much better job than corporation farms.
